Day 1/2 Mel took us to the Cairns international at 10.30am to check in for our flight to Darwin. When we got there we were lining up to check into the next leg to Singapore when we were lucky enough to be checked into an earlier flight straight away. Heaven knows waiting at the Singapore airport beats Darwin any day! We got into Singapore at 7.10pm local time (about 10.5 hours since Cairns) then tried to get changed to any earlier flight to Kuala Lumpur but...computer says no! We hung out in Changi airpot for 4 hours taste testing duty free drinks, getting foot massages and browsing through clothes we could not afford. Once we finally got to KL LCCT we got the Skybus to KL Sentral station. Our driver beat the land speed bus record. ... read more

Day 12 - Himeji Castle Himeji Castle is about half way between Kyoto and Tokyo. So we got off the train, threw our backpacks in a locker and headed up the road. Also know as the White Heron, this magnificent castle is built on top of a big hill and the main tower is 6 stories high. The complex is made up of 83 buildings. It was blowing a gale when we were there but the sky was blue and the air was clear. The stairs going up into the castle were super steep and a bit slippery, but it was so worth it, with all the hidden doors, paintings and views from the top. Popular culture Himeji Castle frequently appears on Japanese television. Edo Castle (the present Tokyo) does not have a keep, so when ... read more

Day 10 Arriving early on the 8am shinkansen (2 hours) from Kyoto, we went straight to yet another K's House where we had a flash double room this time, with our own bathroom, TV, A/C and huge bed! After dropping our bags off we headed straight to the Green Arena for the Sumo Tournament. The performances included displays of comic sumo and traditional sumo songfests in addition to the normal sumo bouts. There were some BIG boys there...over 2m tall and over 200Kgs...we both got photos with a couple of them! It was really interesting to watch and the crowd was loving it. The east and west champions were both there. Last year they held this sumo tour but before that there hadn't been sumo in hiroshima in 10 years. Afterwards we went to the Peace ... read more

Day 8 - Temples, Shrines, Temples, Shrines... Last night we checked into K's House Kyoto which is close to the train station in the south side of Kyoto. We dropped our bags off and headed to down town Kyoto and walked millions of miles up and down streets of restaurants, stalls and shops. Up early as usual with a big day planned. We first headed down to Kyoto station and got a train to Fushimi Inari-taisha Shire with their 4km of red tori gates. "The magical, seemingly unending path of over 5000 vibrant orange torii gates that wind through hills behind Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine makes it one of the most popular shrines in Japan. The walk around the upper precincts is a pleasant day hike. It also makes for a delightfully eerie stroll in the late ... read more

h2Day 6/7/8/h2 A few hours on the train north to Nagano where the 1998 Winter Olympics were then another hour on a private train and we landed in rainy Yudanaka. It is a sleepy little town, but beautiful! We stayed at the Shimaya Ryokan which was a traditional family run hotel with it's own onsen. Our room was traditional with tatami mat floors and rice paper walls. It's all quite low and Chris was banging his head on the ceiling every few minutes. Because it was raining when we arrived we chilled in our room and then went for dinner at this place called Asashinaya at our hotel man's suggestion. The staff were so nice and we had a big meal with even bigger beers. They gave us this little wooden plaque as a gift for ... read more

DAY 1/2 So, we've had our first full day in Japan and I think we've walked a million kms! Last night we landed at Narita airport at 8pm local time after 7 hours flying. We got the local Keise line into to aoto station then got the subway to Kuramae station. We had to check in by 10pm and we made it just in the nick of time. Our hostel K's House was about 5min walk from there. Our little 8 bed dorm was full so we decided to go for a walk up the road to find some dinner. We ended up at this cool place where you use like a ticket machine to order your food then they bring you the raw ingredients and you cook it at your own station. So fun...and so ... read more

Em and Chris go to IndiaDelhi 8.5 hour flight from London Heathrow to Mumbai International Airport. After a 5 hour delay in Mumbai spent in the Jet Airways VIP Lounge drinking and eating what ever we wanted (which wasn’t much), we finally boarded our connecting 2 hour flight to Delhi. Karan met us at the airport with a car and driver he’d hired. 23 hours after leaving our ex-home at Hollybush St in London, we pulled into our new home for the next few weeks in Gurgaon, 1 hour south of central Delhi. After rounds of hugs and kisses we were presented with the famous mama Sweety’s butter chicken. Karan had been talking this dish up for years, and it was as good as he’d promised it would be. She also made paneer (cottage cheese) saag ... read more

East side vs. West side ... learning the story We stayed at the St Christopher's Inn hostel where we drank 2 euro jagaers, beer from steins and dined on curry weaners! We went on a free walking tour of Berlin. Our guide was a young lady, and she was really good and told some interesting stories: We start off at the symbol of Germany: the Brandenburg Gate. From there we follow the line of the Wall, through the former Nazi Government District to Checkpoint Charlie. After a coffee break, we head through the 1920s Cabaret Mile and over Berlin’s grandest square – Gendarmenmarkt – to Museum Island. The tour concludes in the beautiful surroundings of the Lustgarten – the old royal gardens – in the heart of the city, a stone’s throw from some of the ... read more

Red lights, Canals, Clogs, Bicycles and Buds We flew to Amsterdam early Sunday morning. You can get into town from the airport via train. We had already booked accommodation at this rad hostel called The Flying Pig. They have queensize bunks which is great! They were so comfy and so roomy after normally snuggling together on a single bunk bed! After dropping our backpacks off at the hostel we decided to explore on foot in the freezing (but for a little while sunny) conditions. Stopping at a nice 'normal' coffee shop to warm up was really nice as it was right next to this bridge and it was all sunny and people where riding past on their bikes. The dutch always serve a bit of ginger cake or ginger biscuit with coffee. After warming our bellies ... read more

Christmas at Club Hollybush was a success filled with load of homecooked goodness, including rumballs. English people do not know what rumballs are...we've decided Aussies have rumballs and Pomms have Mince (fruit) pies. Leah and our Indian friend Karan and his mate Shitij came round. A pancakes and champagne breakfast was followed by present opening. Then we made chicken roulades and a vegetarian strudle for lunch. The afternoon was spend drinking mulled wine, smoking the sheesha and picking at a cheese platter with homemade cheese sticks. Dinner was a gigantic beef wellington with roasted vegetables and red wine, which Chris accidently spilled into the serving dish!! At this point we were too full to move so we watched the movie 'Elf' with Will Farrell and then had a bit of Christmas pudding! On the 29th we ... read more
