Without a scheduled tuk tuk driver to get us out of bed we caught up with some much needed sleep. The disadvantage of this is that it gets really hot by 11am and most of the sights close at 5pm. Fortunately we still managed to fit in all our planned sights today, even if the afternoon ended up a little rushed. The order we have seen things in is rather odd if you look at a map. There is method to the madness though, as we bought a ‘composite’ ticket at the Amber fort yesterday. Valid for 2 days this ticket gets us into the sights we saw today (plus others we didn’t have time to visit). We have left the sights not included (most notably the city palace) until tomorrow when the ticket is no ... read more

We were picked up at 9am by our tuk tuk driver from yesterday and headed over to the Amber fort. Our driver was very entertaining and tried to give us plenty of information on the way. Unfortunately, like many self appointed ‘guides’ we’ve met most of his ‘facts’ contained errors which we were only too happy to correct. I think he was a little surprised (I’ve come to the conclusion that most people don’t seem to read the guide books) but we hope that he will now tell people the city was painted pink to celebrate a visit from the prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, not Prince Albert. That’s not to say we didn’t learn a great deal from him, at only 23 he’s been working for 8 years to help pay for his ... read more

We were on the train until 2pm today so there isn’t a lot to report. Given it was such a long journey we were lucky to have our 4 berthed cabin to ourselves. Unfortunately we didn’t discover this until the next morning. The door of the cabin wouldn’t stay shut without locking it. The ticket man thought other people were getting on at Jodhpur (approx 6am), so we couldn’t lock it. This meant that at 2am Stephen was desperately trying to make a paper device to hold the door shut (and thus block out the light and noise) whilst still enabling other passengers to get in. We were then rudely awoken by cleaners coming in and turning on all the lights at 7am. Fortunately by this point we realised the other passengers weren’t coming so we ... read more

Today has felt rather like a spare day in Jaisalmer. Our original itinerary had left us with a long time in Jaisalmer as Stephen had wanted to go on a camel safari (up to 7 days was threatened). Having been warned by numerous people that they are smelly and uncomfortable this was reduced to a couple of days. Whilst traveling we had since decided that multiple days in the open desert under the scorching sun didn’t sound that fun and so the camel trip became half a day rather than multi day and our time in this tiny town increased to 3 and a half days. You do not need this long in Jaisalmer. Trying to think of how to spend our last day (train at 1am) we decided to see the small museum at the ... read more

Ignoring our hotels advice (and because we have so much time in Jaisalmer) this morning we decided to look around the fort palace. The hotels argument against it, and that of a number of guides, is that it’s expensive and no different to those we’ve seen in Udaipur & Jodhpur. I suspect without the audio guide provided we would have agreed with them as the rooms are fairly plain and the artefacts similar to those in the other palaces. With the guide though, we found it well worth a visit. We enjoyed learning about the history of the Jaisalmer royal family and the times when the fort fell, leading the women to commit suicide to avoid capture by the enemy (Jauhar) and the men to ride into battle and to their deaths. After an unexpectedly long ... read more

This morning we headed back into the fort to see the 7 Jain temples inside. Despite not being as early as planned we got there before 10am and I was surprised by how quiet it still was, with many of the stalls not yet open. The opening times of the temples seem to change a lot. At present the first 3 are open from 8am and the rest from 11am. They all close to tourists at 2pm. Ticket purchased we wondered around the first 3, enjoying the intricate carvings and shady balconies before heading into the rest of the complex at 11am. These temples were made in the 1500s with the same type of sandstone as the rest of the fort. I was surprised to see some very seductive women carved and some warriors holding the ... read more

We travelled from Jodhpur last night by train which tuned out to be a more interesting journey than expected. Firstly on walking into the station there were people everywhere to the point where our tuk tuk couldn’t drive in due to congestion. There were people sleeping on the floor, on blankets and on camp beds. It looked like a refugee camp. Our first thought was that the trains were in disarray but we were pleasantly surprised to find all trains running on time. we were told there’s a religious festival somewhere which I presume they’re travelling tobut no one seemed to be able to tell us where or which festival! Picking our way across the bodies we found our platform and as by some miracle managed to get a seat. We ended up sitting next to ... read more

We have been staying in the Raj Mahal Boutique Guesthouse which has been superb. We were in the King suite as the other rooms had sold out and were pleased with the huge, beautifully decorated room, cleanliness, modern bathroom and balcony complete with a swing. It has let itself down a little on the penultimate day though. As we were enjoying dinner from their restaurant last night we had a new member of staff come over and ask us when we were checking out and if we could pay now. Given we hadn’t finished our dinner, or had our breakfast (not included in room price) yet, and didn’t have a card on us we were a little taken aback. The owner then came over, repeated the questions and then explained that yes, we could pay by ... read more

After yesterday’s beautiful sunny day we woke to clouds this morning. Despite this for the third day since arriving in India we have had no rain and the cloud provided welcome respite from the heat of the sun. Stephen has decided the rain is following us. To be fair given how poor the monsoon has been in Rajasthan this year, with many of the lakes we’ve seen looking rather empty, it would probably be a good thing if it did. We walked up to the fort museum via the Fateh Pol gate this morning. Despite our concerns after finding it difficult passing through the fort yesterday we entered without any problems. As we walked towards the museum we noticed the security guard by the entrance to the zip line and gardens wasn’t at his post. We ... read more

We arrived in Jodhpur late last night and it was a little bit of a shock to the system after 5 days camping in the countryside. It’s noisy and busy and full of Tuk Tuks. Our hotel (Raj Mahal boutique home stay) is in the old city, which our taxi was not allowed to enter, so after a 3 hr drive from Ranakpur we had to switch vehicles and get a tuk tuk the last little bit. As we drove from Ranakpur to Jodhpur the scenery changed dramatically from lush hills to flat, stony, arid looking land with small scrubs and poor grasses growing. We left the clouds behind, the sun came out and the temperature soared. The hotel is not in a auspicious area. It’s down a small alley full of rubbish and surrounded by ... read more
