All righty! So, I've arrived in Austria - yet again - and, yet again, it is absolutely delightful. Before I get into everything, funny story for you: The original plan that we had for when I got off the train was that Gerald's mother, Lea, would stand at the end of the platform with a sign saying "Karin und Gerald" so that I would know it was her. So, when I got off the train, I looked for said sign. At the end of the platform, I saw a woman standing with a sign that said "Jessica W." This woman looked a BIT young to be Gerald's mother, but the sign clearly had my name on it, so I wasn't questioning this. So, I greet the woman appropriately and she's looking at me in a strange ... read more

Oh goodness... okay... so when I last wrote so many days ago, I was ready to TAKE ON THE WORLLLLD mwahaha! Well, sort of. Internally, I was really just ready to go to Baden and settle down and start life up again. But, every time that I took this trip into consideration, I would just kind of skip over the month of August in my mind. Think of what I had in store for August: 2 weeks of traveling solo - which I've been known to do... but it's exhausting; then, 2 weeks of going into a weak community, sleeping on a floor and trying to educate the Portugese about the rest of the world; this, then, followed by another week of solo travel. All of this, in addition to a final paper for Geneva and ... read more

Wednesday was our last day of anything productive as Thursday should consist only of a museum visit and a dinner with some of the UN delegates (despite publishing on Thursday, I’m writing this on Wednesday). While there are certainly some aspects of this chunk of life that I will miss - ie the lake, Old Town, knowing for certain that I’ll have people to eat with, and even the UN cafeteria! - I can honestly say that I feel as though I’ve done everything there is to do here and it is time to move on. Geneva has treated me really well. In one particular sense, it’s made me put some serious thought into what possibilities there are along the lines of careers. Granted, I keep reminding myself that I am only 21 years old and ... read more

Lesson of the month: Do not make assumptions about your own intelligence with regards to technology... just read the friggin' manual. I had all of these lovely photos of me and my new friends all around Geneva and pretending to be UN diplomats (no shocker here: I was one of the US delegates meaning I got to be an outspoken jerk for 3 hours... and be the center of attention... mwahaha), etc. etc. and instead of properly uploading them, I simply deleted them. This is not cool. However, I did manage to salvage a handful -- these in particular are near and dear to me because they are what put me into the actual traveling spirit. On Saturday, see, we had a complete day off so a few of us took to wandering "Old Town" Geneva. ... read more

Last weekend, I made a trip up to Baden to visit my host family and to begin my moving process for the year to come. I took an overnight train without a bed reservation... so I got the glorious opportunity to experience an 8+ hour train ride, cuddling with some perfect strangers on awkward "pull-down" seats that turn the compartment into one queen-sized bed for all to share. Despite the sleepless night, however, I had a WONDERFUL time in Baden. Karin and Gerald greeted me at the train tracks and escorted me to their teeny little ladybug car. Somehow all of my bags fit in the back... I was impressed. Immediately, though, they decided that it seemed appropriate to take me to a Starbucks - and they found themselves quite funny for doing so :) By ... read more

Hey There, So, eventually these posts will slow down and I will not be overwhelming anymore inboxes every two days with meticulous updates... but there have been a lot of questions as to what it is, exactly, that I am doing here in Geneva. Basically, it's like this: My school has a short-term study-abroad-like program called a "Dialogue of Civilizations" wherein a class (aka 20 some-odd students) are accompanied by a professor with the intent to use that country (or some element of it) as the classroom. Therefore, my class is IAFU938 - Globalization and Social Science as well as POLU938 - which I believe to be International Conflict Negotiation or something along those lines. Essentially, we are using the United Nations as our classroom. So, a typical schedule, these days, looks like this: 7:30am - ... read more

All right, so hopefully everyone's already aware that I am safely in Switzerland. Now, I am sitting in the UN Library with a bit of free time, so some classmates and I are here checking email, blogging and... well... facebooking, of course, for free! Bear with me through this entry as I am still getting used to the keyboard. I'm getting better! But, for example, that would have been-- Iàm getting better++ So zou see what I mean__ hahaha$$ Anyway, the flight over went ALMOST without any hitches. I am apparently simply not having great luck on this leg of the trip because, of course, they lost one of my bags during the transfer. Fortunately, however, they were able to deliver my bag back to me last night already... so no problems, there! Besides, flying into ... read more

So, you know what they say about all the best set plans... okay, I don't know what they say about all the best set plans, but I've come to understand that there is some sort of glitch in every single big trip that I plan - and I'm hoping that this was it. Yesterday, I was released from a 3-day, 2-night stay at the hospital... my diagnosis isn't worth posting here, but obviously it wasn't what you'd call a good time. Not to mention, yes, it did mean a delay in my departure for Europe. Go figure. So, I'm back to counting down the days. I have to count my blessings, too, though because I AM still going to Europe. I'll be leaving on Sunday evening and will get in on Monday afternoon when my TA ... read more

Well, here it is - my very last update from the state of Massachusetts and potentially from the USA altogether. Today (Thursday, 6/19), I depart for Washington DC one last time in order to pay a visit to my brother and all of his friends. As I was telling my mom the other day, the planning for this weekend reminds me of one of my birthdays when I was a kid; I think it was my 10th. I had slept in or taken a nap or something that day and when I woke up, my brother was wearing a birthday hat and had decorated the entire living room, and to boot, he was, somehow, WAY more excited about my birthday than I was! It's moments like these that keep coming back to me in waves and ... read more
