When short can be made longer I reckon you must have been stirred on your last trip to these lonely isles Ralf, that you feel compelled to return to be shaken and stirred some more. Must be something pretty special to travel so far. Looking forward to where the mystery road leads.
Just so much to see, and it is all beautiful Could spend years here, but for now a couple of months each year will have to do. Just returned from Togean Isles, still paradise for now, but tourist are a coming in bigger numbers every year. Still plenty of islands to choose from though. Live is good
Mostly Bad roads on Sulawesi, but there are lots of roadworks everywhere, so maybe in a few years there will be good roads everywhere. Now it is a patchwork of mainly bad roads, with a few good sections in between.
Tewah and longhouses Hi - interesting post. You're right that there is no betang (longhouse) in the village of Tewah. But if you hadn't stopped there, but continued further up the Kahayan River you would have come across two of the better-known longhouses of Central Kalimantan - at Tumbank Korik and Tumbang Anoi. But the roads are not as good as the ones you travelled on! And you actually need to take a klotok canoe to get to Korik - but it's well worth the journey and the expense... There are a number of English-speaking people (both Indonesian and westerners) living in and around Palangkaraya (I'm one of them...) It's not nearly as isolated as you make out! But it IS extraordinary - particularly when you can get to experience the living Dayak culture in the up-river villages. Check my blog at www.jokar.com.au/blog for stories and photos (including about the longhouses at Anoi, Korik and Malahoi)
Thanks for the comment I don't think I made it out to be particularly difficult to get to. There is just little to no information on it, and the Lonely Planet makes it out be nearly impossible to get to. I found out for myself that it was in fact rather easy to get to Teweh, and just as easy to get to Malahoi, as I think I indicated in my blog. Thanks for the info on Anoi and Korik, it can be handy for future travellers in that direction.
time special blog, jut read the last one to see how this journey ended..I liked saying how time differs in different countries.. events, actions, experiences and many more ingredients to the feel of time..
Thanks Yes, time is an interesting construct, especially since it only ever flows forward... Even if the pace it which it does so varies (seemingly) per country ;)
What a time! What a fabulous journey between Vilcabamba to Tarapopo--I checked in out on the map-wow! Now, I'd really like to do this--thanks for the great inspiration. Hope you get to do the Tarapopo to Lima road sometime, one I'm planning to do in reverse. How lovely that your brother and his family live in Lima, so you always have a great excuse to visit this great country. Happy Spring!
Hahahahahahaha !!! It looks like you are having fun but fun always comes to an end and soon everything will be back to normal. You will be traveling, Kim will will get beaten in to a pulp and be half deaf after being shouted at, your mother will return home and all will be normal again. All in a day's work for a Kreuze right ?
Time out This blog was certainly not a waste of time... Time cannot be wasted, it can be used productively or non-productively. Time is indeed a strange thing! Failed have our attempts as a society to keep track of time with our mediocre creations, such as clocks... Clocks can only keep up with time - not keep it. Fun blog...
Ralf I think your arrangement is perfectly reasonable, if you weren't to do it the amount of time you could spend travelling with your mum would be much more limited and it's time that's important not money. Enjoy!
What is soon? I'm a bit of a drifter, so while I thought I'd be in Ecuador a couple of years ago, I'm still in Arequipa. However, the immigration people said that it appeared I was living here (well, yes, for about 2 years), so they only gave me 3 months. So, yes, I imagine I'll be in Ecuador around mid-May when my 3 months expires here. Soon for me, but I imagine you'll be in some other exotic part of the world by then. I will be in Lima sometime between a couple of weeks to a month from now.
Touring with mama :) Hey just wanted to say that I've been travelling with my mother since 2012 as well and so far it has been a wonderful experience for me and we both created new memories along the way. And I'm sure you did that with your mom as well. So I'm glad that I found another person who likes to travel with their mother. Best of luck to your future travels :)
What's important No matter what angle you spin for this blog Ralf, what comes over loud and clear is that you are taking this trip 'cause you love your mum. When you break it down, family is what endures through all of life's journeys if one wants a happy life.
Tricky Travel! I love your last line when you point out that while it might be tricky traveling with a mother or a friend with different budgets, it shouldn't get in the way of the sharing a wonderful experience. Like you, I'm a $15-$20/day budget traveler, while most of my friends are more like your mom. It's tricky finding that mid-point, but it can be done. I think you two struck a fine balance of which you should be righteously proud. Very well-done. This cable car in the cloud forest of Mindo looks fabulous--I can hardly wait!
