So, it went something like this: Sara and Zoe came in to work last week with really cute haircuts. I’ve been talking about needing one for a few weeks now, so the conversation naturally went to scheduling a day when I could get mine. For several days, Zoe and I sifted through photos of both myself and various celebrities with haircuts that have worked for me. In a world where “razor cut” and “Victoria Beckham” warrant a response of, “huh??” pictures were my biggest ally. Or so I thought. Today, Zoe and I met at 3 at one of our usual haunts and headed off to the land of many scissors to get my hair cut. Now, I should take a brief moment to acknowledge some… stereotypes. Like any ignorant American, I have a back pocket ... read more

Yep. This happened. Stories from Jessica White on Vimeo. Here are the lyrics that are being projected behind me: Waking up on a Sunday morning The sun's a-rising in all her glory Another beautiful day to be spent... inside. I walk through the doors and hear children screaming, Grace on the phone, Tony singing The echoes of Linzeen's high-heels down the hall. While Little and YoYo are herding the cats I get a greeting from Jeanne: "Today you look fat!" I won't take it personally, I'm sure she meant it well. (Chorus) Well, ooh-hoo everyone has a story Every one of those stories br... read more

It is unbelievable that we are heading into our final week of March! I still cannot wrap my head around how quickly the weeks scoot by. I knew that this year was going to go by very quickly, what with it being filled with new experiences… but this is madness. The end of March brings about the beginning of April which is going to be a month filled with “firsts” and plans. Lifestyle-wise, April is going to bring a very significant change. At work, I’m going to be taking on a classload and transitioning into more of a teaching position and away from the marketing madness. We are beginning a new term altogether the first week of April, so it’s a bit like a fresh start and reboot for the center at large. April is also ... read more

I cannot get over how quickly the weeks are flying by these days. I feel like I am only just beginning a week when suddenly I am hitting another weekend. So, in general, my life these days has this feeling of perpetual motion wherein things are so different from one day to the next, that each day starts to feel the same… if that makes any sense. My focus these last several weeks has unfortunately been on work, rather than on the beauty of the culture and environment by which I am surrounded. My Chinese friends continue to be absolute saints, and I continue to be thankful for that! But, today’s post will update you on some less mind-blowing abstracts because my professional self needs a vent. Stay tuned for future updates that may be more ... read more

Who has two thumbs and has been snowboarding in China??? This girl has!!! Let me lead into this effectively… There have been a lot of staff absences at our center this past couple weeks. Naturally, because of the relative flexibility in our schedule, Sara (and really, with it being FTs being gone… just me) and I have been landed with the brunt of the extra hours. On top of that, our schedule was changed drastically leaving us with an alleged 10-6 schedule, rather than everyone else’s 2-9 schedule… but the absences have found us working, essentially, 10-9 on multiple days in a row. This has meant that we have been extremely confused, frustrated and tired, leading to us feeling pretty burnt out in general. Fortunately for me, my friends of Chinese descent are extremely in tune ... read more

Well, I don’t have a whole lot to report this week – I’ll be honest… But, I've decided to press on and write despite the fact that not every week is going to have some mind-blowing revelation to write on... that's what makes the revelations mind-blowing, I suppose! The biggest event of this week is that the holidays are coming to a close here in China, and it’s back to the grind. I am happy to report that the sun decided to return to Hangzhou for a day or two this week as well, and with it a generally better mood for everyone. I’m starting to remember what it’s like to live in a city in the winter: grey. Despite the lake and the forests and the hills that can be found in and among the ... read more

新年快乐!Xin Nian Kuai Le! - Happy New Year!!! I will update this later when I have pictures to share... but I had to write something to record this exact moment: It is like a WAR ZONE here in Hangzhou tonight. Literally every corner of the city is being bombarded with a constant shower of fireworks and other various explosives. Every building has fireworks being shot OUT of it, including my own. I have NEVER seen anything quite like this! Wish me luck... I'm heading out into it in about 30 minutes!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ahhhhhh-kay... so it went something like this: Shortly after I made that post, I tromped out into the freezing cold war zone (World War I style... trench coat and all... well... ski jacket... but nevertheless...) to meet up with a friend. Knowing the effectiveness ... read more

As my last several posts reflect, things continue to go well here in Hangzhou! We’ve officially been released on the big Spring Festival holiday break, so I will not be returning to work until the 12th. Everyone else will be returning on the 17th. What can I say? I’m a sucker for holiday pay… Every year, not that unlike American schools’ Christmas break, Chinese commerce pretty well shuts down so that everyone can head home to be with their families for the Chinese New Year / Spring Festival holiday. Speaking specifically, the timing of this holiday is based on the moon’s movement into Aquarius – so it’s less about the date than it is about the moon cycle. In fact, I learned an interesting thing this year: given that my birth year is 1987, I grew ... read more

Your horoscope for January 28, 2013: The current planetary constellation is helping you to break out of an older pattern of relating, and encouraging another step forward in the process of understanding yourself. Change is the only thing in life that we can be certain of, and is a force for good, as it encourages you to look at the larger pattern, and find a deeper sense of purpose connecting you with all those you meet. I’m not normally one to pay quite this much attention to my horoscopes… but something about this experience is bringing me closer to my examination of things going on outside of myself. In so doing, I’ve become focused on what’s going on inside as well. Adding to my reflective behaviors, I bought a guitar last night; just another puzzle piece ... read more
