Had my best sleep yet last night - first time I've actually slept right through. My allergies seem to have gone too, which is amazing and such a relief - was really getting to me. Must be allergic to some of the greenery down south. Hopefully not palm trees since hope to be around some a fair bit later in the trip. Got up okay and got to an ATM. felt horrible giving over the RS10000 (£131) local fees. Not really sure they are that necessary or where the money goes considering we have already paid £800 for the trip! Met the German and Australian girls but can't remember/didn't catch their names - will need to work on that - very bad at names indeed. Caught a local bus for a bumpy ride to a mosque ... read more

Had a great sleep last night and it was so good to be able to wake up naturally and not with an alarm. Had a pleasant morning reading the paper and flicking through the TV before getting showered and packed. Left bags at reception and had a yummy chicken supreme pizza with extra cheese at pizza hut for lunch. Sarah was still a bit wary of food after not feeling well so felt more comfortable having pizza hut as her first proper meal to get over the fear of eating incase it makes her feel ill again. Had a wander along MG Road then returned to the Grand for our cab to the airport. Bumped into Chandra at reception so chatted to him for a bit before setting off for Kochi airport. Can't believe been up since 5.30am! Was not pleasant, just rolled out of bed, into clothes and went. Dozed a bit on the mini bus and really couldn't have managed an Indian breakfast when we stopped - had some cashews and then the Ooty chocolate. The roads were quiet, probably due to it being a public holiday as its Ganhdi's birthday, so arrived at Coimbatore an hour early. Decided to pass time in an internet cafe as it was really hot just sitting outside the travel place. Not much better in the internet cafe but still a little better. Checked bank account somewhat nervously, but was okay. Had been paid which is always good. Wanted to upload more pictures but the computers only had floppy disk drives! Tried to respond to Lindsay's email but the keyboard ... read more

This morning wasn't great as I've been stuffy/itchy/sniffly and it seemed to be at it's worst and I'm fed up with it. Got the toy train to a place (I forget the stop name) where we visited a tea factory to learn 'what is tea?' Wasn't in best of moods but did enjoy it an take few snaps on my phone as we had to pay for camera use but not phone cameras. The guy taking us round started by demanding we answer 'what is tea?' then continued to ask. He was a bit scary, demanding that people get in pictures and that we touch and feel everything - even grabbing Sarah's wrist at one point and making her feel air that was blowing on the tea when she didn't go to do it herself. Was ... read more

Can't believe it's the end of September already! Felt really sick after going to bed last night but managed to fall asleep. Struggled with my scrambled eggs but did better with apple pancake. Sarah and Natalie also feeling a bit ill and Susan has had a cold for a while but seems a bit better. Sarah really not good so had a lie down while Natalie and myself went for a swim. Bit cooler this time since earlier in the day but really nice. Chatted to one of the guys we'd been speaking to in the bar last night - him and his friend were staying in one of the tree houses which look great and must have stunning views. After the swim I packed up and we were back on the mini bus heading up ... read more

Left early on a mini bus and heded for Masinagdi to the Jungle Retreat ( http://www.jungleretreat.com/ ) for some much needed chill out time. The latter part of the drive was the bumpiest ever but the location was well worth it - just stunning! We received a warm welcome from Sarita who gave us a brief briefing and let us get on with relaxing. After checking out the dorm the group are sharing, Sarah, Natalie and myself quickly got changed and went for a late morning/early afternoon swim in the amazing watering hole like pool sunk into the rocks at the foot of the Nilgiri mountains. Just what I needed. Having swum up a nice appetite we enjoyed a tasty lunch of mixed cuisine including spag bol and a lovely spinach bake. We then sat in ... read more

Both woke up as the train entered ours, and the final, station - everyone else was all packed up, beds back to normal, ready to go, nobody thought it might be a good idea to wake us at least a wee bit before. Had to get up, pack up sheet, find bag etc. and go, without really waking up - was not in good mood! Just threw on sunglasses and stumbled along after everyone. Think got auto to hotel - all a bit hazy - and checked in. Had a couple of hours to freshen up, get breakfast etc. so showered, had a coule of crackers, and washed some underwear. Met around 10.30am when we discovered it was Natalie's 31st birthday when Chandra had a cake for her which was really nice. After having some cake ... read more

Early morning bike ride tooday. Was fun being on a bicycle - had a good bell! We visited the Shore Temples and the bas-relief rock carvings known as Arjuna's Penance. We had a very enthusiastic guide which was nice but even for early morning it was just so so hot that by the end everyone was desperate to just get back and laze by the pool. Got nice pics including of the lovely beach. It was really nice to get back and first thing was freshen up and get in the pool. Spent the rest of the day lazing in the sun and cooling off in the pool. Also took my black trousers to be hemmed and had a sleep sheet/sleeping bag made up in a nice soft silk. Sarah had a couple of pairs of ... read more

Up early and out for a walk around the very French Pondicherry. Had breakfast in a french bakery - very tasty almond croissant an an apple danish - yum! Then walked the French quarter visiting Sri Aurobindo Ashram on Rule de la Marine and had some time to sit amongst The Mother's devotees and meditate. The Mother is Mirra Alfassa - a Paris born painter, musician and Aurobindo’s close companion who developed the Ashram and founded Auroville (visited later). Sarah bought a book about The Mother's thoughts on children and I picked up a tiny perfume and some lemongrass in the shop which I'm hoping will reduce my bites - lots around feet and ankles. It was really nice to walk down and see the sea and hear the waves crash against the rocks - but ... read more

Today was really just a traveling day. The train was of course late by 30m but the 5 hour journey passed okay. Were not in an a/c carriage but it was fine. We then had a 1.5 hour journey by car from Villapuram to Pondicherry. The end of the journey really dragged on as we sat in traffic for ages and everyone was extremely relieved to arrive at the hotel. Had an awkward moment in the room where the guy that brought the bags up just stood staring at us while we looked at each other - Chandra had told us that they did all the tipping for us and we had not tipped anyone else. Eventually Sarah just asked him a question then said thanks and ushered him out. This is the one thing I ... read more
