Off to Ireland this afternoon with Andrea Rose. She has grown into such a lovely young woman, but we haven't spent as much time together since she started college two ana half years ago. Soon shell be off on her internship or Peace Corps mission, so were considering this her graduation trip. Delta air to Atlanta connecting to Dublin. So far the flight is right. See you in Ireland!... read more

A mountain of laundry to do, 4 - 8 gig photo cards to sort through. No food in the house, but too tired to go shopping. Will meet the kids for dinner. A few words about Tauck Tours. Awesome, excellent, wow. Our guide, Seth, warned us ahead of time that this adventure isn't like anywhere you have ever been before. This is Africa, T.I.A. We found ourselves repeating that acronym often, in a humorous way. Usually it had too do with squat toilets or animals blocking the road,or after visiting a Masai boma and smacking your head on the ceiling. Tauck included every meal, stayed in the best accommodations in each area visited. The hotels were fabulous. If I had to choose, it would be the Kempinski for its Serengeti waterhole location. The animals came to ... read more

Nairobi is a bustling city with a lot to offer. Heightened security makes one feel ill at ease to go outside the hotel. Who would want to, the Serena had a lovely gift shop, beautiful.swimming pool area , a real tropical paradise. Both meals we had there were excellent. Some of our group were taken by Rover to shop, but I am glad we stayed to rest before the long journey. The airport trip was hectic, people walking up to your car at stoplights hawking everything from jumper cables to e apples, newspaper sellers to begging women. The airport itself was a similar process to home. KLM allows two checked bags, so I checked my Tauck ruffle as well as my bag, and all my gifts made it home safely, wrapped in clothing. Inside security there ... read more

Our 830am wake up knock included coffee today. What a treat to have one last cup of fantastic Kenyan coffee in our cushy beds. Bags were collected by Sammy with the big grin. After a leisurely breakfast we got into the vans for the airport ride. No wildlife this time, which made it easier to say goodbye. The Air Kenya flight was a Dash 7, so big there were other people aboard. First time that had happened. Landing at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, we saw many planes from International Food Relief organizations. There were also several groups of adorable school children in uniform, perhaps on a field trip. I wish I had my camera out to snap some photos, but it was packed away. We drove past some very poor areas to get to the Nairobi ... read more

It was a double wow day. We woke very early for a 520am departure for the hot air balloon flight. The roads in the Mara are gruelingly bumpy. Having had a sore tailbone since the second night at Ngorongoro, just as it was feeling better the roads got worse. Not that I am complaining, just an observation for those who think they would like to go to Kenya and Tanzania, but may have a weak or sore back. I'm glad I was pretty we'll trained before leaving home. I digress. The hot air balloons were on the ground, ready to be filled. We climbed in and sat with our backs toward the ground, feet up, holding on to a rope, pretty claustrophobic while the captains and crew tried to fill the balloons and take off. It ... read more

An early call this morning fir the drive to the airport for the Air Kenya flight to Masai Mara. This lace is an hour flight from Nanyuki, so really out in the middle of nowhere. It is the continuation of the Serengeti justices in Kenya, above the arbitrary line drawn by the Germans and British during colonial times. Anyway, our flight in a Twin Otter was goo, scenery beautiful, lots of very organized farms and forested hills. On arrival the Fairmont Mara had vans pick us up and whisk us the 20 minute drive to the "tented camp" voted one of the top 10 hotels in Africa. Fairmont really does a great tented camp! The tents are right on the river, a family of hippo right below the bank outside our cabin. There are about 10, ... read more

Slept in this morning, then off to Nanyuki Spinners and Weavers, where a short tour showed the whole process from raw wool to woven product. The women work very hard so it was a pleasure to buy from them. There is an elementary school as well as girls secondary school adjacent. On the way back to the hotel we visited a Benedictine monastery where they hold weekend retreats for young people. Brother Andrew showed us around. It was meager but felt very spiritual. He explained the work they do there, hosting groups of children and travelers from afar for African Bible study and personal reflection. After lunch some of the group went to visit a former actress, Donna Peabody, formerly married to William Hurt. Carol said she seemed lonely living here in Africa by herself. After ... read more

Mt. Kenya Safari Club has a grand past. Today we went to Ol Pejeta, which means fresh green grass. Inside the park was the Sweetwaters chipanzee sanctuary, funded by the Jane Goodall Institute. I am starting her autobiography tonight, it helps to know more about her work, then to see it in action. We walked the wooded grounds, it was very jungle-like. We learned from our guide that there are 41 chimps on two sides of the Nanyuki River. Chimpanzees don't swim so the factions from different parts of Africa will not intermix. There would be much violence if they ever did get together. We watched many of them and their actions are very human-like. I could have stayed longer, but there was more to see. Giraffe, impala, and finally rhinos, white rhino, which first was ... read more

My fear of flying in small planes over, we connected in Nairobi private airport for the flight to Nanyuki. In a fertile farm belt, this was the area of the Mau Mau uprising, led by Kenyatta, then imprisoned, and like Mandela elected president when he got out of jail. He turned out to be hugely corrupt, funneling billions in foreign aid to his family and friends, while Kenyans starved. Nanyuki seems much richer than towns website have seen in Tanzania and Amboseli. Clean, paved streets, architecture instead of huts thrown together. Along the road are lovely estates left from British Colonialism. We passed many, many boarding schools, even a World Vision enclave. On arrival at Fairmont Mt. Kenya Safari Club, we were welcomed by some Masai, but a different tribe. We are staying right on the ... read more

Today was amazing! After breakfast, a visit to a Masai village or Boma. First, I don't believe in many Masai customs, and Seth aluded to female circumcision as a topic we all agree upon, so it wasn't touched upon. I am reading "Facing the Lion, Growing Up Masai" which delves into the reasons why Masai do as they do. But it can't explain it until you see it. It is so primitive, yet such a lively culture. The physical adornments, the bead work, the colorful clothing gleaming in the sun. This group lives in the shadow of Kilimanjaro, herding cattle. The children are precious. Only the very young were in the boma today, the older children were in the school supported by the Serena for this and another village. There was a demonstration of how they ... read more
