We had such a lovely day venturing to Toledo this morning. It's a medieval city 45 minutes from Madrid, and the original capitol of Spain. Historically, Jews Christians and Muslims lived here peaceably until 1492 when Ferdinand and Isabella evicted Jews and Muslims. Signs of the Jewish quarter still exist in small blue tiles inlaid in the cobblestone, showing menorahs and the Hebrew word for life, and Moorish influence on architecture can be seen in the horseshoe-shaped archways of the synagogue-turned-mosque-turned-church. Citizens were preparing for the Corpus Christi festivities tomorrow, so hundreds of children were gathered to lay flowers in front of the church, and the cobblestoned streets were decorated in bright floral adornments. Banners and flags flew from balconies. There was a celebratory hum in the air! After Toledo we returned to Madrid for lunch. ... read more

We have arrived safely in Spain! As anyone who has traveled to Europe knows, the first day overcoming jetlag is always the hardest, so by dinnertime, we were trying not to fall asleep in our noodles. But what a great first day! We met our tour director Joe who guided us through the streets under the warm Spanish sun for an orientation to Madrid. We enjoyed gelato in Plaza Mayor, photographed the famous bear with the strawberry tree (in nickname only, as the fruits that bears fed on in the hills merely resembled strawberries...), and visited the Museo del Prado. I couldn't believe the detailed symbolism in Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights," and Goya's striking (sometimes morbid) use of light and shadow. Tomorrow we will learn more about El Greco when we visit Toledo. Off to ... read more

This morning we pack for our overnight journey to Belgium. As time is limited before our early train, we choose a Starbucks in the beautiful train station in which to break our fast. It's muffins and mochas beneath high gothic ceilings, heavy wooden beamed architecture, and droopy, amber-colored chandeliers. A tile mosaic above the doorway reads Europa. It's the most stunning, ornate building for an otherwise familiar trip to a coffee shop. ROTTERDAM Our train whisks us to Rotterdam where we hop on a tram to the Erasmus bridge to await our water bus. The chill of the wind bites through our zippers and drawstrings. And yet, there's no rain, so we are pleased. We board the water bus (thankfully with indoor seating!) for a 30 minute ride from urban, modern Rotterdam to rural polder countryside. ... read more

While I shower, Sean steps out to buy pastries and hot chocolate for breakfast; then it's onto the Van Gogh Museum. The way they have displayed his art tells the chronological narrative of his life--from early studies of color and shadow; to study of the self ("the painted self portrait could reveal more of the man than where the machine--the camera--could ever go," he said). We learn how greens and oranges and blues up close create a peachy skin tone or ochre beard from afar; how letters from Vincent to his brother Theo reveal the thought he put into color and form; how his sorrow and self-consciousness over not being recognized for his work--selling only three paintings in his lifetime, ultimately wore him down; how after his first Sunflowers painting, he proclaimed himself the painter of ... read more

On the morning of the second day, we rented two of our hotel's bright yellow bicycles with the words "Bilderberg Hotel" printed on the frames in bold black lettering. They also offered us a neon sign to carry around that announced, "WE ARE TOURISTS!" but we declined. We headed out into the flow of bike traffic to make our way to the breakfast nook Sean had chosen. And we survived! Actually, we quickly learned that once you are inside the stream of cycling traffic, you're actually safer than trying to make your way across traffic as a vulnerable pedestrian. Biking was smooth, quick, and efficient. Enjoy the pic of Sean's backside, snapped while riding my bike! We arrived at the Pancake Bakery to sample some Dutch pancakes--and what a sugary treat they were. Warm, crepe-like pancakes ... read more

We made it to Amsterdam! After a bumpy flight from Houston that shook the wine from our glasses, we were glad to land at Schipol Airport Sunday morning. It's always exciting to emerge from a new airport into the sunlight. What adventures lay ahead? What secrets would this city divulge? Who might we chat with? We caught the bus to the Museumplein, named for its many museums in the district. Just a block from our hotel were the Van Gogh museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the modern art museum (which would turn out to be an overpriced disappointment!). A few fall leaves skittered around on the pavement as we found the yellow awning of the Bilderberg Hotel and dropped off our bags. Then, it was off to explore! The IAMSTERDAM sign seemed a logical first destination with ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236What a whirlwind day of sightseeing in London! We began the day with a city bus tour that bypassed Big Ben (named for the bell, not the building) and the Houses of Parliament, as well as Westminster Abbey and the River Thames. While bus tours are not everyone's favorite (we might have preferred exploring the city on our own two feet), our tour guide was a short, feisty woman who cussed freely until she learned there were middle school kids on the bus and unfortunately curtailed her colorful narration. She was highly entertaining! We ended the tour in front of Buckingham Palace for the conclusion of the changing of the guard ceremony. Then we were free to explore the city on our own. Because of a monetary gift from my aunt Kristi in the ... read more

Geo: 52.1919, -1.70713It was a literary day! Our first stop was Anne Hathaway's family cottage outside of Stratford-upon-Avon, and although we were there for the history of her family and her later marriage to William Shakespeare, it may have been the surrounding gardens that stole the show. Bright pink foxglove and towers of purple delphinium waved in the breeze, shrubs of lavender perfumed the air, and bumblebees buzzed about the pastoral scene, oblivious to their human visitors.Inside the cottage, we enjoyed a short narrative introduction from one of the tour guide staff members--an elegant British woman in her 70s whose pleated slacks and pearls were as polished as her speech. She pointed out the alleged "courting bench" where William and Anne supposedly sat while he came to call, but then shared how the previous owners of ... read more
