Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney April 22nd 2017

Landed in the land down under for a warm welcome from Darryl! There he was milky white with a huge back pack full of goodies for us waiting at the gate! Taxi to Sydney and we arrived where we were staying, with a friend from home in her apartment for a few nights. We stopped for a quick freshen up and then hit the town. Darryl had brought us tickets to a local NRL game Manly sea eagles vs Melbourne storm. So we hopped onto the ferry to take us over to Manly! On route we were able to see and get some great pics of the opera house and harbour bridge. We stopped for a quick bite to eat in the lovely Manly before heading off to the game. Darryl was already into the full ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Milford Sound April 16th 2017

Milford sounds was as beautiful as it was last year despite the grey cloud and threat of imminent rain. We got off the boat feeling relaxed and having had a good dose of fresh air. One comment I would make is that there was decidedly less snow on the mountains this year compared to last. We jumped in the car and decided to make the long drive over to the opposite coast and make base in Dunedin for the night. It was a long drive, and at times we were the only car on the road with only fields for miles around- slightly concerning! We arrived late evening, had dinner and basically went to bed early after a long day- god we're getting old. The next day poured and I mean pored with rain, constantly! We ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Fox Glacier April 12th 2017

The weather managed to hold out a little for us for foxes glacier and we decided to take the hours walk up to it for some more amazing photos. As Jo so aptly put it on a quick video- small pappy, small lauren, BIG MOUNTAIN! The scenery is really quite impressive and me and Jo have both become rock/geology lovers overnight! Still on to Wanaka we headed via the Haast national park. Yet another awful awful drive with horrible scenery!!!! (Sense the sarcasm there!) We stopped off at the blue pools- I had been here last year and was keen for a swim this time around. A quick car change later and we were off with our towels to the pools. Covered head to toe with bug spray for good measure- I remembered Auntie Karen had ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Hokitika April 8th 2017

The drive to Christchurch couldn't be done quick enough! I got to see Julian and Jem again basically a year to the day! I was so excited!!! Before we met them we had a quick pop into Christchurch to do a little sight seeing- we didn't do to much as we knew we would be back here before we fly to Australia. We saw the scars still left on the landscape from the earthquake six years ago, as well as some of the newer ones. Next stop was the pub for a well deserved catch up and a beer! It was so good to see everyone and makes me miss them even more! When we got home Julian wanted to hear schnitzels death rattle for himself and took her out for a spin! In agreement it ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Picton April 7th 2017

Finally we were on board the inter islander ferry, we settled in with a cheeky cider and an ice cream for most of the journey. When we came into Marlborough sounds we went above deck and wow was it fantastic. It reminded me of Milford sounds a bit from last year when I was here. We stayed up there all the way into picton- despite being hit on by a man old enough to be my father (we politely declined the invitation to stay in his motel room- several times!) once off at the other end we headed the long way around to Kaikoura due to the road closures. This would lead us to stop for the night at a place called lake Rotoiti which was beautiful! We camped in a spot literally on the lake ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua April 1st 2017

So Rotorua is known to the locals a Rotovagas as it's pretty much a play ground amongst the sulphur and mud pools in this thermal environment. The weather was still a bit hit and miss so in between the torrential rain we popped out and had a look at some of the active spots in the local park, soaked our feet in some sulphur pools and managed to hold our breath long enough to stand the eggy fart smell for some pictures! Jo's friends from home Adam and Hannah were waiting to sky dive in Taupo but wanted to join up with us the next day, so we camped out another night. Unfortunately their skydive didn't go ahead due to the weather, so we met up the next day at the sky park for some luge, ... read more

Having nearly been in New Zealand for a week it was back in the spaceship schnitzel for some more adventuring! We popped into Pukekoe and ended up staying with Kath and Carey for the evening. We enjoyed a lovely BBQ on the 16 burner grill with Whitney playing in the background! Although if you ask Jo there was maybe too much steak!! She hasn't looked at one since! Back in the car the next day and it was off to the coromandels! We had a lovely walk along cooks beach, paddling our feet in the water- we basically had it to ourselves. Deciding we needed to see more we put on our swim wear and headed to warm water beach- unfortunately we had just missed the low tide for enjoying the warm water! Not disheartened we ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland March 21st 2017

A short twelve and a half hour flight later and it was touch down New Zealand. We landed ahead of schedule at 5am!! We headed though customs, quick inspection of our walking boots and we were free to go! We managed to have a quick freshen up, change some money and grab some breakfast before a reunion with Auntie Karen and Uncle Lee- who were ending their trip. The newest arrival to the Jones clan- little Oliver was there to greet us with Fern also. A quick catch up over our first cider in nearly three months flew by before they were off. The lovely Fern had agreed to put us up for a few nights whilst we brought the car, visited Auckland and generally got sorted. Most importantly we were able to do some washing ... read more

South America » Chile » Atacama » Caldera March 21st 2017

A quick stop over in Santiago (no tattoos this time) and we were off to the airport! A few hours later we were in the middle of the atacama desert! The only way to explain this place is, it as though they have picked up a town and literally placed it in the most isolated desolate place in Chile. We got dropped off at the bus station and had to walk to our hostel. It was like a scene from a western movie, the dog was following us and all the houses were mud huts. The locals came out only to have a good look at the silly tourists humping around backpacks in the midday sun. We eventually arrived at our hostel- which actually was really cute. Bag drop and into town (if you can call ... read more

South America » Chile » Araucanía » Pucón March 12th 2017

Valparaiso is known as the seaside resort for Santiago with Vina del mar just up the road from there known as the garden city of Chile and host to a big annual festival! We arrived around midday checked into our hostel which was perched up on the hillside in the graffiti neighbourhood. It was pretty cool to look at and there was loads of it to see. We decided to go on the free walking tour to orientate ourselves so headed out down the long stair case to the bottom of the hill. Unfortunately we didn't do the walking tour. No sooner had we got there, I projectile vomited and more millimetres from a dog! A flustered Jo managed to hail a cab and we swiftly returned to the safety of the hostel and headed to ... read more
