Geo: 47.6353, -122.302The next morning, we departed at 7:20 for Anchorage aboard another coach. Again, I give Princess great credit for their efficiency in moving people and bags so well. After a short driving tour of Anchorage at the end, we were at the airport by 11:00am , and on our flight to Seattle shortly thereafter. The flight was, understandably, completely full, and 90-percent of us had to be from Princess and Holland America tours. It is a long flight, and we lost an hour on the clock, so by the time we checked into the hotel provided by Princess, it was almost 7:00pm – just enough time to grab dinner and go to bed. ... read more

Geo: 62.3878, -150.255Our luck changed, however, as we awoke the next two days to bright sunny skies. As walked from our building to the lodge, we realized the unparalleled views of McKinley ahead of us. I said we were in the middle of nowhere, which is no exaggeration. There is a small town of roughly 500 people about an hour south called Talkeetna, on which the TV show "Northern Exposure" was modeled. Princess runs a shuttle down here, so we rode down in the morning. It was a really neat little town, though I cannot imagine living there year round. Interestingly enough, the most unique and some of the best shops we'd see in all of Alaska were in Talkeetna. We were back at the lodge for lunch and then an afternoon trail ride. We had ... read more

Geo: 62.459, -150.244The following morning we took the so-called Husky Homestead tour, which involved a visit to the kennel of Iditarod dog race champion Jeff King. It seems that every single person who has ever won the Iditarod runs tours of their respective kennels, at which you get to hold the puppies and watch the dogs train. That said, we had been directed to not miss this tour to Jeff King's place. You'll see from the pictures that the puppies really are that cute. That said, aside from the dog demonstrations, we particularly enjoyed Jeff's speech, during which he recounted some of his experiences – he's run the race every year for more than 20 years, and is going again in 2010 – and what it was like to raise his family up there. Geo: 63.2237, -151.002The following morning, we had a Tundra Wilderness Tour which departed at 6:30am. At Denali Park, no private vehicles are allowed into the park. Even though Denali Park is almost unfathomably large – covering more than 9,500 square miles – it isn't even the largest park in Alaska. It also has a very colorful history, and used to be known as Mt. McKinley National Park. For those who don't know the story – I didn't – the name Mt. McKinley was officially attributed to what had been Denali Mountain (highest in North America) in 1897 by a local prospector. This guy had been prospecting with a couple of other men and as often happens, they spent way too much time arguing politics. Evidently the big topic of the day was whether the U.S. would ... read more

Geo: 63.2237, -151.002The train was really nice, with upstairs seating around table and large panaromic glass windows all around and above. Each car also had an outside viewing area downstairs, as well as more open seating. There was also a dining car and – of course – gift shop. The train was to take us all the way up to Denali National Park, almost 500 miles north. The trip took an admittedly tiring 10 hours. Much was compensated for, however, by the stupendous scenery. As we left Whittier and headed toward Anchorage, we went through endless dead forests created after the 1964 Good Friday earthquake. We heard much about the earthquake over the coming week, as it left an indelible mark on huge swaths of Alaska. The earthquake registered 9.2 on the Richter Scale, making it ... read more

Geo: 60.775, -148.683I was amazed at the efficiency with which Princess handled the disembarkation. We arrived at the port of Whittier around midnight, and by 0630 people were heading out. They had people scattering to all kinds of destination, with some leaving by bus, train, and catamaran. With almost 2,000 to handle, it was never crowded or chaotic and seemed to more effortlessly. I wasn't aware Princess was a German company. ;-) We had our seating assignment on the train, and by 0800 we were on board and on our way. Whittier is a funny little town, which wouldn't exist if it weren't for World War II. The Army needed a place to bring in supplies, and the existing port at Seward requires a long sail around the peninsula. They constructed the longest rail tunnel in ... read more

Geo: 60.9611, -148.087After leaving Glacier Bay, we had a lot of sea to cover, as we were cutting across the Gulf of Alaska to reach our final point. On Sunday early afternoon, we entered Prince William Sound – of Exxon Valdez "fame" – and again found ourselves passing through incredibly beautiful fjords. I was surprised by the sudden appearance of dozens of fishing boats – private and commercial – all around us. To me, I felt very conspicuous as our huge ship plyed by them, but most of the fishermen never even looked up. Our destination was College Fjord, which is home to more than 20 glaciers of different types and size. As with Glacier Bay, as we entered Prince William Sound we suddenly saw all kinds of sealife -- whales, seals, and lots of sea ... read more

Geo: 58.8217, -136.815Our last two days on the ship were spent at sea…kind of. We spent Saturday cruising through Glacier Bay National Park, and on Sunday afternoon passed through College Fjord for "scenic cruising." What this really meant is that at both places we traveled slowly and lingered at many glaciers. Glacier Bay was declared a protected area back in the 20's, but didn't become until a full-blown National Park until 1980. See my comments above. The place is IMMENSE, covering more than 5,000 square miles. Ironically there is a NPS Visitor Center, but it is near a very remote town, only reachable by boat or plane, so anyone wanting to go there really has to WANT to go there. The majority of people visiting the park do so on cruise ships, but for even that, ... read more
