Linan and I got our open water certification in Malawi in 2 1/2 days. It usually takes 4. It was great to get it out of the way because it was a lot cheaper than doing it in the ocean but we spent all of our time at Kande Beach getting through everything. After leaving, we spent one night in Chipata (spelling?) before heading into Tanzania. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with Malawi. It didn't really live up to its reputation of being the "warm heart of Africa." I guess it's all circumstantial but, for me, the Tanzanians have been much more welcoming. Tanzania had a hefty and unexpected $100 visa fee (the US state department's website says it's $50). We had two consecutive days of over 10 hours of driving. In between, we stayed at ... read more

Well it's been a while since the last post. We've been busy and the internet cafes have become hard to come by. After Vic Falls, we crossed into Zambia and paid a hefty $135 visa fee for Americans. Zimbabwe was nice but the situation there is pretty awful. It is illegal for foreigners to use the local money so we got ripped off for everything ($10 for a small dinner). Our first stop in Zambia was Livingstone where we met our tourmates for the second half of the tour. All that was left from the first half was me, Erika from Vancouver, Nicole from LA, Steve from San Diego, Nichola from England, Nadine from Mexico, and Hubert from the Netherlands. We didn't really see much of Zambia. We spent two consecutive very long days of driving, ... read more

Well it's been a while since my last post. We've been deep in what we call "the real Africa" where there isn't even electricity, much less internet access. All of my tourmates and I have agreed that this is what we expected out of Africa. After Windhoek we stayed at an amazing campsite just inside Botswana. We played volleyball for hours and partied with a few other tours. We then went to the Okovango Delta and it was amazing. We froze to death during a 2 hour ride on the back of a truck. It was cool though as we saw tons of animals and waving kids. Then we had a 1 hour ride on a mokoro, which is a boat made out of a tree trunk. You just sit there and a poler propells and ... read more

We left adventure packed Swakopmund a couple days ago and it was awesome. Originally I wanted to do the sandboarding but the idea of walking up the dunes after every ride down wasn't too appealing for most of the group. So most of us opted for the quadbiking and it was amazing! We did a 2 hour run through the Namib desert (oldest desert in the world). The endless dunes and Atlantic coast made for amazing scenery. Some of the group went skydiving and I was really tempted to join them but I decided to save the money (already did it in Jersey anyway). After Swakopmund, we stayed in a place called Spitzkoppe. I loosely use the word "place" here because it was just a bush camp literally in the middle of nowhere. We ended up ... read more

The overland trip is underway and it is great so far. The truck is huge and definitely well equipped for African overlanding. The people are amazing and we're having loads of fun both in the truck (very long drives) and at the campsites. There are 4 Americans including me, a couple Canadians, a couple Brits, a couple Kiwis, and the rest are all German and Dutch. Socially, the group tends to split between the English speaking portion and the German/Dutch portion, but we all get along for the most part. We met on June 29 in Cape Town and the truck's battery died literally the first time we got on it. We had to all get out and push. But they sorted it out and there have been no problems since. Our first stop was a ... read more

On Wednesday, I rented a car with Heather and Jaron and we drove down to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point. I thought the drive fell far short of its reputation as being one of the best in the world. However, Chapman's Peak was closed due to maintenance so maybe that's where all the scenery is. Nevertheless it was another day of perfect weather and still a great drive. We first stopped in Boulders Beach which is allegedly the only place in the world where you can swim with penguins. The water was ridiculously cold but I probably wouldn't have done it anyway. There really are penguins everywhere though. A few miles up the road there were baboons crossing the road so we stopped for some pictures. They're pretty nasty and will literally run ... read more

Yes, I've officially had no cash for most of the day. Despite my bank assuring me they would not deactivate my card, they did. It was rough trying to use a payphone to call the toll free number. Payphones in these neck of the woods have to be charged. So you have to hope no one has used it recently, and then hope it doesn't run out of juice while you're fiddling through Visa's automated service. But I eventually succeeded and they said it would be straightened out within the hour. Let's hope so. Luckily, Heather and Jaron, my new Canadian friends, have been incredibly helpful and generous by paying for me all day. I felt like a little kid asking Heather if I could buy a water. So we woke up early and went to ... read more

I'm here. Finally. It was a long 2 days of sleeping in 45 minute intervals. I've already hit 3 continents and by that rate, I'll be home by the end of the week. I guess I better slow down. I watched the Netherlands/Russia match in Newark with a bunch of awesome Europeans. I got into Frankfurt city around 7 am I think. It was a Sunday so there was absolutely nothing to do. It was perfect weather though so I just strolled around and took a nap near the river, then took another in a park. It actually worked out well to help me catch up to my new time zone. Got into Cape Town at 5:00 this morning. It is winter and all the South Africans were bundled up but I was quite comfortable in ... read more

I think the last time I was this excited was in the weeks leading up to my first trip to Europe; the trip which was ultimately a huge precursor to my impending round-the-world trip. Because I've been dreaming about doing a trip like this for so long, nowadays it's tough to absorb the reality of it. I try to make light of and relish such a high amount of anticipation but at the end of the day, the lack of patience wins and I would give anything to time travel to June 21. My things-to-do list is coming along. It feels good to get the boring stuff out of the way, but there's also an irrational alarming feeling that comes with dropping thousands of dollars and it not even getting me out of the house yet. ... read more
