Singapore/Kuala Lumpur 26th of January We had only three things planned for our last day in Singapore, buy a laptop for Amanda, eat at Mos burger and send some of our souvineers home we completed all three.... just. We started by posting 2Kg's worth of our/my collected souvineers mainly beer shirts and buddha statues for my buddha room, it cost about $35 Aud and will probably beat us home. Next stop was the Funan Tech centre well known as the best and cheapest shopping centre in Sing, I could have quite easily maxed out my credit card here getting my geek on. We researched for an hour or so deciding on the Samsung notebook NF 210, it has a dual processor, 250Gb HDD and 2Gb Ram a free external DVD-RW (and Amanda likes the colour) for ... read more

Singapore 24th of January This entry may be a bit short as the last entry I had spent 2 hours writing is lost as the site just lcoked me out without saving any of the text, I'm rather annoyed. We decided on a few beverages after my last depressing entry (I may need a couple after this one now) and headed to a little German Beer bar near Raffles hotel we had one quick beer and left as the beer was expensive and not that great. So we headed back to a little pub we saw earlier advertising "1 for 1 tiger beer" which is the exact deal I would have at my pub "Welcome to James' Pub, happy hour 1030 - 2300 all beers buy one get one" we found out they had a much ... read more

Last Night in Phnom Penh We spent most of our last day in Phnom Penh dodging rats and getting food poisoning it is hard not to leave PP withe the feeling that I will never return (unless someone bought me a return ticket, paid me to go and gave me spending money). We did meet a nice Canadian chick at the Mexican restaurant we ate at on the last night one of thee two establishments that had rats, strangely the only restaurant that we went to that didn't have a rat (we could see) was likely the one that gave me food poisoning. At least they seemed surprised to see a rat at the Mexican restaurant, at the internet shop I warned one of the people who sat down next to me and she asked me ... read more

Night of 19th of January Amanda and I as planned finished the night at a nice French restraunt overlooking the Mekong and the Cambodians playing in the dwindling sunlight. They play some quite interesting games including badminton with no net and kick your brother but my favourite was a family of 3 kids a girl about 5 a boy about 7 and their little brother 1-2 (just started walking). The game was quite basic run around and hide from your little brother. It took them all over the path around the Mekong and looked like heaps of fun. We had a couple of drinks during happy hour/s (5-8) and made the most of the advertised French cuisine by ordering a pizza. 20th of January - Toul Sleng (S-21) and the Choeung Ek killing fields Don't read ... read more

18th/19th Phnom Penh First of all I apologise for my atrocious spelling throughout the blog (Amanda told me how to spell atrocious). The day went as planned after a bit of a sleep in thanks to the bourbon we bought in Siem Reap. We left the hotel about 0930ish and walked to the royal palace with the every tuk tuk driver saying hello and calling me by my Cambodian name Sir Tuk, which will now be my Australian name, so please take note. The royal palace was closed even thought the sign says open from 9-11 2-5 so we walked around the corner to the National museum which was worth a look, I must admit I am getting sick of seeing a shit load of buddhas in a room. Especially as we will have our own ... read more

Phnom Pehn I will quickly finish up Angkor Wat. The highlight of the Angkor tour was without a doubt Bayon. It was the site with the most intricate details and the most amazing faces. The whole experience was made all the better due to our cunning plan to avoid the swarm of tourists. We decided to have lunch an hour later as all the tourist buses are locked in to pre booked restraunts at 1230 so we had Bayon basically to ourselves. There are 148 faces still intact all of which are in fantastic condition thanks to the ingenuity of the Hindu invaders who instead of destroying the faces of buddha reconditioned them to represent their gods, with little to no work. One of the Hindu gods has three eyes so the Hindu tradies just used ... read more

Siem Reap, Cambodia We were sad to leave Laos as both Luang Prabang and Vientiane had their own charm but also excited to start our Cambodian leg of our trip. We got in our pre booked taxi around 5 in the morning, I had a shit nights sleep I don't know which hotel was worse Hote Lao (construction site) or Inter City hotel which was like living without walls or windows I heard a couple talking to each other at about 0400 and thought they were in the hall way outside our room only to here their door open there bags wheel downstairs. This couple (Americans) were in our prearranged cab when we got downstairs and if it wasn't for there cab arriving later probably would have taken ours. If I was on the amazing race ... read more

Adventures in Luang Prabang We woke up earlyish even though we drunk the mini bar out of booze after our bus trip. We decided to make the most of our free brekky and moved on to do some wat-hopping. Again I'm struck by the chilled atmosphere and easy-going people in Laos and especially LP. There is also a shitload of dogs, well-fed and curious (Amanda adopted three). The place definitely has a touristy atmosphere. The wats seem more real here, as the monks actually seem to live in them. I feel weird taking photos of the monks so We've been papping (papparazzing for the newbies) them through trees. We came across a set of stairs with more then the usual amount of tourists (and tourist profiteers) on them so we bought a gift for the gods ... read more

Luang Prabang Figured out the Laotian keyboard. We've made to Luang Prabang. A 10 hour bus trip through the mountains of Laos it was one of the best days I've spent travelling. The bus was VIP which doesn't mean much, you just don't have to stand for 10 hours and the bus also has aircon which proved to be more a nightmare as it was overcast and cold outside and I didn't pack a single jumper (I froze my balls off). The amazing part of the journey was travelling through real Laotian towns and seeing real Laotians doing real Laotian things the thing that strikes you first is how similar we all are but yet how different. Everyone has TV even in the most remote village in the mountains there is a satellite out the front ... read more

First of all I apologise for the lacklustre look of the blog entry. I cant work out how to do bold or headings on this Laotian keyboard. Anyway the journey has begun, we got into Vientiane around 2100 lastnight. The flight was fairly uneventful and the food was disgraceful (also the 3hr stopover at Bangkok airport was a bitch). I hopefully load up a few photo's. The first thing to strike you as you get into Wattay airport in Laos is how small it is, seriously Port has a bigger airport (maybe not). We went through customs without any issues. We were wondering wheter to declare Amanda's medication but decided to just walk through no one said a word. We split a cab into town with an Aussie guy and were asleep not long after we ... read more
