My first impression of the photo of the rambutan was that it was the hemi-penises of rattlesnakes. They look very similar. Microscopic images of viruses also look similar. What you actually got was probably a bit different in size and fl
avor. :)

We are back from our vacation. I never got to do a blog which I already regret, reading yours, and will do so more as time goes by. I'm eagerly reading about your trip. See you at the BLIC meeting. Eve

I knew how to say it but looked it up in my Spanish dictionary anyway. Not quite that self-confident!

Is the fruit rambutan?
18th October 2015

Robin, you are correct!! I looked up your word on Google and that is what it is! I am bringing you a small bag of Costan Rican cocoa - from the farmer himself.

Yum! Thanks, Jane. Love your blog - you guys have fun...

It's a good thing you forgot something that you know the word for :)

Wow, I loved Vancouver, so beautiful.

I found the sailing very healing.

Well, Jane, I'm not entirely sure how the flow works at Boat Pass. I know with the tides going in and out, there are currents flowing between the islands at some times, and not so much at others. That's why we had to study the current cha
rts every day to figure out when we could go the direction we wanted. Presumably there is a time (or two) each day when the flow through Boat Pass stops, the reverses and flows the other way. I think boats have to hit that slack water time just right to go through there! -- John

I thought it was "keeling"! This sailor talk is all over my head...

Glad you had a good adventure -- I'm looking forward to hearing about the next one (I'm always up for armchair adventures!!!). ;)

Cool sign!
19th September 2015

Heeling (when the boat is "tilted" due to the wind in the sails) can get some getting used to - especially when the railing is under water - but is a main means of propulsion. The ballast in the hull and the keel help to keep the boat bala
nced with maximum forward thrust, but it can feel like the boat is going to tip over. It can really be a trip if one is also going through rough swells. Keeping one's balance and moving around can be tricky. Then, just when your brain is beginning to compensate for this, if you go on land, you can feel "sea legs", and you have to adapt all over again! Now you have a little experience sailing! :)

I love the pics and vid with this entry! The boat at sunset is really beautiful!

That is a very good universal sign. I get the message immediately! Oh, hey -- we saw the movie "A Walk in the Woods" last week. They could have used this sign!

Tilley in plain view! But seriously, I am with Jeff on the claustrophobia issues and I'm thinking of taking a beta blocker just looking at this photo! :-)

Tilley's are the best hats ever! John has 2 of them, one for winter and summer. Never without one!

This reminds me of a place we saw on our cruise up the St. Lawrence seaway! Fascinating waters.

Hiking in wet socks is the pits. Always.

My brother John and I are very similar. We walk slowly, but we are pretty much unstoppable! You did GREAT, bro!

super cute, is right! And colorful.

It sure seemed like 5 quarts! Maybe you ended up with 5 pints, but I'll bet you ate all the rest. hahaha

Ohhh....see, big brother is still teaching me interesting stuff. At least sailing went more smoothly than when you (tried) to teach me to drive!
