South America » Peru » Cusco » Pisac April 8th 2011

The next leg of the journey takes us from Cusco to Pisac, stop off point for the Inca Trail. We don't just go straight there of course but make a few stops along the way to see some of the Incan sites in the sacred valley. The first is a water temple where the water is still running through the huge interlocked blocks of stone that the amazing Incan stone masons managed to fit so snuggly together using no mortar. Further on we climb up these huge ancient terraces at a fortified site. The terraces are huge, each at least 12 foot high. Unfortunately Max is in overdrive, spouting off at great length about the history of the site. Some of us find it more interesting than others. I have a great photo of one of ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco April 7th 2011

We headed off on a hike up hill out of Cusco the next morning following Max on the trail of a Sexy Woman or so it sounded like every time he mentioned where we were going! The guys were walking pretty fast strangely enough, can't think why when they were surrounded by sexy women already pfffft! Of course it wasn't Sexy Woman but Saqsay Waman (or 'stuffed full eagle' according to Max!). And so began a day of Max spouting off at great length about his favourite subject the Incas. I guess he is proud of his heritage, but it was really way, way, way, too long a spiel each time. I'm afraid I switched off after a bit. The site itself is however very impressive. It was a fortified garrison type place and you can ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Puno April 6th 2011

So the choice was to pay $220 to live it up on the 'Orient Express' train journey between Puno and Cusco OR to slum it on a tourist bus. Most of our group chose to posh it up on the train and by all acounts had a great time getting drunk on happy hour pisco sours and full to the brim with 3 course posh nosh and afternoon teas. They did however have to endure 2 panpipe bands but I think by the 4th pisco sour they quite enjoyed the 30th rendition of the song re-named 'There's only one Barry Landlord' by Stef and Eddie - joke from back home - they're funny up north (!) that is always played by EVERY band in EVERY restaurant. I think they were so drunk they even bought a ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca April 5th 2011

The next day, blissfully free of pain after the huge injection and drugs but still pretty weak, this Broads girl missed out on a boat trip to visit the reed islands on Lake Titicaca (sad face...can't find the right symbols on this keyboard!) and rested in bed instead. The others came back with lovely pics so I didn't miss out too much. They were all dressed up in typical costumes of the area and looked in varying degrees fab to ridiculous (I'm not going to mention names!). After the others got back I managed to force some soup down me (Drs orders) and a little stroll around Puno. Yet another election rally parade was in progress and this area's candidate was actually there but he only seemed to be able to muster the support of all ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca April 3rd 2011

We arrive late in Puno at our plush hotel, grab a quick bite to eat then hit our heads on the pillows before our boat trip on lake Titicaca the next day. Marnie my roomie has a grandson who thinks Lake Titicaca is hilarious and renamed it Lake Titi poo poo hence the title of this post! In the night I suffer a bout of very painful stomach cramps and back ache - if I didn´t know better I´d have said I was having contractions it was so bad! All passes by and I get a few hours sleep and think this is the end of it as I´m right as rain the next morning - apart from the continuing diddley squits! So we all set off on rickshaws to the harbour and board our boat ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon April 2nd 2011

So the next day expectations are high as we rise really early to be able to get to the condor watching spot in time for their morning warm up sessions. We stop at a small town on the way where the local ladies were making the most of us tourists, dressed in their highly colourful and decoratively embroidered costumes, and holding huge birds of prey on their arms and on their heads for us to photo and then of course we duly had a go ourselves - solas expected for this privilege. As we turn off the main road and head towards the Colca Canyon Wilo pipes up with ´Are you all ready for a road massage´ and he wasn´t kidding as we got jolted and bumped on the rough track. One side the drops got ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon April 1st 2011

Another coach journey and more interesting facts and figures and tall tales from Max our tour guide. Today we were on our way to the Colca Canyon region where we were hoping to see the amazing condors. We would be going to our highest point of the trip at just under 5000m. As we headed out of Ariquipa we were lucky enough to have much clearer skies than the day before and were able to see the volcanoes in all their snow capped glory. Apparently the last eruption was about 100 years ago, but if it happens again we were not to worry as we would get a two minute warning! We have been joined by the lovely Wilo, our guide for the Colca Canyon part of the trip and he kept stopping the coach for ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa March 31st 2011

Awaking the next morning after our long, long journey and collapsing into bed, we were amazed to see how wonderful the hotel in Ariquipa was. We were staying in a converted Bishop´s House with little court yards, beautifully tended gardens, rooms with antique furnishings and all sorts of intriguing artifacts decorating the hotel. It very much reminded me of the Heritage Hotels I´d stayed in when I was travelling in India. A picture paints a thousand words so you´ll have to wait until I get a chance to upload some photos. We set off with Max into Ariquipa, first to have a look around a local indoor market. Normally I would have found this fascinating, but in my rather fragile state the sight and smell of minging, raw animal parts covered in flies wasn´t exactly appealing! ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca March 30th 2011

Woke this morning to the wonderfully inevitable diddley squits! This coinciding with a 12 hour coach journey all the way to Areiquipa! Thank you Mr Imodium, Lottie loves you! After hours of more desert scenery, followed by hugging the shore line of the Pacific Ocean we made a little stop at the cliff top town of Chala and had tea overlooking the bay. Wonderful crashing waves and bizarrly vultures but also a few sealions. Chala used to be a very poor place to live until silver and copper mines were discovered 6 years ago. Now it is very prosperous as a result. We were carrying on along the shoreline road when all of a sudden Max and the driver pointed out something to each other and we all piled out of the coach again. We all ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines March 29th 2011

We left the beautiful hotel at Huacachina the next morning and set off for Nazca. On the way Max kept us well informed about the region and some fascinating snippets about Peruvian life. We are still in the Ica department which is mostly a desert region growing grapes for wine and Pisco plus other crops. If you are interested the recipe for the famous Peruvian cocktail Pisco Sour is: Pisco, angustura bitters, egg whites and sugar. Tasted lovely. We found out about a week long festival that takes place at harvest time in the region. There´s a carnival and lots of singing and dancing and making merry. One local custom involves bringing a huge cut tree to the town, decorating it with presents, sweets and chocolates then couples in funny costumes with face paints and the ... read more
