We arrived to the Tioman Islands and Air Batang a small village about halfway up the island. Headed straight for My Friends Place and checked into our Bungalow-home for the next 3 days. We quickly sunk back in the vegetative mode that comes with living on an island for any amount of time. We met our neighbours from the UK and spent the day chatting, napping and relaxing. Our time on the Tioman islands went quickly and was a mixture of taking dips in the ocean, reading our latest books and checking out the town of Air Batang (which is basically a few guesthouses, shops and a single- deathly slow- computer connected by a sidewalk). After 3 short days we headed back to the mainland by ferry before catching our bus to Melaka. The journey took ... read more

Our first day in Langkawi we relaxed on the beach and generally recovered from our long journey the day before. Rounded out the evening with a lovely lobster dinner, a walk on the beach and relaxation at the local reggae bar with our new friends Sarah and Rosie. The four of us headed for the Oriental Shopping Village (not for shopping) to catch the cable car to the top of the mountain for a stunning view. Sadly the view was very cloudy but the cable cars were still fun. After having some Malay tourists take their photos with us (who knows why? possibly they have never seen people so white before) we headed back down the mountain destined for the Seven Wells Waterfall. The taxi dropped us at the bottom of this massive hill and after ... read more

Our last day on Koh Phi Phi consisted of relaxing by the pool, eating a massive dinner at the French restaurant by the pier and preparing ourselves for our speedboat journey to Koh Mook the next day. We awoke the next morning brimming with excitement to board the boat and get on the way. It arrived at 9:30am (Thai time 9am) and we climbed aboard... that's when we realized that the sky in front of us was dark with rain and the ride would not be a smooth one. We sped away from Phi Phi and into the dark clouds. Ev had the front seat and a great view of the terror approaching. We cruised for about 20 minutes before we hit the rain. At first I felt quite smart sitting behind the driver and staying ... read more

We arrived into Bangkok and took a taxi into the city. Bangkok is different than I imagined... I was warned that it was busy and hassling but I never expected such a high rise developed city. We checked into our hotel- the Twin Towers- and the nicest room of the trip so far! We quickly headed to the 5th floor for a dip in the rooftop pool...bliss! Later that day Mark, Ian and Lola flew in from the UK to meet us. They will be with us for the next 2 weeks as we journey south and through the islands. Headed out to Pat Pong for some shopping at the markets and dinner via a tailors shop. Here in Thailand (if you haven't been) you can do things for cab drivers to get a free ride. ... read more

Sunday Morning- Happy 26th Birthday to me! Woke up to a birthday card written on toliet paper from Ev (how sweet! and a very good representative of our lifestyle at the moment) a few cards and gifts from Mom and Ev and a plan for the day. For a birthday treat we decided to go out and see a movie - in English! We scoped out the theatres and decided Hancock was the best choice. So headed down to the Airport Plaza Shopping Centre and bought our tickets for the honeymoon seats! Big (which is important in SE Asia as everyone is so small here), reclining, leather, heavenly seats. Had a healthy breakie of KFC and headed up to watch our movie in style. The film was entertaining and the first I have seen in 6 ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai July 19th 2008

We arrived into Chiang Mai around mid day on Monday and caught our free transfer to Eagle Guest House 2. Not a bad place with private rooms, AC and ensuite bathroom for only 4 pounds 50 per night (about 9 dollars per night). Bit of a backpacker shock for mom but by the following day I think she felt a bit better about her very budget surroundings. The monsoon is following us now and we spent the first day sheltering from the brief downpours while enjoying the local cafes. Had lunch at The Wall owned by a Dutch/Thai couple whose club sandwiches have now become a daily essential for Ev (even 2 to 3 times a day!-madness). We had our first (of I'm sure many) Thai oil massages. How can you not when a 1 hour ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Bugis Village July 13th 2008

We arrived in Singapore on the 10th July into the most beautiful airport we have seen in months! As we drove into town we appreciated the small things in life such as lines on the unbroken road, brand new Mercedes Benz taxis, toliet paper in the airport loos and Western fast food on every corner. Not that these things matter to us but it feels awhile since we have been in "civilization". Singapore is lovely and was quoted by mom today to be "the Asian country to visit if you aren't the kind of traveller that can handle real, poverty stricken, squat toliet Asia!" We took a bus into town to Hotel 81, a modern but overpriced hotel where we checked into our room with no windows and the shower head practically over the toliet seat. ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel July 5th 2008

During our time in Pokhara we got much and little accomplished. After our 43 days of camping through Africa we agreed we deserved time to sleep in, sit in cafes all day and enjoy the beauty of air conditioning! Pokhara is a beautiful part of Nepal and although the lake was in full bloom while we were there it was still a relaxing spot after coming from Kathmandu where car horns fill the narrow streets from dawn to dusk. Also the risk of being run over on the streets is much reduced as the heaviest traffic you will encounter in Pokhara is of the bovine kind. After our first day of heavy downpours we were blessed with sunshine every day until we left. That said the humidity and heat were fierce! We spent our days in ... read more

After a very long 24 hour journey from Cape Town, 3 flight changes and 7 hours in Abu Dhabi airport (very small) we arrived in Kathmandu Nepal. Relieved from being off the smelliest planes of our lives (evidently some cultures don't know how to flush airplane toliets) we headed through immigration. Got our visas on arrival which beats standing in the line at the Nepalese Embassy before we came. Headed outside to catch our transfer to the Kathmandu Guest House and were told by our pickup that "today is a very expensive day in Nepal" after which he asked us for 900 Rupees for the trip. After a bit of debating and calling the hotel we finally got our lift into the city. What a hassle. Lately there have been strikes in Nepal over everything from ... read more

Wrapping up our stay in Swakopmund we revisited our favourite German pub before heading south along the coast past Walvis Bay and headed for Sesriem and the dunes. We drove through some fantastic scenery before our lunch break next to a dry river bed. A very common scene in Namibia as the only rivers in the whole country that run year round are the Orange River on the border with South Africa and the river on the border with Angola to the north. On the way we stopped at Solitaire aptly named as it consists of one house, a lodge, a gas station and a Scotsman who makes the best apple pies in Namibia. Needless to say I had to try some. Heading on we arrived at Sesriem in the rain. It was the first rain ... read more
