Did the Telegraph Track and we are now at Seisia. The track was awesome and some of the best (and most challenging) 4wding we have ever done! The track begins atBramwell Junction and about 4ks into it you came to the first crossing, Palm Creek. Palm Creek isn't deep but the entry and exits are abit tricky. The entry had a large step down and a boggy mud hole at the bottom. When we arrived there a car was stuck trying to exit. These blokes had been pig shooting and had been stuck there since 12am the night before. They had tried to winch themselves out but their winch had snapped. Gav used our car and winch to help them out. I might just point out that their car was a Toyota - no wonder they ... read more

We stayed 5 nights at Weipa. What a great place it is! The weather has been gorgeous, the locals friendly and the fishing fantastic. Gav, Dad, Luke and Jack have been fishing everyday from a jetty not far from where we are camping. Gav has caught a large tarpin (threw it back, they aren't good eating, too many bones), Luke two grat trevallies and Jack a large trevally. The boys have caught enough fish for dinner, so Saturday night we cooked up a big feed of crumbed fish and chips. We took the kids for a tour of the Bauxite mine. The boys really loved seeing the big trucks, Luke is now determined to drive one! Weipa was great, wish us luck as we set off up the telegraph track!............. read more

Today we drove from Coen to Chilli Beach (approx 200ks). On the way we pulled in to the Archer River Roadhouse and just like Musgrave it is an oasis at the end of a long dusty track. They have great camping facilities with hot showers and a takeaway store with the usual offerings. The showers and toilets are clean and the camping area is nice and grassy. We had a cup of coffee and an ice cream and headed out to Chilli Beach. We weren't sure about coming out to Chilli Beach as everything we had read said the track out here was rough and it was difficult to get to but worth the effort. The road out here was anything but difficult, the deepest river crossing hardly came over the top of the tyres and ... read more

We said goodbye to Elim after a relaxing 3 days and headed towards Battle Camp Road.Along the way we stopped off at Isabella Falls for morning tea when a cyclist pulled in. We recognized her as the cyclist we had seen in at Cook Town four days ago. When we got chatting to her we thought her story was pretty amazing. This girl was originally from The Netherlands (Appldorp). She had been cycling for the past five years. She had cycled through Europe, The Uk, The Philippines and now Australia. Her bike weighed a tonne! (not literally). None of us could believe her drive to keep riding this incredibly heavy bike all over the place. We all thought "gee while we have been relaxing on the beach for three days, she's been riding just to get ... read more

Ahhh Elim Beach. What can I say. I had read a little about this spot and mentioned to Gav that if we had time it might be worth a stop over. They do mention it in the books about Cape York but it's always just in passing so I wasn't set on definitely coming here. Gavin had asked other travellers about it and one bloke told him "yep, great spot. you will find an aboriginal man named Eddie just sitting on his verandah. Speak to him." We thought it sounded interesting We were at Cook Town and just thought "why not". As we were coming out here we were beginning to wonder just where is this elusive Elim Beach? The track just seemed to keep going and there were no signs to be seen. I was ... read more

We are staying at Wonga Beach which is just north of Mossman. What a lovely spot. The weather hasn't been too crash hot - a little overcast but no rain, thank god! The kids have been to the beach and swimming in the pool. They have a great pool for the Kids here, complete with a spa and slippery slide. We have been out to see Mossman Gorge. It is just beautiful but a little too commercialised and touristy for our liking. I preferred Granite Gorge because you could get right down into the gorge and walk through it, as well as swim, and there were no tourists. Even though, Mossman Gorge is well worth a look at and we really enjoyed the experience. The kids didn't swim in the gorge because the water is positively ... read more

We left Cobbold Gorge and headed north west to the Undara Lava tubes. It never ceases to amaze us that we run into so many road works even here away from the city! We arrived at Georgetown and stopped for lunch and a few supplies. The lava tubes was a great camp spot. The amenities were excellent and we camped side by side and enjoyed a great fire at night. It is quite cold at night and the wind had picked up so we were glad of some extra warmth. We had an owl staying in the tree right outside the tent and the kids loved watching him during the day and at night he took off right over Gavins head! We also had a visit from a little Batong (a small pottaroo) on the first ... read more

Finally, on the 24th of June our trip began. Day 1 was a big drive and we drove in rain the entire time. We stopped at a free camp site at Marlborough, just north of Rockhampton. We arrived at approx 6pm and set up in the rain. (not fun!). Thankfully it was an overnight stop so the set up was basic and quick, with the kids having noodles for dinner. We were joined through the night be two other vans and even though there was a lot of trucks passing during the night, we slept soundly. Day 2 we continued the trip north, stopping off at the big mango at Bowen and driving through to Ayr to meet up with mum and dad. (just a reminder for our overseas relatives that I will refer to Sylvia ... read more

Travelling up to Cape York June to October 2012. Gav, Jude and Olivia (8yrs), jack (6 yrs), Luke (5yrs), Sylvia Mariette (Jude's mum) and Craig (Jude's dad). Gav and Jude are driving a Nissan patrol (Mups) and towing a Trak Shak camper trailer. Mum and Dad are driving a Pajero (stumpy) and towing a pioneer camper trailer. Throughout this blog I will refer to Craig and Sylvia Mariette as mum and dad. We have two weeks to go (exactly 16 sleeps, 7 working days for me, 10 working days for Gav) but who's counting!! God it's hard to stay focused on what needs to be done at work. We are busy catching up with good friends and finishing off the last minute things that need to be done at home and to the car and trailer. ... read more
