Christmas at Club Hollybush was a success filled with load of homecooked goodness, including rumballs. English people do not know what rumballs are...we've decided Aussies have rumballs and Pomms have Mince (fruit) pies. Leah and our Indian friend Karan and his mate Shitij came round. A pancakes and champagne breakfast was followed by present opening. Then we made chicken roulades and a vegetarian strudle for lunch. The afternoon was spend drinking mulled wine, smoking the sheesha and picking at a cheese platter with homemade cheese sticks. Dinner was a gigantic beef wellington with roasted vegetables and red wine, which Chris accidently spilled into the serving dish!! At this point we were too full to move so we watched the movie 'Elf' with Will Farrell and then had a bit of Christmas pudding!
On the 29th we flew into Glasgow and hired a car, picked up Leah and Mel and went off to explore Scotland. On the first day we went to St Andrews. St Andrews cathedral is a beautiful ruin with heaps of big grave stones and over looks the beach. It was a gorgeous day, blue skies, but still very cold. Came across a few boys playing the bagpipes
on our way to a yummy pub lunch. We then drove back to Edinburgh to check out our apartment. It was so nice...right near the city, 2 bedrooms, nice kitchen, nice lounge room!! Zac flew into Edinburgh that night and took up residence on the couch. He cooked us a nice pasta dinner and we played some yatzee and drank a bottle of vodka!
The next day we were up bright and early to have breakfast and set off on our next mission. First stop was the Wallace Monument in Stirling. His sword is in there and it over looks the once battle grounds. There is a super tight windy staircase that leads to the top and rewards you with a great view of the area. From here we headed up to find Loch Ness. The countryside was beautiful. All covered in frost and looked like a Christmas winter wonderland. At one reststop there was even a big stag...making for a great photo! By the time we got up to Fort Augustus it was pitch black (about 4pm) and -8degrees. They have made this big wire creation of Nessy so we saw that then poor tired Chris drove us
all the way back. I think it was a nearly 600km round trip! A lot for 1 day!! That night Caro came up and more yatzee and vodka times ensured.
The next day Chris and Emily took the car back then walked up Carlton Hill then checked out another super old cemetary. We spend the rest of the day exploring Edinburgh with the girls and stocking up on our winter woolies!
New Year's Eve in Scotland is called Hogmanay and there is a huge street party and also a concert in the gardens that Groove Armada headlined this year. We were right at the front fence and danced the new year in!
First day of 2009 was a recovery day. The next day we got the train to Glasgow, had a look around then flew back to London.
