Geo: 27.8205, 99.7074Well, halfway through our mainland China adventure and here we are perched on top of the world at 3 850 metres above sea levels the beautiful Shangri-La and feeling acclimatised after a couple of days at altitude at Jiuzhaigou.Yesterday was a mammoth travel day. The alarm rattled the darkness at 4.45 and this was followed by the hotel wake up call at 5 am. We had packed the night before so it was really just the electricals, the safe and a few zippers and we were in the lobby settling the account and were ready and waiting at 5.20.The car arrived ...the company van NOT the Rav4....but my spirits were immediately squashed...it was the Mad Mountainman driver. And so began the SLOWEST mountain journey in the history of Jiuzhaigou. We crawled at snail's pace ... read more

Geo: 33.13, 103.55Diamonds! And pearls and emeralds......we saw all of the gems today. Truly spectacular. A highlight of the trip so far.And okay, I did get in the car with the driver this morning and he completed a very sedate four minute drive to get us close to the park entrance. Mind you, we have had two other drivers and cars during the day and for the evening activities. Mac had a talk with Kerry today expressing our reservations about yesterday's ride. Kerry informed us that Mr Fong was a "slow driver."If you are into the bucket list thing....this one should be on yours! Jiuzhai Valley (Jiuzhaigou) has been set up to provide premium access for tourists. On our visiting day over 10 000 visitors passed through the park. On a busy high season day 30 ... read more

Geo: 33.13, 103.55Some days are diamond and some days are stone. You guessed it, this was the "stone" day. An early start in Chengdu to be sure we arrived at the airport in time for the 10.30 flight. We woke at 6 am to the rumbling of thunder and when we opened the curtain Chengdu was blanketed in an angry black cloud and lightening flashed and thunder roared! A quick breakfast and we were bundling into the car for the ride to the airport. But the rain brings with it it's own challenges and we were soon stuck bumper to bumper in traffic that was not moving an inch. Our 20 minute ride to the airport turned into an hour ten crawl.A quick dash through the massive terminal two and we were tossing my overweight luggage into ... read more

Geo: 30.67, 104.07Forget everything else - because this was the day of the panda. Amy is a tough task master and greets us with a wide smile at 8 am to head for the panda Research Station. We had a treat as we got out of the car because the sun was trying ever so hard to peek through the clouds and smog. We could see it with the naked eye - not sure you can spot it in the photos. This is truly an auspicious day.Amy's enthusiasm and love for the pandas is infectious and these national treasures reside in the most amazing facility. Perfectly groomed, stunningly green, immaculate presentation (certainly the direct opposite of the sturgeon farm) and pandas everywhere (or so it seemed). And even at this early hour, the centre was crawling ... read more

Geo: 30.67, 104.07Farewells, hugs and handshakes all round and that was the end of the cruise. Our new travelling companions dispersed in the blink of an eye - we wish them well on their individual adventures.Mac had emerged from the bathroom last night with a "Houston, I think we have a problem." For some reason it looked as if the Yangzte was flowing back into the bathroom through the shower floor. There was water everywhere - seriously lapping over the tops of our feet. We were debating the solution when there was a shrill ring from the phone. I picked it up and recognised the name Coco - but after that it was a stream of broken Chinese/English. We were pretty impressed that somehow Coco knew we were into it up to our armpits (well not ... read more

Geo: 29.88, 107.709The river views have changed so much now that we are out of the gorges. The towns that cover the banks of the river are thriving metropolitan areas and and there is an endless stream of barges downstream laden with manufactured goods. There was a glimpse of the sun at sunset and patches of blue sky throughout the day but the lingering mist of the gorges has been replaced by the low lying film of grey that is the signpost of industrial smog.Food, food and more food make up the day - interspersed with the cocktail of the day (Manhattan) and a sparkling wine with the cruise directors in the evening. The challenge remains to exercise constraint and pace yourself....dinner always has offerings of an entree, soup, salad, main course and dessert! We arrived much ... read more

Geo: 31.4099, 109.676I am sure you have the rhythm of the days by now...eat, tour, eat, tour, eat.....all interspersed with a little drinking and a lot of walking.Time for a break...not from the eating and drinking though....just from the touring and the walking. We decided early that we would only do the one tour today and have some rest in the afternoon. After 8 days of travel with the itinerary loaded from 7 am till 10.30 pm we gave ourselves the afternoon off.The morning tour was a ride in a small gondola-like fleet into the Wu Gorge. This idyllic transport barge ferried us at a leisurely pace for an hour into the gorge. The water was crystal clear and a deep jade green and the tributary snaked its way through the sheer gorge cliffs which towered above ... read more

Geo: 30.7776, 111.174Well that was a little surprising. Here we were thinking that we had been cruising slowly upstream through the night only to find out we were still moored at the dock.... The boat hadn't moved an inch,If you think that life on board the boat is "cruisey" think again. The schedule is full and the activities come thick and fast. There is no rest for the wicked or even "the lucky ones".Our dining table is set for the cruise and each meal is shared with an Australian family from Sydney (Nancy, Stephen and their son Matt) and a German couple (don't know their names yet). With 5 Aussies at the table we are already loud as our combined laughter echoes around the dining room. Our German colleagues try and keep up with very limited ... read more

Geo: 30.7, 111.28As Kathy pointed out days ago, in retirement, Mac has enjoyed a leisurely 10 or 11 am start to most days so this morning's 5.30 am wake-up call was more like his bedtime during any northern hemisphere sporting event! But we were ready right on the dot of 6.15 am when the porter knocked at the door to take the luggage to our car (the new bag has worked a treat).Jenny and Mr Shin were ready with smiles and a packed breakfast and the trek to the early morning flight began. The temperature was hovering around 14 C and the rain was falling steadily and had been persistent since about 10 pm the previous night. Just saying ..... the whole guide thing is magnificent (and yes Von, that also means YOU).....Jenny had made allowances ... read more

Geo: 34.271, 108.992How could this day be anything but super special? It was always my favourite in the itinerary and we have been in training for a while!"Day 5 – Xi'an - Run to the Big Goose Pagoda"Luckily, Mr Shin and Jenny saved us and arrived on the dot of 9.30 ..... although in terms of muscle fatigue we have just about recovered from Monday's efforts on The Great Wall.First order of business was to visit the Buddhist temple...the Goose Pagoda.....referred to as the "big one" because a few kilometres away is the "small one". The seven storey ancient building is a land mark in Xi'an and is beautifully and lovingly maintained by the 40 resident monks. There is significant development in this precinct as Chinese Buddhist benefactors make significant contributions to new building projects. It ... read more
