We decided to do a horseback safari in Rajasthan long before we had planned much of the rest of our trip. After reading lots of reviews, and getting quotes, we decided to go with Krishna ranch out of Udaipur. This 5 day camping trail was to take us all the way to Ranakpur, on a route that would avoid main roads and so take us over 130km. Unfortunately, after 3 weeks of sunshine in Udaipur we woke up on the first day of the trip to torrential rain. On the plus side it was much cooler so easier for both horse and rider. We were picked up from our hostel by the ranch and taken there to start the day. Their ranch is beautiful, just outside the city but you could be in the middle of ... read more

The original plan was to see the monsoon palace for sunset as advised by all the locals/hostels/guidebooks but given it closes at 6pm and sunset is at 630ish at the moment that was obviously not going to work. We considered going by scooter but thought that a bicycle might be easier in the traffic. Unfortunately no where seemed to hire out bicycles - our hostel had no idea, the bicycle shop only does tours and other people we asked looked at us like we were crazy. Finally finding somewhere that did them we set off in the mid day heat wondering what on Earth we were thinking. Especially since today is a strike day in Rajasthan so we had no idea whether the palace would even be open when we got there. The cycle to the ... read more

Today was a trip to the vintage car museum owned by the maharana. This was definitely a visit for Stephen more than me, having said that I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The museum is an easy walk at the far end of the palace from the old city. It is down a main road though so not a particularly pleasant walk. Entrance is 300 rupees per person, regardless of nationality. This is quite expensive given how small the museum is but if you have an interest in old cars it’s more than worth it. All the cars and carriages are still in working order and have a team of staff to look after them. One of the men came around and opened all the doors of the garages and told as ... read more

One of the reasons we picked the hostel we are staying at is because it got such good reviews, particularly about its amazing breakfast. We were, therefore, particularly disappointed to find it rather poor. Served on the lovely rooftop between 8-10am we arrived around 9ish to discover some cornflakes, toast, toasties and one omelette left. Stephen had the omelette and despite the fact lots of other people were turning up they didn’t make anymore. This is particularly frustrating as there are loads of cheap cafes serving much better looking breakfasts all around us. After eating (and getting cross that the WiFi kept bumping me off stopping me from updating the travel blog) we walked over to the palace. As soon as you get near it every shop front is selling leather, pashminas, tailor made clothes or ... read more

Traveling by bus is not much fun. Stephen says he feels like he’s an animal being transported by container and I sympathise with that description. On the lower bunk there’s just enough room to sit up but neither of us have enough space to lie down properly. The movement and constant use of the horn make sleep very difficult. The AC is somewhat over vigorous and the toilet (which is why this bus is more expensive) is only opened on request with strict instructions for ‘urine only’. At least it’s an experience.... We were dropped off by the side of a main road on the outskirts of the city. There were a number of tuk tuks waiting and we got one to our hostel. After showing the driver a map and negotiating a price he soon ... read more

After checking out we had breakfast for the third day in a row at the nearby Theobroma cafe. This French style bakery is full of delicious looking breads & cakes and do a very good breakfast. Nothing in Mumbai seems to open before 9am (except, perhaps, Starbucks) which rather limits an early start unless you can source food from elsewhere. Despite the fact that the rest of Mumbai was clearly still asleep (judging by the empty roads & closed shops) the Gate of India was packed and the tauts were out in force. Successfully purchasing tickets for the boat over to Elephanta Island we picked our seats and set out for the hour long boat ride. It costs a little extra to sit on the top deck. Fortunately, being cheap, we had sat at the front ... read more

Our original plan of getting up early and heading out to one of the islands failed when we woke up late. This hostel is great - cool, dark and quiet. We quickly changed our plans to include a leisurely breakfast at the local bakery/cafe and a trip to the Prince of Wales museum (its now called Chhatrapati Shivaji). The museum itself is set in pretty gardens and the architecture of the building is stunning. As usual it’s more expensive for foreigners but this at least comes with a reasonable audio guide. As is usually the way with us we discovered most of the side galleries were shut for conservation but the main galleries were open and there was plenty to keep us occupied. We found the information given in the sculpture section about the different religions ... read more

It was certainly nice to arrive back into Mumbai again after our visit to Aurangabad. Mumbai looks and feels like a proper, functioning city. There are wide avenues lined with grand, handsome buildings. There are pavements and crossing points. There are shops, cafes and green spaces. There are police who actually seem to have some authority. But best of all there is sense that the people here have something to do and somewhere to be. Mumbai is the first city in India where we can move about unmolested. We arrived into CST about 8:30 am and set off in the direction of our hostel. About halfway on our 40 min trek south we paused at Starbucks for a coffee and some breakfast. On reaching our hostel (the backpacking panda) we found a friendly and helpful receptionist, ... read more

Our driver arrived on time only for us to discover that the seat belts in the back didn’t have buckles and there was no AC. After a brief suggestion that it didn’t matter the driver took us to the office and we were refunded the difference between non-ac & ac. They again tried to persuade us seat belts weren’t needed as is was only 30km away but having seen the driving here we were less keen. Fortunately with the help of 2 security guards the driver managed to pull forward the seats and get the buckles back. We were on our way. First stop of the day was the Daulatabad fort, located 15 km out of Aurangabad on the way to the Ellora caves. This is a fort built on top of a hilltop in the ... read more

Asia » India » Maharashtra » Ajanta Caves August 29th 2018

Today was our long awaited trip to the Ajanta caves, a series of Buddhist caves carved into the rock face. Most were made in 6th & 7th centuries AD but the eldest is thought to be from 200 BC. They are of interest as the paintings are some of the earliest examples in India. The drive took over 2.5hrs as the caves are 100km out of Ajanta and the roads are in pretty poor condition. Fortunately for me I slept much of the journey and so missed the near miss with a bullock cart when the ox pulling it decided to change direction in front of our vehicle rather fast... As soon as you arrive the charges start. Car parking and ‘amenities’ fee were the first ones (we have no idea what the 10 rupees per ... read more
