Today has felt rather like a spare day in Jaisalmer. Our original itinerary had left us with a long time in Jaisalmer as Stephen had wanted to go on a camel safari (up to 7 days was threatened). Having been warned by numerous people that they are smelly and uncomfortable this was reduced to a couple of days. Whilst traveling we had since decided that multiple days in the open desert under the scorching sun didn’t sound that fun and so the camel trip became half a day rather than multi day and our time in this tiny town increased to 3 and a half days.
You do not need this long in Jaisalmer.
Trying to think of how to spend our last day (train at 1am) we decided to see the small museum at the Mandir Palace. This is part hotel and part Royal residence.
The museum is split into the Durbar hall and the Zanana. It’s very small but we found the old photos and letters from the Royal family of interest.
There are other ways to spend your time in Jaisalmer - there’s a war museum & cultural museum we haven’t seen, and some cenotaphs just outside the city. After the museum we decided to just relax for the day though.
We headed back to our little coffee/book shop (the travellers cup) in the old fort and booked accommodation for our next couple of cities. We then went back to the palace and enjoyed a lazy afternoon lying (in the shade) by the pool.
Whilst I enjoy swimming, Stephen doesn’t, so they kindly let us only pay for one person (a very high 450 rupees). I’m sure some of the other hotels are cheaper but this came with super comfy loungers, beautiful gardens, a fab shower, bar service to the pool and almost nobody else being there.
Afternoon well spent swimming, reading, chatting and generally relaxing we went back to our hotel (who kindly gave us a room to use until our train departure time). We had a lovely candlelit dinner on the rooftop before I had a nap and headed over to the station.
