Geo: 44.4702, -73.1794We are headed back to Vermont. Almost done with the US leg of our trip. Our scheduled stop is Montpelier, the capital of Vermont. It is the smallest resident population (8000) state capital in the US. However, the day population is 21,000 likely due to the many government offices. The city was settled in 1787 and incorporated as a city in 1885.State street is populated primarily by a variety of government services. Many offices are located in older homes which have been converted.About an hour away is Burlington which is located on Lake Champlain. Much of the upper town seems to be taken up by the University campus. The balance is entertainment and shopping. One of the main streets is closed to traffic and us a long pedestrian walkway.Thankfully the weather has cooperated. We drove in rain ... read more

Geo: 42.9422, -71.4669Change of plans for the day. The weather predictions for tomorrow and the next day are for wet weather. So far we have been very lucky with the weather. We decided to do the White Mountain route today. Our trip began in the Green Mountains and Finger Lakes of Vermont. Here the hills are gently rounded and not very high. Between the hills are small lakes. Very picturesque. It is Saturday so many of the towns along the way have markets - one of which we stopped at.We stopped at Windsor which is considered to be the birthplace of Vermont in 1777.We headed North as far as St. Johnsbury and then South to Littleton which probably has more Second Hand/Antique shops than anywhere else we have been. The White Mountains are much higher with rock outcroppings and ... read more

Geo: 42.8975, -73.2078Our goal today was to get over to route 7 which leads from Massachusetts into Vermont. According to the travel guide this is one of the most scenic routes to see the changing colours in the Fall. Unfortunately it seems nobody told the trees that. My guess is global warming is at play because we have heard several comments about how warm it is for mid- September. We ended up in a small town - Bennington. There are a few items of historical interest and many very beautiful homes. A conversation with a local said that many people work in Albany, NY which is an hour away.We visited 3 very nice covered bridges as well as the Bennington War Memorial which is a 306 feet tall and commemorates the Battle of Bennington during the American ... read more

Geo: 43.0708, -70.7782Bath is located south of where we were staying on Highway 1. The visitors bureau is an old railway station. The people there were very helpful. The town itself has many older buildings including one of the upper streets which has many grand old houses of various styles. The Maine Maritime Museum was a real treasure. The site of the museum was a facility for the construction of wooden ships and schooners in the past. The largest was the Wyoming. The metal sculpture representation is full size although the masts were about 50% higher than shown. It is hard to imagine the size of these wooden ships. The museum consisted of several buildings which illustrated the various processes involved in the construction of a wooden sailing ship. The City of Bath is known for its ... read more

Geo: 44.316, -69.8049The hotel yesterday recommended we go down the Maine Coast and visit some of the smaller towns. On the way we crossed a very interesting bridge which had replaced another interesting bridge. The previous bridge was renowned as being the prettiest steel bridge of its time. The current bridge is also an interesting design. Our first stop was Belfast which is very quaint with many older buildings. We also met a couple from Indianapolis who were part of a car rally consisting of older vehicles. We had seen several of the older cars earlier in the morning.By the time we were ready to leave the number of tourists had increased. Our next destination was Camden. Again a very pretty New England town. By now the tourists were numerous so a trip to the pub was in order.Final stop ... read more

Geo: 44.5292, -68.4032Today's destination is Bar Harbour - one of those not to miss tourist places which one can manage for a couple of hours only. The area is well known as a vacation destination. Our route there was interesting. We had originally planned on taking the highway but our host last night suggested an alternate route. We drove to a ferry dock at Back Bay and boarded the NB ferry to Deer Island. The inter-island ferries in NB are free. We crossed the island to catch another ferry to Campobello Island. That was an interesting experience. It is a privately owned barge which is attached to a small tug like boat. When the ferry launches, the barge is adrift until the tug switched sides. It is the first time I have driven aboard a ferry directly from the ... read more

Geo: 45.059, -66.7845Today we traveled on the Confederation Bridge ($46) which is 13 K long. The concrete sides are very high so it is difficult to see the water. It was very windy. Our drive across the lower portion of New Brunswick was primarily on divided highways. The weather is good so it is easy driving. Our quick research suggested there was not a lot to see in Saint John so we bypassed visiting the city. Our B & B is in Blacks Harbour but we visited St. Andrews first and then backtracked after dinner.According to the local sign, Blacks Harbour is home to the sardine industry.... read more

Geo: 46.1957, -63.3318First order of business today was to visit Charlottetown which we had previously bypassed. The weather prediction was for rain today but it turned out not to be the case. However, like many days here in the Maritimes it is windy.Province House (the birthplace of Confederation is under renovation) so we unfortunately did not get a chance to go inside. Also, the Confederation exhibit in the Arts Centre was closed on Sundays.Down the street is St. Dunstan's Basilica. We didn't get a chance to walk around inside the church due to Sunday services. As we were walking we noticed a quaint entry to what appeared to be a hotel. We went in to look at the lobby. The receptionist was very obliging and told us about the hotel which actually occupies many buildings and has ... read more

Geo: 46.1957, -63.3319The island of PEI is roughly divided into 3 regions with 2 major cities. We are staying in the more central region closer to Charlottetown. This morning we headed west towards Summerside. There was not a great deal to see there so we headed north towards the Atlantic Coast. We visited the home where Lucy Maud Montgomery spent most of her childhood. We also drove past the home she was born in.Continuing along route 6 we visited several of the Atlantic side beaches. To date we had eaten a few lobster rolls so today we decided we would enjoy a complete lobster. One of those things you have to do even though lobster rolls are a better deal. We ate mid-day so our evening meal will be bread, cheese & wine at the B & B. ... read more

Geo: 46.1957, -63.3318The drive from Kentville to Caribou took about 2.5 hours with very variable weather - cloudy with periods of drizzle. Caribou is where you catch a ferry to PEI.There is a ferry and a bridge to PEI. You do not pay to go there but you do pay to leave. We were told the return ferry cost is $76 for vehicle including passengers and the bridge is cheaper. The ferry crossing was 75 minutes. You will notice that the sign says the cost is subsidized by the Feds. However, BC Ferry ships are much nicer.Boarding the ferry was a bit of a shock. You enter on one level where the larger vehicles are parked. From there, some cars go up ramps to an upper level. Other cars including us go down a ramp to ... read more
