We are four weeks out from leaving on our trip and the excitement is high. The car is in having new springs installed and the camper trailer is having a new stone guard built. (the old one was just plain annoying!) We have made a definite decision about where we are meeting mum and dad. They are leaving about four days earlier than us. The lucky buggers don't have work commitments so they are flexible with when they can leave! Have decided to meet at Ayr and go from there................... I carried out a really big grocery shop of food for the trip and mum has been cooking madly. Have checked the kids have clothes that fit! (can't keep up with how fast jack is growing), have double checked the first aid kit is stocked and ... read more

The decision to travel up to cape York was made in June 2011 while we were traveling the Birdsville track with my parents, Craig and Marie, my husband Gavin and our children Sylvia, Olivia, jack and Luke. It is a trip that my parents have done before with a tag along tour in 2000 and one that has been a goal of gavs for as long as he can remember. Everyone was excited that the decision had been made and the count down began! The first hurdle to overcome was time off work, I'm lucky I have a government job so that made it a little easier but gav works in the private sector and we were worried that they may not be happy about him taking 17 weeks off work! We were really surprised (and ... read more

The Sunsets out here were just gorgeous. The star displays at night were the most amazing thing I've ever seen. The milky way could be clearly seen - so much more so than in the city. I could have sat and looked at the stars all night! By the end of the trip the kids were able to find the Southern Cross most nights without help from us adults. I am so pleased that we are able to provide them with these experiences. Australia really is a beautiful place!... read more

Lake Eyre can't be described in words. It is so strange to see these gleaming white salt flats suddenly appear in the horizon. I was surprised at how thick the layer of salt was and how it got onto our skin, clothes and everything. It must have been very disheartening for the early explorers to have come across this Lake only to find it was full of salt!! When we first got to the water Jack just kept on going! Gavin had to run after him to get him to come back. Jack said he was just going to find the deep part!! We had to explain that there are no deep parts around here!!... read more

The kids spied this lizard as we were packing up. It was amazing that they found it because it really blended in with the rocks it was hiding amongst. We were constantly surprised by the amount of wildlife out on the track. It is such an isolated area. They were so excited!! Had a hold and then set him free back in the desert. ... read more

Started this blog early to become familiar with this site and to count down the days! First travelled with my family (husband and four kids) and mum and dad in June 2011. We spent two weeks travelling the Birdsville Track and the Strezlecki Track. Had an absolute ball and the decision was made to definitely travel together to Cape York in June 2012. ... read more
