Sickness

Singapore/Kuala Lumpur 26th of January

We had only three things planned for our last day in Singapore, buy a laptop for Amanda, eat at Mos burger and send some of our souvineers home we completed all three.... just. We started by posting 2Kg's worth of our/my collected souvineers mainly beer shirts and buddha statues for my buddha room, it cost about $35 Aud and will probably beat us home.

Next stop was the Funan Tech centre well known as the best and cheapest shopping centre in Sing, I could have quite easily maxed out my credit card here getting my geek on. We researched for an hour or so deciding on the Samsung notebook NF 210, it has a dual processor, 250Gb HDD and 2Gb Ram a free external DVD-RW (and Amanda likes the colour) for about $500 Aud. The catch with the DVD-RW was we had to pick it up from SIM LIM Square, we had about an hour and a half before we had to be in a cab to the airport but we thought we could make it and pick up a couple of burgers on the way the only thing we didn't factor in was

our ability to get major lost at the worst possible time so after picking up our crap DVD-RW player we had an hour to pick up our bags from the hotel and get to the airport. Being the fattys we are we still thought we could factor a couple of burgers into the equation so while I lined up in the huge taxi queue (it was raining and 1600 creating bedlam in Sing) while Amanda grabbed us a couple of burgers, unbelievably the burgers took longer then the line, so by the time Amanda got back I was letting people through. It was quite fourtuitous as the cabbie we got to the airport via our hotel was not only going there himself but was an amateur tour guide, telling us all sorts of interesting facts which I can't remember. We got to the airport bang on time and even had a couple of minutes to try the Mos burger, it was basically a cheese burger with Marinara sauce and the spicy Mos burger was the same with a couple of jalepenos (creative) the tasted pretty good. We checked in and wandered around Changi airport, I think this has got to

be the best airport we've been to, there is free Wi-Fi through out which should have worked with Amanda's new laptop (I couldn't nerd it to work), chair beds we couldn't find a double though and because its Chinese new year soon heaps of free Chinese crap and even a performing dragon, not to mention a golf buggy/post office giving out more free crap, I love Singapore Airport.

I felt sorry for Kuala Lumpur airport it had no chance of living up to Sing, although the train we caught to town was excellent, express the whole way and clean unlike the Sydney trains slow, stinky, expensive and more often then not the hamster dies that was spinning the wheel to power the train and you have to wait for a new hamster. We got to our hotel without to many issues and the cab we got had been upgraded with a new boot locking system that we will have to install on our car when we get home. The hotel is really nice and only a 500m walk to the Petronas towers (if we bomb the building next to us we could see it out our window). Sleep

Kuala

Lumpur 27th of January

I was really keen to get up and explore this morning although my body betrayed me as I woke up at 0930. We belatedly hit the road at 1000 and within 100 metres had come across one of the major hurdles in KL, they dont give a shit about peadestrians, if you don't drive a car you deserve to be run over. So we walked straight into a worksite (building more road onto the footpath) and got our shoes tared which made the rest of the day very interesting as the rocks stuck to our thongs meant we effectively skated everywhere we went. Why not change shoes, brings me to my next problem with KL, we haven't found any laundry's our laundromats, you can either get your clothes washed at the hotel (cheaper to buy new clothes) or get them washed at a dry cleaners $36Aud for the massive pile we had, we bit the bullet and got them done at the dry cleaners as we were both wearing our dregs, (I didn't have any clean shorts so I just wore undies) this also meant we had no socks to wear with our shoes. Apart from these two issues KL seems really nice. We went into China town strolled through the markets (I almost bought some more beer shirts) grabbed some luke warm Nasi Kandar basically a buffet of nice curries (avoiding the chicken) and headed back to our hotel for a couple of beers and dinner at a German Restraunt, we ordered a plate full of sausages and almost finished it which is pretty embarassing once you see the photo's (for some reason I can't load them on Amanda's laptop, I will keep trying)

Synoposis of our trip to SE Asia

Of all the places we have visited, I think we like Laos the most it was exactly what we like in a travel destination the people are so friendly, there are less tourists, plenty of sites and the Laotian culture is amazing not to mention the best beer in Asia Beer Lao. We will definitly come back and hope it doesn't change to much

Cambodia on the whole was a fantastic trip. We really liked Siem Reap not only because of Angkor Wat, the people in Siem Reap are relaxed and the size of the city itself makes everything easy to access. Phnom Penh was worth the trip just for the Killing fields and genocide museum but the food poisoning and the prostitutes/drug dealers on the corner of our street makes me think I will not be coming back to PP soon.

Singapore was the real suprise package of our trip, all we had heard was that is was clean, boring city. I disagree entirely Singapore has a lot of attractions admittedly man made attractions but interesting ones none the less. The food and culture are also far from boring, Singapore is what you want it to be you can spend thousands and eat at high class restraunts and stay at Raffles or you can spend hundreds (it's not that cheap) staying at YHA's and eating at hawker centres and not drinking beer. We will definitly come back to Sing.

I think KL was a bit of an unknown for both me and Amanda and so far we really like it. It is similar to Sing in some areas (choose your own style) but half to a third of the price. The shopping in KL is also excellent. If we had of come here first we would have been broke the rest of the trip as it is I've definitly filled up the room we made by sending the souvineers back to Aus and were going to be scared at the airport way in. The food is our kind of food lots of curries and beers is $3 a can. I think next time we will spend time travelling through Malaysia to try to get a bit more of a feel for the people and the culture and vist Johor Bahru again.

The trip has been amazing and I've really enjoyed writing the blog, it gives you a great perspective and also lets you vent were necessary (notice no mention of Batam, I'm well over it). We fly out tomorrow at 2140 and get back to Port at
1750 the following day (not looking forward to that trip). Can't wait to see everyone. I need to go to the toilet
