Saturday 13 June 2012 After a really good sleep we felt we were raring to get out and continue exploring Lyon for a second day. It is really handy having the tram stop just a very short distance from the hotel. The weather has brightened unexpectedly after last night's brief rain and it feels just right for today's excursion. Today we are taking tram T2 to the end of the line and beyond. Lyon has a fabulous integrated transport system that links trams, metro and buses and the fares are so cheap. Why take a car into the city. Our first destination is the confluence of the Rhone and Saone Rivers. These two mighty French rivers meet in Lyon with the Rhone continuing to the Mediterranean Sea. On a piece of land separating the two rivers ... read more

Europe June 12th 2015

Friday 12 June 2015 Four years ago we spent some time in Lyon but our experience was limited because of some travel bug on the lookout for a victim. Today is a chance to set things right. With heavy showers forecast we packed the wet weather gear and emerged from our hotel on the edge of the city to do what the locals do - catch a tram. Our tour leader had already investigated the necessary details: nearest tram stop, how to purchase an all day ticket and where to hop off and change to the underground train. No problems at all. Nearest stop less than one minute from the hotel, big friendly ticket machine there and then the fun of using the shiny trams and trains which come along at very short intervals. There must ... read more

Thursday 11 June 2015 Today we drive from Dijon to Lyon, taking back roads that will let us make stops at several villages or towns that intrigue us. We plan to visit at least three, GPS willing: Brancion, Taize and Cluny. With some regret we headed away from Dijon. Burgundy has captured our hearts and we will return one day to explore in a more leisurely way. The back roads that lead to Brancion wind up, down and around, through tiny villages, and past what we understand is an ancient standing stone with a stone cross added to the top. History upon history. Our arrival at the carpark just outside the medieval village of Brancion brought us right back to the present in the form of a class of school children enjoying a leisurely lunch in ... read more

Wednesday 10 June 2015 We had a great day in Beaune yesterday and everyone assured us we would have a great day in Dijon. So we did some homework with our e-book copies of Rick Steve and Lonely Planet. The list of sights was collated and we were ready for a sunny day of exploration in Dijon. We made the big decision to let Polly find us a carpark as close as possible to the middle of Dijon. After getting caught in the wrong lane for that quick right turn left turn we found a carpark that was almost empty. Why? A quick check with the non-English speaking attendant who assured us we could park anywhere, we locked the car underground and headed off. For two euros fifty for four hours parking we felt we had ... read more

Europe June 9th 2015

Tuesday 9 June 2015 Some days just feel good and Beaune did this for us. We had slept soundly and woke refreshed and ready for our day trip to Beaune, not far from Dijon. The drive in morning sunshine through vineyard country was spectacular. Vines were spread up and down the gentle southeast facing slopes as far as the eye could see. Occasional châteaux and related buildings broke the expanse of green, while in the rows of vines It seemed pruning and spraying were under way. Machines that do this work were crawling like some fantastic huge insects through the rows, and sometimes appeared on the road en route to their next appointment. Traffic chaos did not result, all remained calm and good humoured on this lovely morning. The same sense of calm accompanied us as ... read more

Monday 8 June 2015 What a blissful sleep. All our neighbours had departed the day before so we had our part of the camp to ourselves for the last night of our stay in the Loire. After four years of planning and really looking forward to this part of the trip we were not disappointed. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and have left just a little more to see during our next trip. The Camp Commandant came to inspect our chateau at exactly 9:00 am (the appointed time) and we passed with flying colours. The 250€ deposit was released and we left as happy travellers. Today was going to be a long drive to Dijon and Burgundy country. We drove through rolling countryside similar to South Canterbury with grain crops waving in the breeze as far as ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Chenonceaux June 7th 2015

Sunday 7 June 2015 Both the Château of Chenonceau and the nearby town of Amboise are places we really want to see and on this sunny early summer day we did. Our intention was to get to Chenonceau early and avoid the crowds, as we well remember an uncomfortably crowded Versailles on our visit there four years ago. Despite our good intentions, the reality of driving even short distances over beautiful back roads meant our arrival at the glorious place that is Chenonceau was a little delayed, but there was no problem finding a park in the shade (both free), then strolling leisurely up the drive with the Château showing through the trees. We seemed to have beaten the tour groups and were able to enjoy the experience without jostling for position. Chenonceau is simply stunning. ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Bourges June 6th 2015

Saturday 6 June 2015 Four years ago we stayed with a wonderful French lady, a family acquaintance, in Poitiers. At the time we did not know too much about the area. She was adamant that if we ever returned to France then we had to visit Bourges. Today we are fulfilling that request. We have had some very hot days lately but the forecast is for cooler weather, about 25. So we set out to drive the 116 kilometres that Polly had plotted. This will take about two hours. We still haven't got use to the Northern Hemisphere directions. The sun is in the South and when you think you are driving West you are actually driving East. So it is the back country roads to start and then we join the 90 kph roads. Being ... read more

Europe June 5th 2015

Friday 5 June 2015 We have made a list of places that would be great to visit. Some involve driving some distance. If we had to drive about 100 kilometres in NZ it takes about 75 minutes. The roads on which we are driving it takes about two hours. The speed limit varies between 50, 70, 90, 110 and 130 kilometres an hour. Most of our driving is 50, 70 and 90 kilometres an hour. We have told Polly to keep away from toll roads. So what seems a short distance takes a while. Today we head for Villandry, a chateau with a reputation for having one of the best gardens in France. By the time we get there the temperature is nearly 30. After a quick lunch we enter the garden. It is made up ... read more

Thursday 4 June 2015 It's a glorious day to be in the Loire Valley. A clear blue sky, birds singing and a temperature to reach the low thirties. For a very brief moment we think of the single digit temperatures back in Alexandra, NZ. We are staying about 10 kilometres from Chambord, one of the most visited chateaux in the Loire. There are chateaux around every corner so which one to choose. We chose Chambord as it was close, it is also one of the biggest in the Loire and it has some outstanding features. Arriving reasonably early we were able to park quite close under a tree. Ahead of us were tour groups from about ten buses. A large group of young school children arrived at the same time as us. Thank goodness it is ... read more
