Wednesday 3 June 2015 Amazing how things look after a good sleep. We got quite a surprise at the time - 8:10 am. Today was a quiet day. No long drives, no significant sightseeing, just a quiet day. We seem to be having problems with our toilets on this trip. We broke the flush button in Bayeux, we hit our head on the wall trying to get into the toilet in Auray, we flooded the toilet area with the shower in Nantes, the toilet roll holder fell in the toilet in Granville. Today this toilet wouldn't stop flushing. We hope this trip won't be remembered for the toilets we have met. Luckily a young man, who does, sorted everything out, at least we hope he did. We demonstrated the problem for him and it worked perfectly. ... read more

Tuesday 2 June 2015 In 2011 while making a whistle stop tour of the Loire Valley we made an instant decision: we shall return. Today we returned. While leaving Nantes we came to the conclusion that the city fathers of Auckland should pay this city a visit. Once they have been here they will see what happens when the growth of the city out strips the roading system. Roundabouts! Poor Polly didn't know what to say next. One roundabout joined another and sometimes another. Once out of the city we headed for Angers. We have mixed feelings about Angers. Four years ago we stayed in a gloomy hotel for one night. This left a dark impression of Angers on us, perhaps unfairly so. Today we wanted to right some wrongs. Polly took us right into the ... read more

Monday 1 June 2015 A wonderful welcome to the first day of Summer - the sun is shining. Auray was only a one night stand and was close enough to the coastal town of Carnac. Before heading off on our expedition we popped into Mr Leclerc for lunch provisions. Pastries, bread rolls, cheeses, tomatoes and bananas went into the bag. A very nice elderly French lady helped with the weighing. We think she was getting rather anxious that we were holding up progress. She was so nice about it. Then a lady, in a very Midlands English accent apologized in French for bumping into us. After a lengthy chat we all agreed it was nice to talk some English for a change, we wished each other bon voyage and went our separate ways. Our "bonjours" must ... read more

Sunday 31 May 2015 Our stay in Plounevez-Lochrist has been brief but rewarding. We explored the area and came away feeling as though the local population don't really miss the hustle and bustle of inner city life. As we said our farewells to our hostess she was quite apologetic about the weather. It was drizzling rain and reasonably cool. We assured her we had had a great time and the bed was so comfortable. She said she felt quite proud that someone from so far away had come to stay at her place. We chose the scenic route to Auray because it said so on the map. Polly didn't have much say in the matter. Perhaps she should have. As we headed inland over some high hills the weather closed in. Scenic!! We're not sure. We ... read more

Saturday 30 May 2015 We woke today to find sun and the promise of a fine day for exploring the north western portion of Brittany, the Finistere region. First, however, a hearty breakfast and a quick spot of washing to take advantage of a rare opportunity to dry a few garments outside on a quickly rigged up clothesline. Our farm accommodation here in Plounevez-Lochrist Is truly a home away from home. A quick consultation with the GPS lady resulted in a decision that we would do a self guided drive around the coastline, exploring whatever roads looked interesting and making as many stops beside the sea as we could, eventually ending up at what may be the most westerly point of Brittany. Of course this must be done with necessary stops for cafe au lait and ... read more

Friday 29 May 2015 We guess you are all logging in to Google Maps or Google Earth to find out where on Earth we are. Try the north west corner of Brittany. We have had a great time exploring the more popular parts of Brittany so today we head further west in the search of the real Brittany. A quick stop at Mr Leclerc for provisions and cheap diesel (€1.21 per litre and no road user charges) and we head NW on motorway N12. Motorway driving is not the most enjoyable way of seeing the country but it gets you quickly to the start of the sightseeing part. Binic looked like a great place to start the second part of today's drive. It was a cool day and the happy travellers did not want to picnic ... read more

Thursday 28 May 2015 Today was our last day in Rennes. We have driven past a very large homewares shop several times this week and as we had time to explore we paid them a visit. The store was enormous and what was on display was very inviting with modern styles and vibrant colours. Fortunately our baggage allowance prevented us from buying up large and they did not have free delivery. Perhaps when we purchase our little chateau in the Loire we might give them a call. Our good friend at the Tourist Office in Rennes recommended a visit to Vitre so our journey continued. Vitre has an Arts and Historical Town designation, similar to Dinan. Our first surprise was the free parking, the machine didn't work and it was lunch time. The second surprise was ... read more

Wednesday 27 May 2015 Each day as we turn on the GPS we have these thoughts about Polly, our live in guide. We are sure she says, "Good morning, what wonderful place am I taking you to today?" It might even be, "Oh no not you two again, thought I left you at Saint-Michel". Those who know us know we are not GPS savvy so all sorts of wonderful experiences happen. We ended up in the psychiatric hospital in Bayeux on one of our trips. Where to next? We just have to remember Polly is a machine and has no feelings. So today we start our day in St Malo. Shorts or jeans? The sun was shining and it felt good so shorts it was going to be. We seem to be having a great spell ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Mont Saint-Michel May 27th 2015

Tuesday 26 May 2015 Today dawned sunny and warm for our much anticipated visit to Mont Saint Michel, the historic abbey built high on a rock just off the coast where Normandy meets Brittany. With a history of the first Christian building here going back to early in the eighth century, this place has been built to fit the rock, giving it its distinctive silhouette when seen from a distance. Approaching the Mont by Road It looks almost surreal that such a sight could be possible in the wide and flat coastal landscape. Ample parking Is provided at a cost and free shuttle buses sweeten that pill by transporting visitors to a spot quite close to the destination. These buses can be driven from either end, saving the driver the trouble of turning. Alighting from the ... read more

Monday 25 May 2015 The driver was sent out early on an errand of great importance. Find some milk for breakfast. An easy task. Just pop along to Mr Leclerc collect a bottle or two and back in time to serve Madame with a delightful breakfast. Oh how wrong was he. Mr Leclerc was closed. The roads were quite empty. It didn't bode well for the search of milk. By chance a small City Carrefour was open. Madame had her breakfast. After breakfast we took the opportunity of driving into the centre of Rennes. The streets were deserted. Had we missed something. As we drove into an underground car park we had the choice of floor and space. We needed a map so off in search of the Tourist Office, not an easy search but well ... read more
