In the early morning we had sunrise Tai Chi on the upper deck, it was invigorating! After that morning coffee and chatting, then buffet breakfast, packing, and disembarkation. It was a great way to see a gorgeous place. We drove 2 hours or so to a beautiful golf course for lunch and repacking of our large and small bags. Then headed another 1.5 hours to Hanoi airport for the 2 hour flight to Siem Reap Cambodia. On arrival there it was like coming into another time. Siamese pitch roofed terminals, stairs off the planes, like an old Bogart movie, it was balmy and felt sexy in a way. Inside, they had just that day changed the format of Visa on Arrival, and there was some confusion for a few minutes, but we soon got the hang ... read more

This morning after a leisurely breakfast and last bit of sightseeing on our own we boarded a bus to the new port at HaLong Harbor, and our beautiful Paradise Cruise Line junk for our overnight excursion. The trip up was about 3 hours, and the guide tried to make it interesting, but after an hour or so, it was redundant. The road was under major construction, nothing that could have been helped, and will be wonderful once it's completed! It is a glimpse into daily life of rural Vietnamese in the North, mostly farmers and factory workers, and those that support them. Get there, get there soon, Donald Trump is building a mega resort with a private club casino, and it will not be the same after it's finished. We had packed an overnight bag, a carry ... read more

This morning we met our group in a private breakfast area at the Metropole Hotel. Our Tour Guide, we called him Son, gave us a briefing on what our next two weeks would entail, beginning today. It was to be a fun filled journey through some of the most remote areas of the world, seen in a way most tourists cannot, from a river boat on the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers. But first, the highlights of Hanoi today. And we were off! Ho Chi Minh's Tomb (he wanted to be cremated, but the Leninists wanted him embalmed and adored like their great leaders), then the amazing Temple of Literature and it's gardens, the One Pillar Pagoda (yawning by now) then a riveting visit to the Maison Centrals (dubbed the Hanoi Hilton by American Pilots held ... read more

Hanoi is a bustling city with an intriguing past. A few minutes from the Hotel Metropole is Hoan Kiem Lake, which is the hub of activity in the center of the city. There is a very wide pathway around the lake and it is where people come and run, walk, do Tai Chi, see and be seen, bring their families, play checkers and chess, and many other day and evening activities. There are small restaurant and Pho shops dotted throughout the park. This is a walking thoroughfare from wherever you are to the market area of Old Town, and myriad of shops on crazy streets with everything under the sun to shop for or see. It's easy to get lost here, so ask anyone for Hoan Kiem, and they will point you back to the lake, ... read more

Glad I had the Hotel Metropole picking me up. A uniformed gentleman whisked my luggage from my hands and me out the door and into my waiting car. On the console was cold water bottles and macaroons, a specialty of the hotel. The driver, in his impeccable English, told me it would be 45 minutes to the hotel, that I had WiFi if I wanted to work, and he pointed out points of interest along the way. Next year the huge modern airport terminal will be finished, and the following year a gorgeous new suspension bridge to cut the drive to/from the city to less than 20 minutes. Hanoi is quickly becoming a new world city. This is a non-tipping society, it was all I could do NOT to tip this wonderful guide into the city. ... read more

I was very apprehensive about traveling alone to this part of the world. Things were nerve wracking getting ready. I had chosen Cathay Pacific Airlines via Vancouver for the Pacific route, and am sure glad I did. I had chosen Premium Economy, and it was wonderful! Footrests. How can such a little thing make such a big difference? I am 5’3” and my feet never touch the floor. The simple multi-level foot rest, like buses have, got the backs of my legs off the seat and blood flow was ultimately better. Out tiny cabin had it’s own toilet which stayed clean and fresh through the 13 hour flight. We left Vancouver at 2:20am, had a dinner, mine was a diabetic meal with lovely fruits and vegetables with moist chicken. I slept 8 hours straight. When I ... read more

I had arranged to arrive Athens on the day of sailing. The austerity riots erupted and there were random strikes by labor unions. The airport was shut down for a day, so I quickly arranged to fly in a day earlier. I will remember this forever, and take that extra day so I don't have to fret over these sorts of things. Luckily my favorite hotel in Athens, the Athens Gate, was available and not too near Syntagma Square where the unrest was unsettling. Delta SEA to JFK most people slept until the second half. In flight movies, comfortable leather seats. Nice 767. Preferred seats that recline six inches as seat moved forward Short layover, onto AB 320 a fully full flight. Slammed up against a wall ( no window at row 15), very uncomfortable seats. ... read more

We have a day at sea today , so I chose to have room service breakfast delivered at 8:00am, my usual coffee, yogurt and croissants with jam to get me going. I set out on foot to find my way around this beautiful ship. I have been on her sister ships the Oosterdam and New Amsterdam, but this is a little bit bigger than those two, with a few added show rooms and more dining options. I chose a spa treatment about noon to both help my poor aching muscles from my poor sleep on the flights, and my sore feet from walking all over Rome. After a short nap, I headed up to the Lido for a small bite from the buffet. They always have a great selection of meat salads, those Scandinavians like their ... read more

I woke early as one does flying west to east. I set out on foot before shops were opened. I stopped for coffee and a pastry, mmm, Italians can do breakfast pastries well, not quite up to French standards, but a nice second place. They have lattes far and a way ahead of the rest of the world however. As I sat and people watched on the other side of the Tiber, I heard racing cars come zooming back. Police women who had been standing on the corner topped pedestrians from crossing the road, the hundred or so Lamborghinis were back! And they had the right of way again in the city, and all traffic was frozen as these rich folks played their little rally game on a Friday morning as people were trying to get ... read more

My flight from Seattle on Delta nonstop to Paris was delayed by two hours. Cargo was not balanced, according to the Captain. We had to sit on the plane while it was rearranged. Then we had to wait another hour for extra fuel because they were given permission to fly at warp speed to catch up on some of the missed time. I had booked Economy Plus so I could hopefully get some decent sleep on the flight. A couple of hours into the flight the woman next to me had an "incident" and they called for a doctor. The flight attendant put me in the only other seat available on the flight, Row 36, in the middle! I could not sleep a wink! I had to lean forward with my blanket and pillows on the ... read more
