Carnival continues with nothing other than parties, beers, good times and fantastic friends! Notice there is no mention of sleep!! We managed to bag ourself some tickets for the Sambadrome on Sunday night (the carnival dancing you see on tv) and wow it was FANTASTIC. Words and photos will never do it justice. From 10pm to 7:30am we watched five samba schools strut their stuff for an hour each with unimaginable costumes and floats with every colour you can imagine. It was literally an orgasm for the eyes!!! You just cannot fathom organising that many people on that scale! Some people may have seen that there was an accident after the first school, where the last float crashed into the crowd. We did witness this but we're unsure of what exactly had happened. Local news did ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro February 22nd 2017

So ilhabela was beautiful! An island paradise. We pitched up at our hostal and headed straight to the beach. That evening we had some amazing seafood and a couple of good beers for good measure. The next day was pretty much suncream-sunbathe-swim-repeat!! Just what the doctor ordered! Over the next few days this is pretty much how it went. We did hire some bikes and found ourselves on a private beach after nearly killing Jo going up hill on a bike. However the best day was when we tried to watch the rugby in a pub and failed! So we took our bikes for a short ride (according to the map) to one of ilhabela's many beautiful waterfalls. When we set off it was fine, nice and flat but really hot and sticky. This only got ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » Ilhabela February 8th 2017

So after a few days of chilling in the rather hot Brazilian sun and going a bit pink in places we were headed onto another bus for São Paulo. This bus journey was probably the scariest we had been on. The bus kept stopping every half an hour with people either rushing on or rushing off the bus. We were held at a military check point for ages in the dark. With the help of google translate we managed to ask a local, what the hell was going on! Turns out the people running on and off the bus were smuggling contraband and the bus company was helping them!! This continued through out the night so unfortunately no sleep for us! Having done some googling I found out São Paulo is the biggest shipping port in ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 31st 2017

So there we were bright eyed and full of hope, anxious with excitement to get to Buenos Aires. Just the short matter of a 27 hour bus journey........ or so we thought! Our first leg of the journey to the Bolivian border flew by! Luxury seats that fully reclined, good air con and a good nights sleep. We arrived at the boarder town of Vizella around half 10 in the morning and had to find our connecting bus. Some broken Spanish later in the bus office we were put into a taxi to get to the bus. Alarm bells should have started to ring when we arrived at our final bus - the guy who put our bags on was in less than a healthy state and sounded like he was about to die. He was ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz January 22nd 2017

So I managed to convince a reluctant jo to do the death road bike ride. We woke up in the morning and all I could do was throw up- I'm not sure about death road, I felt like death already! Nothing to do with alcohol, maybe altitude but most likely a bug. So a 40 min bus ride to the top of the mountain was challenging to say the least! 4800m up we suited up with pads and biking gear before heading off. The first part of the ride was nice and smooth downhill on flat paved road- but cars were passing us, so a wee bit hairy at points! Bikes back on the bus, quick 10 min coach ride and a bite to eat before heading off on the real death road! Now the reason ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz January 19th 2017

So we packed up our bags again and headed by bus to Puno. A small town on the edge of lake titikaka and close to the boarder of Bolivia! We checked into our hostal and thought we would have a quick shower and change before heading out for some dinner. I quickly popped down stairs for some towels and to borrow the hairdryer! Guess what.......... I blew up another hairdryer!!! I seriously think I'm jinxed!!! The next day we were up early to potter around Puno and do some souvenir shopping. Due to the amount of alpaca produce we brought we thought it would be a good idea to send some of it home! WRONG! Bad idea- we stood in line for over an hour with this box of stuff to send, everyone pushed in front ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail January 14th 2017

So the day started for us in Ollyantaytambo bright eyed and bushy tailed onto the coach to get to kilometer 82. A brief meeting with the crew and we were off. The first day was up and down with every kind of weather thrown at us possible. As a group we made good time but got to the camp site in the howling rain, so no way of getting dry in a tent for the night. We freshened up as able and then had a more formal introduction to our crew of porters, chef, sues chef and waiter!!! Our guides were James and Edison. After a fab meal ( seriously good considering we were camping) it was an early night in prep for the day we had all been dreading tomorrow. A nice 5am wake up ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Ollantaytambo January 9th 2017

After a horrendous journey on the night bus we arrived in Cusco. Thankfully we were able to check into the hotel early so after a quick shower and freshen up I decided to dry my hair, what a mistake! The hairdryer exploded in flames as I screamed the hotel down. Jo was in the shower and was unsure whether I was dead or alive! After putting out the fire we threw the hairdryer into the corridor, crisis averted. Sometime later a little Peruvian man appeared at the door, hairdryer in hand and a confused look upon his face. Needless to say the hairdryer was no more, RIP. Then it was off out for breakfast. We went to cafe called Jacks and had enough food to feed to 5000 and finally we got our hands on a ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa January 6th 2017

Hits everyone! Sorry it's been a while but he internet hasn't been all that fab. So after we last touched base we went sand boarding in the dessert! What a laugh that was. Sand everywhere!!!!! We also got chance to stop off at a few other places of historical significance to the incas and we're really starting to get a feel for the place. After that we got footed it onto the night bus to get us to Aeroquipa in the morning. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and slept the whole way! Once in Aeroqipa the day was ours to explore. We went to the maker and brought loads of different fruits to try (they were mostly delicious) aaaannnnnddd I got myself some walking boots for An absolute bargain!! You ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Barranco January 3rd 2017

Hello everyone!!! We finally made it! - we had an awful journey here with a very long stop over in São Paulo! Celebrated new year three times but slept through two of them. Finally landed to discover- my boots have got lost in transit! We really aren't having the best of starts lol! I can laugh about it now but obviously wasn't amused at the time! They'd also stolen my cable ties from my bag too! We got a taxi from the airport into Lima- that was an experience in itself!!! They make the m25 look tame, cars nearly crashing into each other with about 15 people in 1 car- mental! We arrived at the hostel in 1 piece thankfully, our hotelier took pitty on us and let us have our room early. I swear to ... read more
