Japan! Following your steps Karen - I love your pics and comments! My grandfather brought me a kimono when I was 2. He had been in Japan post WWII as an education advisor. With the kimono came many stories, wood-block prints (which I have) and other cultural artifacts and habits. I've always wanted to go there!
Finding nice little spots Was interesting to read, I love Japan a lot. I know a Japanese man named Yuki who is travelling the world giving free hugs for world peace, nice to see other Japanese people picking it up as well. :)
Tokyo Food I went to Tokyo earlier this year and was astonished to find these shops exist. I didn't go to this street but in the Tokyo Tower shopping center there is a shop that sells them as magnets. They really do look real. It took me a moment of thinking how is the food staying on the 90 degree plate before realizing what it was.
Fake food Yes, I also saw them in stores as magnets, USB drives, even as earrings! (Don't know that I would want sushi earrings, but hey, you never know....)
Thanks! Thank you for your kind words, Dave.
The fake food was not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. But then again, it's not going to go bad either.
Food Some Australian Department Stores also have upmarket food courts/halls, but I've yet to see a bar - I think it's a great idea! I've never thought of watermelon as exotic or 'special occasion' food :)
Expensive fruit The watermelon really caught my eye, not only because of how it was displayed, but also by its price. Today my local grocery store is selling whole watermelons for US$1.88 a piece.
Star Trek Communicators With all the technology in the world they should be able to figure out the rest of this stuff. They should beam you up if you want to be.
Small museums Sometimes it's nice to visit a small museum (with a small entry fee) Rather than plan an all day outing. I like the Getty In LA, but man, what a production to get there!
Teleport me baby Japan is closed on Monday's....I'll remember that when we plan our trip. I chuckled at your story...sorry it may not have intended to be funny. Hopefully things will improve.
Hi-tech are not always handy! Poor you! Hard work (or may be hard walk) didn't quite pay off - the museums were closed. Now I know why I am so happy with my flip phone...I don't have a smart one. About the dog of Samurai - in some Asian countries they become part of the epics. I know one famous Indian epic, where the dog actually walked with the saint to the heaven.
The joy of maps The other thing about using a real map is that folks will spontaneously come up to help you. That and maps are just pretty.
Stay tuned - I did make it to the Shitamachi Museum.
Flying to Japan We hope to go to Japan in the next couple of years. We will keep ANA in mind. Very cool that they wave goodbye. I like that. Sounds like U.S. immigration could learn from the Japanese process. I will save all your tips for our trip.
I'm an independent single woman who loves to travel. Favorite place to visit in a new country? The grocery store.
