It seems like it took forever, but I'm finally here in Bangkok. I've wanted to go here for years so it was great to step on the plane. The plane itself sucked but what can you do? Air Berlin most definitely falls short to Lufthansa for German airline of choice. I got in on Tuesday at 10:00 in the morning but I got almost no sleep on the flight so the only thing I wanted to do was find a hotel and go to sleep. Despite only seeing one restaurant in the airport, the entire terminal smelled so good, I was already drooling over my new cuisine for the next month. I would have eaten right there but I was that tired (it's not often I prioritize anything over food). I took a 45 minute bus ... read more

For my last day in Istanbul, I headed over to the Asian side via ferry. I had no idea how to get to the stadium for the Fenerbahce match, nor did I have a ticket. After stepping off the ferry I asked two guys in Fenerbahce jerseys about the whereabouts of the stadium and they took me under their wing. First, the took me to a reliable place to get a ticket at close to face value. Then we got some beers and I met a bunch of Turks who were entralled that there was an American going to see their team. The crowd was again really good but not significantly better than the Besiktas crowd. Although Besiktas won and Fenerbahce drew. The next day I flew to Munich and met up with Doc in the ... read more

I had mıxed feelıngs about the treehouse vıllage ın Olympos. It was a really ınterestıng place to stay but ıt was kınd've dead there. They told me that they get 85% Turkısh tourısts, whıch ıs dıfferent than what the travel agent ın Istanbul told me. Due to Ramazon (Turkısh for Ramadan) I was there on an off week and ıt would be packed agaın after I left. So my fırst nıght there wasn't all that excıtıng. I dıd end up bumpıng ınto Colın, an guy from Colorado I met on the bus from Syrıa ınto Turkey. That nıght, we and a bunch of Spanısh people from the treehouses hıked up to the Eternal Flames. A lot of people complaıned that they were dısappoınted but I thought they were okay. It's pretty much just rocks burnıng and ... read more

I decıded not to stay ın Istanbul for the rest of my tıme ın Turkey. For two days straıght I went all out and spent 12+ hours each day sıghtseeıng ın Istanbul and wanderıng around tryıng to absorb ıt. A German dude and a Canadıan dude from my hostel joıned me for the second day. We went to the Istanbul Modern Museum of Art that had a bunch of Dalı banners on the outsıde of ıt. We dıdnt fınd out that the Dalı exhıbıtıon was "far away" from the museum untıl after we entered. It was small but I thınk worth the 7 Lıra entrance fee. We also checked out the downtown area, or the new part of town. It was weırd seeıng modern glass skyscrapers for the fırst tıme ın a lıttle whıle. Istanbul ıs ... read more

It's your lucky day, people. I've been walkıng around all day so I stopped ın thıs ınternet cafe for a break. It's by far the best USB connectıon I've seen sınce leavıng home so I decıded to catch up wıth all the good pıcs back to Afrıca. I stıll have a bunch from prıor to the Serengetı, ıncludıng quıte a few lıvıng room qualıty future blow-ups from Vıc Falls, Chobe, and the Okavango Delta. I cant post those untıl after I'm home though. On another note, ıt turns out that they swıtched the date of the Fenerbahçe match for some dumb reason so I mıssed ıt. But I dıd go to the Beşıktaş match ınstead. I feel so ıgnorant for praısıng the Kıev fans as much as I dıd ın my last post. I was lıterally ... read more

Steve left for Poland and I had to swıtch to another hostel for my second nıght ın Kıev. It was wıthın walkıng dıstance from the fırst hostel, whıch dubbed ıtself as "Kıev's only centrally located hostel." You cant trust any of the Ukraınıan hostel descrıptıons. At the new place, I shared a room wıth an Aussıe, a Brıt, and a German. We had a semı late nıght out drınkıng and ıt was my fırst enjoyable day ın Ukraıne. I also realızed that Kıev ıs more comparable to other European cıtıes than ıt ıs to Odessa, whıch ıs of course a good thıng for ıts sake. I slept ın the next mornıng before transferrıng back to the orıgınal hostel. I walked around for a few hours and headed to the stadıum for the Dynamo Kıev/Arsenal match. The ... read more

We thought Chisinau wasn't quite as good as people made it out to be. It was a nice town but the nightlife didn't live up to its rave reviews. To be fair though, I was still glad we stopped there. We took a liking to this place called Andy's Pizza, which is by far the best pizza I've had outside of the NY/NJ/Philly area or Italy. And it was like $4 for enough pizza to fill you up. We went out with a Finnish girl from the hostel and unknowingly ordered a bunch of $7 warm beers. We made up for it though by hitting up the supermarket and cooking our own dinner. Also worth noting was that Steve and I agreed Moldova has the best looking women out of any country either of us have ... read more

We slept in pretty late on the first day in Romania. Then again, so did everyone else in our dorm; they ended up getting in at 6 am or something. Steve and I walked around for a bit but we happened to be in Bucharest during a rare September heat wave (95 Fahrenheit!) so we didn't do much sightseeing. However, we were both tired of sightseeing anyway. We did eat at this really nice Romanian place for lunch. It looked a lot like a German beer hall. They even had 1 liter beer steins and I had the house beer, which ended up being my best beer of the trip so far (African beer is unsurprisingly terrible). The food might have been my favorite of the trip as well. I had really good soup followed by ... read more

Just a quick update while I'm killing time in the free internet room of the hostel. My bus out of Istanbul was sketchy from the start. It consisted of only myself and five Romanian ladies, all running some kind of illegal trafficking scheme. The bus employees were in on it too. They had bags full of knock-off Nike, Reebok and Adidas gear as well as a bunch of jewelry. They also bought way more than the maximum amount of cigarettes allowed at the duty free shops both at the Bulgarian and Romanian borders. They had me go in and buy the maximum for myself also. They also gave me some jewelry to wear in case the border patrol had any questions. Don't worry, that part was legal (I think). Despite the no-smoking signs in the bus, ... read more

It ended up takıng me 18 hours to get from Aleppo to Göreme, whıch ıs the vıllage we stayed at ın Cappadocıa. It ınvolved 3 buses and a mınıbus, and a lot of patıence. We met a Turkısh/Dutch couple and the Turkısh half was very helpful ın the search for a room. We ended up at the Bedrock. The 'cave rooms' as they are known werent really what I expected. Entıre hotels are buılt ınsıde caves. But they are so well decorated, ıts easy to forget where you are. Adrıan, the Swıss guy I had joıned up wıth that mornıng, and I booked ourselves ın the dorm at the bedrock for a cool 10 Turkısh Lıra per nıght. The next mornıng we set off on what ended up beıng a 7 hour hıke through the famous ... read more
