The final week of my stay in London became more and more frenetic as the day of Ive’s wedding drew closer. The pace sped up and tempers shortened, but such is life. On Tuesday Uje, Ubani and myself set off to Woolwich town centre with a list of items needed to the wedding. Given that London is not big on shopping malls, we assumed that there would be a high street of some sort. Having trouble finding the place we asked for directions and were greeted with confused expressions and shrugging of shoulders. Note to self - Woolwich Town Centre is not the best for a shopping spree. The evening was more fruitful as Uje & I met up with a NZ friend at London Bridge. We learned very important lessons about London public transport that ... read more

Today I saw Liverpool through the eyes as a tourist and a former resident with the help of Aunty Brenda. Being Palm Sunday, Aunty Brenda & I attended a service at the Liverpool Cathedral this morning. It's absolutely enormous - the largest in Europe. They started construction in 1901 and it was officially opened in 1978. Good things take time? We had lunch in the Refectory (some storage area of the cathedral I think) and was joined by a lively gentleman who gave us a historical account of church and his uncle's involvement in the music. After lunch we drove around the area, and I saw the very spot on Hope Lane where mum stood with Hugh (then a chubby pink baby) on her graduation day. Granted, it has changed much over 15 years. I arrived in London on Monday 3rd April and right now I'm in Liverpool for the weekend. It's been interesting so far! My "home base" is in Thamesmead South East London. It's a suburban area full of identical semi-detached brick homes right by the famous River Thames. I'm staying here with some family friends who are getting hitched next weekend. It's not the most exciting area, but one can easily escape the drudgery and head into London city by Buses, Trains & Subways. Ooh, I'm having so much fun with the public transport system here. I'm sure to many my fascination is a bit puzzling, but if you live in Auckland, you'll be feeling me right now. On Wednesday morning I decided to take a short little adventure to the local shopping centre whilst awaiting the ... read more

On Friday I visited the Empire State Building, Empire State Building Skyride, Madison Square Gardens and Madame Tussauds NY. I was determined to get my money's worth for the NY Pass. My goodness did my legs pay for it! At the Empire State Building you can opt to get a recorded audio presentation whilst at the observation deck. It was great! There were different numbered posts on the oberservation deck and the voice on the radio explained all the history behind landmarks in that area. Although Empire State Building isn't the tallest in NY, it's very impressive for something that was built in the 1930's! The Skyride was like virtual tour of NY. It's a ride similar to the Motion Master at Rainbows End. Madison Square Gardens and Madame Tussauds was fun times! I made lots ... read more

Today I made big plans to visit the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim Museum of Art, and the Apollo Theatre. I thought that I'd have enough energy and determination..... In reality I made I spent 3 hours at the Museum of Natural history and didn't cover one quarter and was already feeling tired. Hmm... It's a very interesting place though! I spent much of my time exploring the exhibitions on the different people groups - Africans, Asians, Native Americans & Pacific Peoples. That was definitely my kind of fun. I was impressed with Pacific Peoples exhibitions, considering it was an American museum. After staggering out the museum all bleary-eyed I caught my tour bus to Harlem to the Apollo Theatre. Harlem was originally a Dutch settlement, and pre 1920 ... read more

I'm staying with my good friend Valerie in Hoboken, New Jersey. I haven't spent much time here so I can't really comment.... Aren't the Sopranos supposed to be set in New Jersey? Valerie left for work at an unmentionable hour this morning (ok, it was like 8.15am) so I was left to make my way to Manhatten and do some exploration! Whilst my dear friend instructed me on how to catch a bus, the moment I stepped out of the house I headed in the opposite direction. I eventually managed to make it to the train station not so far away and thus began my downtown NY expedition. First stop was Ground Zero - site of the World Trade Center. It looked like unfinished business. The whole area is fenced off, and there is construction machinery ... read more

On Sunday night I travelled back to Baltimore by bus. As my dear friend Abena put it, I had my first Greyhound experience. For a 4 hours bus ride it felt rather short! I was sceptical how good the ride would be given the threats made by the bus driver to throw anyone off the bus if he heard any beeping pagers or cell phones.... Ahh, the hospitality of America. Why back to Baltimore? I'm struggling to find an answer myself.... the main reason was for more shopping and more time spent with my uncle & Abena. I was able to catch a small glimpse of Inner Harbour although it was at night, and a Monday for that matter. What I did see was nice - art deco. We had desert at a restaurant called "The ... read more

Woah I've already spent 5 days in New York and I've seen so much. It feels like some mad crazy blur! I arrived at Long Island airport from Baltimore on Wednesday after an long exhausting....50 minute flight! It was fabulous - the plane took off and we had just enough time to use the bathroom before the seatbelt sign came on again and we prepared for landing. My cousin Chioma picked me up from the airport and I was wizzed into the fast paced life of New York. I'm still trying to get used to it. I was taken to my cousin's school where she pointed out her old dorm rooms and lecture halls. From there we scoured Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City, Long Island. It was a nice place, and I did get one very ... read more

North America March 21st 2006

Today I did my first little solo expedition to Eastern Baltimore. With the aid of my uncle, I purchased an all-day transport pass and set off to The Great Blacks in Wax Museum. It’s in a real random place - the corner of a street among throngs of abandoned dilapidated buildings. It’s a Madame Tussauds-like museum on the history and heritage of African American people. I’ve heard a lot of the history before, but seeing the life-sized wax figures made the realities so stark. The first part of the museum was a tour through a replica slave ship. The conditions that people lived and died in were absolutely diabolical. These people that suffered could have been the brothers, sisters & cousins of my great great great grandparents. Really brings it home. The next parts of the ... read more

North America » United States » Missouri » Kansas City March 20th 2006

I spent the weekend in the Midwest - Kansas & St Joseph, Missouri with some family friends / distant in-laws. My welcome into the city was somewhat unorthodox. My suitcase missed the flight (although I managed to make it on time...). So on my first night I all I had were my clothes on my back, my trusty camera & wallet. Chi-chi kindly took me to Walmart so I could by some underwear, and preserve some sort of dignity. Praise God the suitcase turned up on Saturday arvo... missing some handles. Aunty Ngozi & Uncle Immanuel made sure that I felt really comfortable in spite of this odd situation. :o) The weather was really cold, but nothing like a NZ cold though. It felt really crisp and clear. Yesterday it even started to snow a little ... read more
