Got our replacement Koni shocks, which were organised by Ultimate. We were then free to explore Perth and surrounds. Very hard to get to Information Centre in City, so we gave up and drove to Fremantle for the day. Had fish & chips for lunch at Cicerello’s on the waterfront, drove through Cottesloe Beach and to Kings Park. Lots of people so we gave up and will come back another time. Rang the Pipers, whom we met in Coral Bay and arranged to catch up on Sunday afternoon. The kids were very excited and as soon as we arrived the kids just clicked again and had lots of fun playing. Diane had made lasagna, and we enjoyed a home cooked meal. Went to the Perth Mint and had a tour and saw a gold pour. Enjoyed ... read more

Drove past Emu Downs Wind Farm - not all of the turbines were going - on the way to Dandaragan. We stopped for lunch at Pioneer Park which was next to the sporting complex. You could stay there with a powered site, toilets and showers. All very new and clean, but at 12.30pm it was too early to stop. Headed to New Norcia through Moora (town of murals). There were lots of canola and wheat fields on the way. New Norcia is a town which was built by the Benedictine Monks. Was too late to go on the walking tour of town, but had a look at the beautiful buildings, until the kids had had enough. Down to Wannamal Rest Area and camped right next to the BBQ shelter to keep the swags dry overnight. There ... read more

Arrived in Geraldton nice and early and went straight to Information Centre. Found out where Bureau of Meteorology is and booked into the caravan park. Set up and drove out to the BOM - right next to the airport. The tour was really interesting, and as we were the only ones, it was very relaxed. Got to see the old instruments as well as the new. They check one against the other regularly. Alex and Kate seemed to enjoy themselves. In fact Alex wants to go back for another tour. Watching the weather balloon being launched was fun and we then went inside to watch the computer track it and receive the information back. The information is fed to a secure site on the internet and is interpreted by weather forecasters in Perth. Went to the ... read more

Left by 8am to go to Steep Point (the most westerly point of Australia) - only 160kms each way. Well, it took us about 2½ hours to get there. The road is a 100km dirt road which is used by the salt mine on the way. Once you turn off, it becomes a winding sandy track. Had to reluctantly let the tyres down to 20psi. It makes traction so much better. We had phoned the ranger to let him know we were coming out (in case of trouble) the day before and how nice the road had been smudged or graded for us. Well, we got to drive up sand dunes, through sand dunes, along the beach, over rocks and finally past Carrarang Station’s holiday house to the ranger station. It cost $22 to use the ... read more

Arrived in Carnarvon and got supplies and went to the One Mile Jetty for lunch. There was a little tram that used to be used on the jetty which we rode out on and walked back to the car. What they didn’t tell us was someone had lit a fire on the jetty and it was burnt out 3 quarter’s of the way to the end. While we were out there, we saw a dolphin and a turtle swimming around the jetty. They grow bananas and lots of other tropical fruit at Carnarvon and they are watered from the water pumped from the sand of the Gascoyne River. This sounded strange until we saw the river (photo says it all). Also saw the huge satellite dish (photo on other camera, which I don’t know how to ... read more

Drove to Cape Range National Park and said hello to the families we met at Millstream N.P. They were both at T-Bone Bay. The kids had a play together then we had lunch and went to the visitors centre. Found out that we couldn’t cross Yardie Creek because the sandbar had washed away and even at low tide there was a high possibility of getting stuck. We would also have had to drive through salt water, which Rod was reluctant to do with no protective spray on the car. Decided to spend the day looking at different spots and then drive to Coral Bay. We stopped at the sand dunes just before the boat ramp. It was a big and little kid’s paradise. We all had a run and play. You could run down the front ... read more

Went to Karratha and straight to the visitors centre. Asked about a campsite we were told about on the Burrup Peninsula. Not an official campsite we were told. There is an overflow at the Country Club for $15 a night with toilets and showers. We drove out to Burrup Peninsula. There were plenty of campsites right on the beach with no-one else around, but unfortunately Kate is not ready for real bush camping and having to take a shovel and dig a hole for the toilet. So we opted for the Country Club. The showers were hot with good water pressure - very enjoyable to get the red dirt off us. That made up for the dust and wind being out in the open. The first night we had a light sprinkle of rain again. This ... read more

On to Tom Price and stopped at Mt Bruce lookout on way. Alex, Kate & Rod walked most of the way to the lookout, but I had cracked heels & Rod said there were scary bits close to the edge that I would have stopped at. Booked into power site to charge up. Did hand washing & soaked Kate’s white shorts. Went to get groceries & to see the festival. Saw Joy & David the other Ulty from Karinjini. They booked into caravan park near us, but they stayed to do the mine tour the next day. Up Mt. Nameless for a view over the Mine, Town & area. Went to Visitors Centre in the morning to get a pass to travel along the mine road to Millstream-Chichester National Park. We had to watch a DVD ... read more

Headed down to 80 Mile Beach. Caravan Park looked full and we wanted to get down a bit further, so collected some shells, had a bite to eat and continued on to Cape Kernaudren. Three camp grounds, very spread out, just basic toilets, but a lovely view over the low tide flats out to the Indian Ocean. Unfortunately extremely windy in the morning which made it hard to pack up the camper. Drove into Port Hedland for a look around and to get mobile service for messages & to ring Ultimate for replacement spas. Got to see the trains coming in with Iron Ore and the Salt Piles awaiting shipment. Saw 2 other Ultimates and low and behold it was Jan & Peter (from Batavia Pearls). Had a chat, caught up and got some groceries. Jan ... read more

Arrived in Broome mid morning and managed to get into the first Caravan Park in Cable Beach that we tried. It was showing “No Vacancies”, but we tried anyway and we had luck. Managed to get 4 nights, no problem. Set up and looked around town. Not very big, didn’t realize that Cable Beach was a suburb of its own, not just a beach. Monday, rang Broome Toyota to get the car serviced. Can’t get in until next week, even worse as we head south down the cost, with Port Hedland an 8 week wait. Booked into the local Repco agent for Wednesday, also arranged for new shocks for the camper - should be in on Wednesday. Went to Visitor’s Centre and booked a camel ride for tomorrow night at Sunset. Looked at some pearls for ... read more
