Yup, the whole Rose Parade tradition dates back to before I was born (a long time!). btw - Sherm probably mentioned that the Huntington Library rose garden is what the TV show "Bones" shows to represent the "Jeffersonian" in Washington, DC
. They sometimes show the Washington Monument in the background, but it's always in bloom - no fall or winter!

Hi -- As always, very enjoyable reading about your travels. I will have to add the Huntington to my list. Who knew people spent the night on the sidewalk to watch a parade???? Enjoy, and Happy New Year!

Dragon fruit!!!!!

It is dragon fruit or pitaya in Spanish. :-) It is delicious as a fresh fruit drink with a little bit of lime.

About the wild chickens - we played a municipal golf course on kauai and my job was to lure the chickens away from the tee boxes with corn sold in the pro shop. Smart chickens - no corn, no tee off! Beautiful views at that course but rott
en greens. Kukuiolono, I think was the name. Must mean "smart chicken" in Hawaiian.

I traveled this road in the late 70's in a rental car driven by a 75+ year old man. His wife, same vintage, just kept saying "careful, careful " for the whole trip. We got back to the resort in one piece! I thought those things on the road
were hedge apples but guavas sounds more likely. Don't take this the wrong way but I am never going on a vacation with you. LOL

glass-less, but with beer and the hat, things could have been worse!! Sounds like the perfect trip.....(well, except for the Close Encounter).......two weeks at the beach in the tropics....I could use that right about now!

The windward sides of the islands (east) plus the north and south shores (where the currents go around or between the islands) are where one usually finds rougher surf. Barrier reefs can help. Enjoy watching the waves - and be careful.

Great adventures! We saw an octopus snorkeling off Ka'anapali but haven't seen ones since. We were above him when we saw him,and he saw us. He looked us over with his eye, then ZOOM - he disappeared. We've stayed twice at Napili Bay -
once at Napili Kai at the north end (their Sea House Restaurant is good) and once at Napili Surf at the south end. Snorkeling there is okay but better to walk to Kapalua Bay to the north. :)
