Drove on to Black River and looked up Richard & Di’s directions. Rang them when we where at their gate - 4 kms from the house. Drove up to the house, and wow, green lawn! Chatted, looked around and eventually set up. Richard taught Alex how to crack his whip, and how to make a new cracker. He had fun practicing! Had tea with them and boy the nights get a lot cooler here. Actually got to use my pyjamas & doona! Next morning, had a shower and put some washing on. Richard & Di have arranged to weigh, tag, brand and castrate some weaners (calves). Kids thought it was going to be great fun. Helped to carry some tools down to the cattle yards, without knowing what they were for. They loved watching, but enjoying ... read more

Monday morning, rang TJM and yes, they have my credit card, so we called in there on the way south. Tried the post office again, but no luck with the envelope from school - still not in - can’t track it. Had to keep moving, so will check again in a few days to see if it can be forwarded on. Went to the bank and organised the block to be lifted from the Visa. It was a recently refurbished branch where the tellers sat at desks, no screens. They had a safe there and hardly any cash in case of a robbery. The girls said they felt safe amongst the customers, and it was so easy to speak to them. Had a look at Babinda and The Boulders, it would be nice to camp there ... read more

Well we have settled in and have joined in some of the “weekly” rituals at the camp ground. Roast on Sunday nights, nearly every night someone has happy hour, bbq or delivered pizza on Thursday nights. Went out to tea with Steve & Jenni on Wednesday night to “Yorkeys”. This is the restaurant at the yacht club marina at Yorkeys Knob. It was very nice and relaxing, with good company. Even the kids enjoyed themselves. Thursday we had a swim at Peppers Resort where Steve & Jenni are staying. There are 2 pools, one with sand and 25 degrees; the other 30 degrees and concrete base. We had fun with a giant beachball playing keepings off. Unfortunately my toes got cut underneath and got rather sore. Back to camp for a lovely shower and some relaxing ... read more

We are well settled in and have met most of the locals (people who come here from Vic, Tas & NSW every year) and even one from Balnarring who recognised the car. It is their home away from home. After seeking help from the Ultimate website on where to find the parts needed to fix the camper, we headed into Smithfield and found them, fantastic. Continued on to Cairns to look around and booked a cruise with Quicksilver to the Outer Barrier Reef for Tuesday. Hopefully the weather stays good and not too rough for the crossing. Bought the kids some RipCurl thongs after much nagging and sick of seeing their feet sweat in the ones we bought in NT. They are now happy as they can be; still fighting with each other and we have ... read more

Had showers, packed up, stocked up and went to move on. Saw there was a market down on the foreshore, so stopped for a quick look. Saw Alex & his parents (whom we met in Weipa), so we chatted for a while. They are staying on one more day, then going to Cape Tribulation. Headed out past Black Mountain and down the Bloomfield Track, there were a lot more sealed sections on the inclines and in towns, than when we last came through. Stopped at Bloomfield Falls for a look, stretch & some apples. Continued on through to Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation where it started to rain a little. This caused the tourists to race to their cars and then the car park was just about empty. We checked out the town and National ... read more

I think I really should proof read some of these blogs before I post them. Oh well, you can all gather what I mean. We made the decision to start heading south instead of going to Thursday Island. We found out the ferry cost $100 each. We thought the money better spent on the boat ride out to the Great Barrier Reef. The wind was getting stronger and each day getting cloudier. This is not what we came north for, more cloud, no way; more sun, yes please. We stopped to look at the WWII plane wrecks at Bamaga Airport on the way down. No signs, just dots on the map and the rest you have to figure out for yourself - a bit like directions to the Tip of Cape York. Discarded 44 gallon drums ... read more

Left Eliot Falls via the OTT (North end) and did 2 creek crossings before heading back to the Bypass Road. A few cars let us go past them, as we took a drive and checked out the creeks before heading off. Got to the ferry at the Jardine River and there were lots of the Endeavour Rally cars waiting to go through the check point. Some had already crossed the river, and the rest were still coming. It is a very short ferry ride for $99, but includes all your bush camping and access fees. Didn’t take long to drive from the ferry to Bamaga. Had a look at Loyalty Beach, but no pool for the kids and you can’t swim at the beach. Seisia was dry and right next to the industrial estate and wharf. ... read more

We got away from Weipa by 7.30am. Well done we thought, seeing we had to fill the water tank as well as doing Kate’s hair. Her latest hair style is a pony tail with 6, yes 6 plaits coming out of the back. Saw an older girl who does this herself every day, and it look good and lasts a few days without getting knotty - just takes a while to do. Saw the ship being loaded with Bauxite at the Weipa wharf. Made good progress up the Telegraph Road, took the Bamaga Bypass Road, it was very corrugated. Just after Captain Billy Landing the whip snapped off our aerial. It was broken so we didn’t bother trying to look for it. On to the OTT (Old Telegraph Track) to Eliot Falls and set up camp ... read more

The weekly barge came in today and there was heaps of stock at the supermarket. Got some supplies to last us for the trip up and back. We have been told that a Cadbury 200g block of chocolate is $10 (only $5 in Weipa) and soft drink is $58 for a pack of 30 cans. Rod dropped the car off at the mechanic’s at 7am this morning. They are 2 mechanics down and had our job and another job on the go at the same time. Wont be ready until late this afternoon. They are also RACQ on the side, as well as the local auto electrician. I have attached a photo of Alex’s friend, Alex and Kate’s friend Emily. Emily & her family are from Tyabb and she is Alex’s age and was at Balnarring ... read more

Well with no contact available except with the internet, we decided to buy a prepaid phone at Betta Electrical (It is Next G, with had 3G which is no good). Yes, they have one here, off the back of the newsagent. They also sell furniture there. Got it all set up and magic we were in contact with the world again. Well I’m going to dedicate this travelblog to my lost buddy, Oscar. Annette and Mum took him to the vet for me on Saturday and the vet confirmed it was cancer, just didn’t know what type or how far it had spread. They booked him in for surgery on Monday. Annette had offered to mind him until he was better. Monday morning came and David drove down to Hastings to pick up Oscar and drop ... read more
