Europe March 30th 2006

I hope my creative writing skills are up to the task. Believe it or not, finding internet access has not been as readily available as we expected. We spoke of bringing along a notbook but decided against it. Lesson learned, - - wireless access seems to be everywhere. Actually this entry is being made on Monday, April 10, because of the availability of access. One issue is I finally found an English keyboard. I tried a couple times earlier when I had access but the Turkish keyboard, set to English, would revert back to Turkish and create a bunch of gibberish. Must be the real meaning of computer power. I also forgot to bring along on this portion of the roadtrip, (Selchuk, Istanbul, Safron Bolu, Ankara, Toz Golu, Uchisar, and Goeme) the card reader to upload ... read more

So we are off on our adventure in just a couple hours. We have left a list of rules and does and don't's for Robb & Jesse and hopefully our trust in them and our perception of their sense of responsibility will not be misplaced. We have also provided a list of contacts to them to give them some sense of reassurance that they have not been totally abandoned, but I think these contacts will be fulfilling a double role. No doubt if we've made an error with Robb & Jesse they will be wondering how we know, or at least who we heard from. Robb just got back on Sunday from his tour of Australia with the Semiahmoo Secondary School senior boys rugby team. Seems they had a good time but we had hardly any ... read more

After Pitlochry on the 15th the kids had a sleep in day on the 16th. After 3 days of performances, . . . .the Worlds, Perth, and Pitlochry, they were a tired bunch of kids deserving a sleep in and a couple days off. So the 16th - 18th and most of the 19th have been “days off”. On the morning of the 16th it seemed like people scattered like leaves going in many different directions. Some went on extended 3 day junkets while others were taking a number of shorter one day trips such as the Edinburgh Military Tatoo, visits with relatives, or just plain trips of exploration. Sorry about the photos, I'll have to learn how to correct the orientation. On the 17th Robb and I made our way to the Stirling train station ... read more

Well I think everyone now knows who the 2005/06 Juvenile World Champion Pipe Band is so let's move on. The "Worlds" were held on Saturday, August 13 and on the 14th we were on the bus at 9:00AM to make our way to the Perth Highland Games. Perth is about an hours drive to the north of Stirling through some beautiful countryside. Perth is a larger community and has a fairly large "pedestrianised" downtown area. It is in a really beautiful setting and if I get a chance to travel here again, on my own as opposed to as part of a band trip, I think I would like to spend a couple days here. We arrived a little bit early, . . . . they were still doing some of the set up but it ... read more

Of course they won! Just a short couple notes and in a couple days when the travel stops I'll have time to fill in the details. The Robert Malcolm Memorial Grade III Pipe Band are now the 2005 Juvenile World Champion pipe band. Not only did the band win, the drum corp also captured first place, and our drummer Jessica won as the World Champion Bass drummer. The kids were far ahead of the 2nd place band, Hamilton Police, and blew the competition out of the park. I uploaded some pictures today, (I think !) See if you can find them, There should be 5, complete with captions. Today, we were in Perth, and RMM took 1st again, and came 2nd when they challenged up to Grade II. Tomorrow is an evening concert in Pitlochry and ... read more

Today is August 12th, the day before the World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green in Glasgow. I heard a rumour today that there are 269 bands competing. By 11:50AM the kids will have completed their performance and will then have the long wait till between 6:00PM and 7:30PM when results are announced. It is somewhat calm, quiet and subdued around the residence tonight. So now for what happened on August 11th. One mustn't be over optimistic but the kids had a band practice from 9:45 - 11:00AM and they were sounding AWESOME !!!. They had a big strong sound with powerful tone and I think they sounded better than the SFU Grade 1 Band which practiced right after them. (But what do I know ??) Anyhow, I think if they don't blow the competition off ... read more

The day started with a brief gathering of the parents to open wallets and hand over some more money. Costs had been finalized for tonights pre-worlds dinner so "please pay £10 each" i.e. for band member and parent. After the regular morning band practice we fed the kids early (11:30) and Robb and I ended up not scattering like everyone else so we decided to go play a round of golf on the Airthey Golf Course which forms part of the university grounds and is only a couple hundred yards from our residence. It is only a little par 27 9 hole course but I has many little challenges being built in a small valley and the banks of the valley. Robb actually asked me to play a round with him which was pretty good but ... read more

Today we started with a cake walk. Well actually the search for a cake for the kids on their return from the Worlds in Glasgow on Saturday. So Doug and I are sent to research the local bakeries and report back to "those who must be obeyed" or as they are becoming referred to here as "the Queens". The Bridge of Allan has only two bakeries so the task was within the grasp of a couple older guys. But first we had to fill and order from one Queen to pick up 4 scotch pies from a small strore called Mathiesons. They are a small bakery selling some breads, rolls, desserts, sandwiches, and pies. That task completed we made our way to the bakery their highnesses had directed us to. A similar bakery to Mathiesons staffed ... read more

Success yesterday for the band makes today a "free" day so it was off to Stirling. Joan, myself, Mike McNeil and Lori Kortshak led the tour of kids. From the university by bus to the Stirling Train station for information so Joan who leaves early can get from here to Glasgow airport. The rail people refer us to the Stirling Bus Station where Joan finds what she needs. And guess what ? We are right next to the Thistle Shopping centre and Lorie is looking for a cell phone. Of course there are phone stores in malls, . . . even in scotland. Then out the door to the streets of Stirling where the sounds of pipes are heard. Out on the streets of Stirling are a couple of "buskers" - - - two of the ... read more
