We arrived in Cairns to find the heat and humidity about the same as Darwin- let the melting continue. We checked into our friendliest backpackers to date and set about meeting the local dog 'Chilli' and the rest of the hostel guests. Just like us, everyone here is setting off down the coast headed to Sydney for Christmas. We headed into town the first evening for a free meal. Needless to say it was free for a reason. Barely cooked pasta covered in a weak sauce but hey i guess it's food. The next day I set out to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. I have been out before in 2001 but due to seasickness and stormy weather I ended up on a glass bottom boat instead of snorkelling the biggest living thing in the world. ... read more

We arrived to Darwin and were nearly knocked out by the heat and humidity as we stepped off the plane. About 35C degrees and 98% humidity. The flight from Perth was amazing. The scenery of Western Australia was crystal clear from 37,000 feet. We flew right over the Kimberley. Just made you think about the history of the land. So rugged so empty yet so beautiful. I have never seen a place like it. On arrival to Darwin we headed to Cullen Bay to stay with Nathan and Emma. Our first order of business was to have as many dips in their pool as possible daily. I explored the local Art and History museum after a very arduous 1 hour walk through the mid day heat and humidity, albeit along the beach. As I walked along ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Margaret River November 18th 2008

From Perth we headed south to Margaret River known for its big surf and ample wineries. On the way we saw our first native animals since arriving in OZ- kangaroos. Hopping across a field as we drove I was so happy to see these animals in their natural homes instead of pent up in some zoo. I set about yelling "kangaroo" for the rest of the week every time we saw our marsupial friends (much to Ev's delight- I think I nearly scared him off the road a few times). We continued our drive into Margaret River and instantly knew we were in a very nice area. We were staying at Walcliffe House the first residence built in Margs by the Bussell family. We wound down the drive and our jaws dropped in amazement at the ... read more

After finally acclimatizing to the heat of summer (which we are following around the world) we arrived to Perth and it's freezing! Coming from the heat of SE Asia it is a welcome relief to have some cool weather however it has also forced us to break out our warm weather gear which we haven't done since Africa. We arrived in Perth where Tom, an old mate of Ev's, met us at the airport. The poor guy said he would put us up for the time we were in Perth. Little did he know we planned to stay 3 weeks! We made our way back to his house (our first proper house in half a year!!- joy!). He set about putting us right to work (as he should) and hopped on his dingo to dig up ... read more

We arrived into Honolulu after a very long 20 hour plane journey and Ev was "welcomed to America" and proclaimed to be a US Resident. Happy that we made it in before the 30 strong queue of Philipinos behind us we made our way into Honolulu via the cheap hotel bus. We checked into our slightly worn hotel 2 blocks from Waikiki Beach. We knew already that we were in paradise! Sadly they don't let you check into your hotel room in paradise until 3pm no matter how much jetlag you are suffering from or how much you beg. So we checked out the beach and caught a few zz's on the hotel couch. We finally got into our room and discovered we were the proud new owners of our most comfortable bed in 6 months. ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap October 9th 2008

After a long day and a border crossing that left us $8 overcharged for our tourist visas we have arrived in Siem Reap. Entering Cambodia left me feeling a little strange but mostly sad. I have immersed myself in reading about this country lately. Books like "First They Killed My Father", "When Broken Glass Floats" and "Memoirs of the Children of the Killing Fields" describe in detail the atrocities that happened in this country that somehow I never knew about until recently. In 1975 on Independence Day the Khmer Rouge took power and forced its city dwelling citizens out of their homes and the country as a whole into a purely agrarian society. But this is too simple of an explanation. They also proceed to murder anyone of any intellegence including those who wore glasses (as ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City October 9th 2008

After exploring Hoi An we headed south for Ho Chi Minh City also known as Saigon. Although the north and south are united you tend to sense a bit of seperation when coming this far south. The people here call this city Saigon (as they did in the old days) whereas those from the north call it by the new name Ho Chi Minh City in honor of Uncle Ho. The differences don't stop there and tend to center around poltics. As many of the southern citizens were put into reeducation camps after the war you can understand why there might be some bitterness still there. After making our way into town, searching all afternoon for a hotel we finally got settled in a guesthouse where our room was a 5 floor walkup. The city is ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi September 26th 2008

We have arrived in Vietnam and we are now officially millionaires! Not that you can get dinner for less than 20,000 Dong (just over $1) in most restaurants but that's besides the point. Happily we survived the 22 hour airport plane ordeal that brought us from Tawau in Borneo to Hanoi. We arrived to find a lush green paddy field landscape, tall French/Asian style buildings (painted on the front only- perhaps because they don't want to waste the paint if someone is going to build on either side of them??) and stately Chinese gravestones scattered across the landscape. We drove into Hanoi surrounded by hundreds of motorbikes (a scene we will have to get used to over the next three weeks as they are everywhere). Vietnam is lovely and I feel as though we are back ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Sipadan September 18th 2008

Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is a lovely city sat right on the ocean. We explored the town and the bustling night market which was full of freshly barbequed seafood including tuna, squid and prawns which I just had to try- lovely! Also had time to check out the Sabah Museum which was less than great but did get to see some longhouses recreated (which sadly is as close to a real longhouse as I will get on this trip). Ev and I also headed out to Mamutik Island which is said to have the best snorkelling around KK. We arrived to find the small beautiful island but with visibility at about 1 foot. Although I did have some bread given to me by the other snorkellers so I at least saw some fish (with ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Miri September 7th 2008

Flying from KL to Kuching again left us reeling at the cost of excess baggage on budget airlines (note to self: pack light next time!). We arrived to Kuching in Sarawak. Sarawak is our first state in Borneo (yes, a part of Malaysia) where we promptly received another stamp in our passport (semi autonomous at that!). Met two Dutch twins in the airport, Patty and Vivien, and shared a cab into town as the buses don't run until September 1st (we were 2 days too early). Checked into the Oriental Hotel before taking a stroll down the waterfront which was lovely. They call Kuching a "cosmopolitan city perched on the edge of Borneo". Well I'm not sure it lives up to that eloquent description but it is a nice city- when things are open. We happened ... read more
