Simply amazing!
This is in my wish list for a while. I have a friend in Chiang Mai, we want to do it together. I am glad that you shared with us some timely information. I did it in Cambodia, I could imagine how beautiful the temples look like in sunrise! You are lucky, Karen! I'm sure DMJ's Egypt ride would be wonderful too.Thank you for the lovely blog.

Balloons!
Thanks for following along. Balloon flights - anywhere - are great experiences, and seeing all those temples from the air was stunning.

Balloon Surfing!
Love your pictures from the air! It looks like it's cold in your pictures. I've always wanted to balloon ride up the socal coast. Have a great time!

Balloons over Bagan
We love Balloons.... glad you had some experienced pilots. We have had balloon rides in Virginia and Egypt. It is wonderfully serene. Glad you made your reservation.

Share the wealth
In addition to giving me a sales pitch, he also taught me a little something about the process of making decorative carvings. A good trade, I think.

End of the road
Great pic Karen. Makes one want to be there!

end of the road

Thanks, Dave
This was at the end of a dusty dirt road that turned into a dusty footpath. I like the way you can see the river between the trees.

So many pagoda's so
It is wonderful until you reach saturation. They are amazing. So great that you caught a ceremony. We were there as the sunset and the changing light was wonderful.

So many pagodas...
Much as I really enjoy Buddhist temples, I did get my fill and more.

Schwedagon Pagoda
What a wonderful place to be at this time of year Karen. May you recline and rest like the Reclining Buddha and smile like the pink nuns for the rest of your journey. Happy New Year!

Yes!
I'm glad you came along with me in spirit. I think once you start travelling it's pretty hard to stop.

A new trip!
The first time you say a word or phrase in a new language (and being understood) is so thrilling... looking forward to following your trip Karen, safe travels :)
28th December 2016

a new word
I think my biggest fear when trying a new language is inadvertently saying something offensive. When I think about all the words in English that can be embarrassing if mispronounced, it gives me pause. I remember trying to explain to two Vietnamese young men the difference between unique and eunuch without embarrassing either of us.

Have a safe trip. Keep writing

Thank you for your kind words
Thanks for the encouragement to keep writing. I will!

Speaking the language
Dave and I were talking about you yesterday and wondered how the trip was going. Great job at communicating ...and they always appreciate the effort. They didn't have ATMs when we were there so things are improving rapidly...depending on your take on things. Enjoy. Eager to hear more.
27th December 2016

Change is rapid
Thanks for following along. ATMs are just about everywhere now, even at the Shwedagon Pagoda and Bogyoke Market. I don't see a lot of people using them, but they are around.

Congratulations on your Central Lobby photos
I wanted to take photos of the Saints on my visit but was stopped before I even got to raise the camera - even though my tour of the Houses of Parliament had been organised by my local MP! As a Brit, I did of course know that Big Ben was the bell - but most Brits (me included) wouldn't know it was named after one Benjamin Hall. It's amazing what we learn from visitors! Next year, this great bell will fall silent for several months while restoration of the clock faces and the bell suspension mechanisms takes place. They won't be repairing the crack in Big Ben though - it's been there since the mid-1880s and is thought to be responsible for its familiar 'bong'.

Thanks for your kind words. And now you can win the next trivia contest that asks the origin of the name Big Ben!

Saint David for Wales

England
No matter how many times we go to England it offers a history lesson.

England
For me part of the fun of travelling is learning the story behind the story, and England has a lot of stories.
