I am a college student and will be graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in December 2008 with a degree in elementary education. Before I graduate I need to do something exciting so I will be spending this summer living and working in Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula. This is the first time I have done something like this so I hope it turns out to be a good experience.

Well, I am finally back in Wisconsin, but I miss many things about Alaska. My last week in Alaska was great. I was able to go on a short flight seeing tour which was amazing. I was in a float plane, something I had never experienced before. The scenery was breathtaking from the air and it was interesting to get a different perspective on the environment I had been living in for 3 months. My travels back home all went well. My flights were on time and everything was smooth sailing. Now that I am back home I am getting readjusted and back in touch with my friends and family. Next week I will be back in full swing preparing for my student teaching this semester. I have a few days of orientation and preparation with ... read more

This weekend I had the lovely opportunity of visiting the company's Kenai Backcountry Lodge. This lodge is located on Skilak lake and is only accessible by boat. It is nestled beautifully in the woods with a small lodge and some individual cabins for guests. The lodge is very eco-friendly as it uses hydro-power to run everything. Due to the nature of this lodge it is a great place to get away from everything and just enjoy the quiet and the beauty the nature has to offer. When I first got there I went hiking on the Cottonwood Trail. This trail goes up and gives you a great view of Skilak lake...a gorgeous blue lake surrounded by mountains...very peaceful and serene. I went on the trail for about 4 hours and I saw numerous piles of bear ... read more

Well, since I last updated everyone there have been a few new adventures. My family came into town so I was able to spend some time with them. They went to Homer for a couple days and then we spent a day in Seward doing a cruise/kayak tour. It was rainy the whole time we were there but we still had a great time. On the cruise we saw some sea otters, stellar sea lions, seals and dall porpoises. Kayaking was also a lot of fun. We did that out of Fox Island. We were in two person kayaks and I rode with my sister, my parents were together and my brother was with another guest who was on the trip with us. This was great fun! It was my first time kayaking and I was ... read more

I know it has been a while since I last updated my blog. I have had many adventures the past few weeks. June 26th was my boss's birthday, so the girls in the office decided to surprise her. We decorated her office the night before with streamers and balloons and then we also baked her a peach pie which is her favorite. In the morning she came in and was completely surprised and we lit candles in the pie and sang happy birthday. We were close to setting the office on fire because we used trick candles and sparks were flying. Then that night we had a very large campfire party for her and it was a lot of fun and went into the wee hours of the morning. On June 28th, I went into Anchorage ... read more

What a wonderful weekend! On Friday I climbed up Mount Cicle which is the highest point in Cooper Landing. I did this with one of my friends. It was such and intense climb and really steep. When we made it to the top it was a cloudy day and we couldn't see anything on one side of the mountain, except for clouds. It was really scary but at the same time very neat to see and experience. On our way down from the top we ran into some mountain goats. There were about 6 of them with one young one. They were right in our way of where we needed to hike. Since we didn't want any sort of encounter with them because they are much more agile on the mountains than we are we tried ... read more

This was a pretty fantastic week and I couldn't have asked for anything better. Monday night after dinner, I went for a hike with a couple of my coworkers. We hiked up the Fuller Lakes Trail. It was a beautiful hike as they all are. We reached the first lake where we were able to watch a beaver swim around for a while and then we continued on to hike up to the second lake. On this hike we saw a ptarmagin but we were unable to make it to the second lake due to water. The trail we were on turned into a creek and we tried going around it but it was pretty much just a big marsh so we decided to turn around and head back. On the hike back we saw a ... read more

Things are continuing to go great. I am getting to know everyone here a lot better as well as feeling more comfortable in my surroundings. I am not even phased anymore about going to bed in the cold and waking up in the cold. It is just now a part of my life. I have had some different opportunities the past two weeks to go out and explore. But this weekend was great! On Friday (6/6/08) I had the opportunity to go fishing on the Lower Kenai River for King Salmon. I went out with 2 of our guides and a couple other staff members. This has been my second time ever fishing (I went once before with Danielle at her cabin). This adventure started with me waking up at 3:30 in the morning to get ... read more

Well, I have now been in Alaska for a little over a week. It has been an adventure so far. I flew into Anchorage on 5/16 at midnight and had to take a cab from the airport to the house I was staying the night in. On that cab ride I was able to see Mt. McKinley at dusk because even though it was midnight it wasn't pitch black. I got picked up on Saturday to travel to Cooper Landing where I will be living for the whole summer. I was in awe the whole ride because there were mountains everywhere with some snow left on the tops and the rivers and lakes are beautiful. I arrived at the lodge I am working at and it just keeps getting better. The guests stay in small cabins, ... read more
