It is HOT!!!! In Hangzhou, we haven't had a day under 34°C (low 90s F) since the end of June. On top of that, it's been 60-80% humidity every day. It's absolutely disgusting. Dealing with public transportation on days such as this can be downright murder... or wannabe murder, anyway. And there's yet to be a day when I've arrived at work without having soaked through my clothing. It's a nasty, nasty heat that we're having over here, and I'm told that it's the worst in China for over 100 years. We're all in survival mode getting through this thing, and thanking our lucky stars that at least our apartments and work have air conditioning... because goodness knows no other locations do. I got myself all settled into the new place this week. I've taken some ... read more

Wow how these weeks do fly... Last week, I moved out of my apartment. My 6 months there created some pretty awesome memories, but the circumstances being what they were made it time to go - and I am at peace with that. Since then, I have been staying with Taryn in her new apartment, and will continue to do so until August 1 when I can finally settle into my own place. I'm a bit sad that Taryn didn't arrive in Hangzhou one month sooner. I am excited to be moving in with Juliet and Mitch, but I think that Taryn and I have made awesome roommates. She stayed at my place for just over a week as she transitioned to this apartment, and is now returning that favor to me. Both times, we've gotten ... read more

The great thing about living in a place like China - so different from my own home - is that it is easy to find oneself in a constant state of discovery and rediscovery. In my 7 months in China, I can honestly say that I've gone through 7 phases of existence. I've been awestruck, overwhelmed, inspired, agitated, ambitious, secluded and reawakened. This week, I've made a conscious decision to rediscover this place called Hangzhou. I have many new people in my little world over here now, and there are many pockets of the city that I haven't yet seen... and many that I haven't yet seen through the eyes of my new people. This process of rediscovery has reawakened a sense of adventure and appreciation for this whole China experience. It's very easy, no matter ... read more

June has been a busy, busy month in general! Certainly, things have really picked up at work now that I'm receiving more and more responsibility... but socially, things have been exploding as well. Recently, I've felt that I had kind of run out of things to report on in my blog-sphere. But, a friend pointed out that it's not that I'm running out of things to say, it's just that things don't seem so new to me anymore. So, I do have things to talk about, even if it doesn't seem all that interesting to me :) And maybe it's not interesting to you, either. But, here's a bit of a peek into some genuine ex-pat life in China. This month, a lot of my foreign friends have had significant events taking place. We've had birthdays, ... read more

Today, I have officially been in China for six months. It’s hard to believe, really. But half of a year has flown by, and it’s been a wild ride. In trying to think of ways to commemorate this moment, I decided that the best choice was obviously a compilation of Jess-osophies that have come from this experience. Several of these are lines from previous blog posts… others are clips and phrases that have become catches for me… others still are words of wisdom passed to me from some of my best people. For better or for worse, these are the words I’ve come to live by in my six months in China: ~ I'm here, I'm safe, I'm comfortable, and I am freaking aweeessommmmeee :) ~ Small victories. ~ If it smells dirty, it is. ~ ... read more

There is an element of Chinese culture that I have been anxious to try, and that is Chinese traditional medicine. The trouble with wanting to try something like this is that it means that one is HOPING to have a medical problem that requires attention… A number of years ago, I pretty well swore off pain medication for most ailments. I’m one of those oogly-boogly types that understands pain (and other discomforts for that matter) to be your body’s way of communicating with you. By popping pain pills, I feel that I am simply muting the public service announcement and doing nothing about the information on the screen. Well, not using pain medication, on the other hand, means that one really needs some way to handle pain and discomfort because otherwise one is just… uncomfortable and ... read more

May has arrived, and with it – a lot of rain in Hangzhou. I’m told that the Spring season here is very temperamental in that we will have 3 days of pouring rain followed by 4 days of sweltering heat. So far, I believe what I’ve been told as it has been accurate. Mom went home about a week ago, following a spectacular 2-day vacation in Shanghai. Two days was the perfect amount of time: just enough time to experience a night in the life of the rich and famous atop an iconic hotel in Shanghai, sipping cocktails and enjoying the view. Besides, after our stay in Beijing, we decided to prolong our stay in Hangzhou for a little while before heading out again. The personality in Hangzhou is better suited to the experience that my ... read more

This has been one of the fastest, craziest weeks that I have had to date! My mom arrived last week on Tuesday. Sara and I were able to fetch her without too many issues, though we did arrive at the meeting place after my mom had already gone through customs, etc. Sadly, this meant that I did not have the opportunity to jump, shout and enthusiastically wave my pre-decorated Disney balloon and watch Sara turn an ungodly shade of red as promised. Huge bummer. But, a trip in to and back out of Hangzhou without a hitch is cause for celebration enough. Mom has managed to proceed with her visit to China with ZERO jet-lag. I am not sure what voodoo she pulled off in order to make this happen, but she has been an absolute ... read more

Well, Jenny’s Bachelorette Party was a great success. It was mostly another KTV excursion with a few familiar faces – but it was exactly what Jenny wanted, and a good time was had by all. You may recall an entry from a few months back where I posted photos of Jenny, Blade and me hiking around Linying Temple. Please feel free to express confusion at the fact that the photos of the woman pictured here are also labeled “Jenny”… and here’s why: Those of us still working for the Mouse arrived casually late to the KTV party. We walked in to find three lovely ladies already singing their hearts out – namely, Amy, Summer and some new girl I’d never met before. I figured Jenny had brought a friend, and why wouldn’t she? It’s her party… ... read more

It's growing on me. Literally. So there you go :) Otherwise... It's been another busy couple of days! Nothing entirely NEW to report, per se, but I have been keeping myself occupied with a lot of new things. I have a small handful of friends that are not Disney-related, so it's been nice to actually take some time to completely remove myself from work once in awhile. I've had some nice walks around the city and on some of the hills, but admittedly have spent no time at all near the actual lake in several weeks. At some point, I really do need to venture down there again. In a couple of weeks, my mom will be here. So, I've also been busy making all of those plans come together. We have a very, very busy ... read more
