A rather smooth bus- and a short boat ride brought us to Bocas Town, the main town of the Bocas del Toro archipelago, on Isla Colon. Here we wanted to spend some time to take our Spanish to the next level. We booked five days of Spanish lessons for the next week and another quick water taxi to get us to Isla Bastimentos, another island of the Bocas del Toro.Everything at Isla Bastimentos is a bit more Caribbean than Panamanian, the creole people, the mixed language, the Caribbean food, the very loud music, the speed of life in general. We stayed in a wooden house above the water, which was really perfect, relaxing and had a ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Chiriquí » Boquete March 22nd 2017

We are in coffee heaven! Boquete is a little town up in the mountains, and with its vulcanic soil and altitudes, it's the perfect nourishing environment for coffee. So we got to polish up our coffee knowledge by visiting a working coffee estate and through experiencing, touching and tasting the coffee beans. With its vast grounds, splendid mountains, chirping birds and tamed with butterflies Finca Lérida is simply paradise. The air smells sweet with flowers and coffee. I did not want to leave! Rolando was our guide and during a couple of hours he passionately shared all his knowledge about the plantation, the different varieties of coffee they grow (amongst which the super gourmet Geis... read more

From Panama City with an Uber, a local bus and another local bus we went to Punta Chame, at the end of a peninsula, where the wind blows often, for a few days of physical exercise for Merijn, playing around kitesurfing. That was fun!... read more

An easy boat ride and 4x4 trip brought us to Panama City. It felt both awkward and pretty good to be back in the world of comfort, electricity and modern facilities. Panama City is a very modern city with a small antique center. A perfect base for reconnecting with the home part of the world and a perfect place to enjoy a perfect icecream, the best and freshest ceviche, yoghurt, good food and expensive beers.Although we did not want to stay very long in the city, we did want to visit... read more

Central America Caribbean March 12th 2017

Leaving at 6:00 AM with again a small but this time quite fast boat we were dropped, after just two hours of sailing between numerous small and large islands, some only a few metres with two palm trees, we arrived at Isla Naranjo Chico at Cabanas Miro. The hosts of this Cabanas were of course not expecting us but were extremely welcoming and immediately started to prepare our cabanas and breakfast. This island is the closest you can get to Paradise Island I guess. This is 100% Judith and Merijn habitat. The white sandy beach, the turquoise water, the surrounding corral reef, the hammocks in the shadow of some palm trees …. this is just perfect. ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Kuna Yala March 10th 2017

We ended up at Isla Tigre, one of the more or less 400 islands of San Blas. The island is a community island, which means there is a Kuna Yale village. The village is beautiful and because we are still very far from civilization the people live extremely basic, all houses are made of bamboo with thatched palm leave roofs. Although the men wear western clothes, all women wear their traditional clothes and jewellery and not because of the tourists (there were not other foreigners except us) but just because this is the way they live and wear their clothes with pride. At one end of the island (which you can cross in about ten minutes) the ... read more

No cars. Electricity only in the evening. A small military outpost and border village turned into …. well …. a small military outpost and border village. The weather had not really changed enough and after the sniffer dogs had checked our luggage, and after we got an entry stamp into the country, we were told there were no boats travelling in this area.So we got to explore the village which took us 5 minutes, checked in at a nice hotel, found a great bakery and one restaurant, all around the field in the center of the village which was used as the central square, the kids playground, the sporting grounds for the military and as the ... read more

South America » Colombia » Choco March 1st 2017

No cars. Only electricity in the evening. A small fishing village turned into low profile holiday village. Island feeling because there is no road access, only ultra small planes depart from the small strip in the middle of the village, and of course if the weather allows a lot of small boat activities. From Baranquilla to Capurgana took us two days by bus, van and speedboat. In Capurgana we just wanted to spend a few days on the beach and get our exit stamp to make our move to Panama. But a storm somewhere far away above the ocean pushed huge waves our way and made all water transport impossible. For us that was absolutely no problem ... read more

South America » Colombia » Barranquilla February 27th 2017

Carnaval de Barranquilla - ¡Quien lo vive, es quien lo goza! One of the world’s oldest and largest carnaval celebrations happens in Barranquilla and that's where we have spent last three days watching, enjoying and partying with the locals. The carnaval is celebrated with parades of carts and dancing people and with street parties everywhere in the city. Approaching the parade street feels like going to a music festival, long before you can hear the pumping music, only this time it’s c... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena February 24th 2017

Could it be that we started to explore South America in its most beautiful, relaxed, fun and authentic city, named Cartagena, Colombia? From the very first foot we set here, we immediately felt enveloped by the Latino vibe and with its historic buildings throughout, it feels like walking through an open air museum. Every corner we turn, there's another breathtaking view that takes us back into historic/colonial times with cobbled streets, wooden balconies and buildings painted in different colours. The old city is fortified during the days the Spaniard were trying to defend the city, with huge walls, towers and canons remaining. We've explored the city over the course of a few mornings... read more
