Geo: 9.93, -84.08After a long day of traveling, we are safely in San Jose, Costa Rica! We enjoyed a smooth day of transitions between airports (Boise, Salt Lake, Atlanta, San Jose), and were happy to see all of our luggage when we landed here this evening. Our Tour Guide Edgar met us with a big grin just beyond the immigration and customs checkpoints, and led us to our van where we were whisked over hilly streets and through the city lights to the Hotel Tournon. We all enjoyed calling out the billboards signs in Espanol. Once in the hotel dining room, dinner awaited us: a fresh green salad, a rice and chicken entrée, followed by a caramel cake for dessert. Everyone is in high spirits, ready for a good night's sleep, and eager for the adventures ... read more

Geo: 43.611, -116.393Family, Friends, and Parents of Student Travelers - Tomorrow we depart for Costa Rica! Sean and I are very excited to make this first trip to Central America, especially after almost 2 years of preparation for this vacation. The students have worked extremely hard throughout the last school year to raise funds for the trip (we sold a LOT of pizza!), and we're all eager to finally set foot upon Costa Rican soil. Our flight departs Boise tomorrow at 6:30 AM (meaning we'll have to be at the airport at the very early hour of 4:30!). From here, we'll fly to Salt Lake, then to Atlanta, and then into San Jose, Costa Rica, landing at about 8 PM. There is no time change for us (meaning no jet lag--yay!), so we'll enjoy dinner upon ... read more

Europe » France June 19th 2011

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097(Erin here.) It's our final day in Europe, and Paris seems the perfect place to spend it. We are delighted by our hotel breakfast because it includes more than just cold cuts and cheese for once. Today we're actually treated to warm, flaky croissants. Some are even filled with ooey-gooey chocolate which has us wondering how we've ever lived without chocolate-filled croissants every morning of our lives in the States. We spend the morning on a bus/walking tour of Paris city proper—taking in the traditional sites of the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysees, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Napoleon's gold-domed tomb. It's when we get out of the bus to walk around on the back streets when we really begin to get a feel for the city. Because it's Sunday, many of the shops ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097(Sean here.)This morning greeted us with a new form of transportation we had not experienced to this point in our trip – the bullet train. We were set to travel from Heidelberg, Germany to Paris, France which was expected to take between 2 – 3 hours. I was excited for a change from the bus just for something different, and was not entirely disappointed. We shuffled through our usual tour breakfast of cold cuts and cheeses mixed with oddities of unflavored yogurt and warm milk for cereal, and then were off to the train station. Manuel staged our stops through the station as he raced about getting tickets and researching the appropriate location for our group to line up for the train. Ultimately, a sleek magnetic train hummed into the station and our group ... read more

Geo: 49.4019, 8.68024(Sean here.)Well, another bus day greeted us following our amazing day in Lucerne and I must confess some sadness in having to leave Switzerland. Although our bank account will feel better (Switzerland is expensive – One lunch of bratwurst and fries = 19CHF or about $25-$27!), I am sorry to leave the crisp air of the Alps, the stunning views of the surrounding mountains, the melodic jingle of cow bells, and the pending feeling of adventure from the trails we had not hiked. Switzerland has definitely lodged itself in my mind as a place we must return to explore more deeply. So, once my melancholy subsided, we turned our focus to Germany once again with a stop at Rheinfalls (the tallest waterfall in Europe), the Black Forest, and a night's stay in Heidelberg. After logging ... read more

Geo: 47.0457, 8.30824(Erin here.)If there ever were a day that surpassed our expectations while on tour, Lucerne, Switzerland would be it! We took a short walking tour around the city, the first stop of which was at the Dying Lion of Lucerne sculpture. Picture a green reflecting pond with a limestone cliff on the far side. Into the cliff was carved a larger-than-life lion in a sleeping position, and an almost human-like sadness registering on his face, expressing the deepest agony and sorrow possible to man or beast. A broken spear carved out of stone also protrudes from his side, the clear reason for his anguish. The lion was carved to commemorate the Swiss guards who lost their lives while guarding King Louis XVI during the French Revolution, and of the statue, Mark Twain once said ... read more

Geo: 45.442, 10.9955(Sean here.)Travel from Venice, Italy to Lucerne, Switzerland via Verona, Italy"On the road again, just can't wait to be on that road again" Willy rolled through my head as we boarded the bus again for another long day of travel as we made our way from Venice to Lucerne. Our day began a little later as our fellow group from South Carolina had a late night at the dance club while we had a late night playing on the beach near the Adriatic Sea. The bus pulled out of the parking lot a little after 9:30am, and we were back to chewing up the kilometers through northern Italy. Two hours later, we came upon our first stop in Verona, Italy, where we were given two hours of freedom to explore the city. Europe » Italy » Veneto June 14th 2011

Geo: 45.5151, 12.672(Erin here.) Venice was incredible! We started out the day with a 30 minute ferry ride to Murano, which is a tiny island northeast of Venice. Being on the water was lovely—warm, salty breezes and lots of Mediterranean sunshine! The captain even let me drive the boat when I was standing next to him. "Hands here. You drive," he said. In Murano, we watched a glass blowing demonstration where three men all worked together on one project with their long glass blowing tubes, moving the hot ends in and out of the fire, cooling the glass in cold water, and always turning and turning it to maintain a uniform bulb on the end. The younger two were clearly serving the older glass blowing master, who was seamless in his movements. First there was the ... read more

Geo: 45.5331, 12.6447Travel to Venice, Italy via Innsbruck, Austria"That's a Keep!" How often do you hear that when driving through the Mountain Home desert? Personally, I haven't, but maybe I am just driving in the wrong areas. Well, Jared shouted that exact phrase as we began our ascent through the Alps in southern Germany on our way to Innsbruck and Venice and that stuck with me as a sign we were truly not in Idaho anymore. In case you are wondering, a Keep was a medieval type structure that slightly resembled a castle tower and happened to be a rather common site on our longest bus day yet as we wound through the Alps. The views were beautiful, but somewhat tempered by the low hanging clouds that prevented us from seeing the true grandeur of the ... read more

Geo: 48.1391, 11.5802(Sean here.) Wrapping Up in MunichFollowing the emotional rollercoaster of leaving one of our fellow travelers, we were off to the next leg of our adventure – Munich's Olympic Park. This makes Erin's and my third venture to a former Olympic venue (Barcelona and Athens previously), so we were excited to see what Munich had to offer. After another 45 minutes on the bus, we pulled into site of the park and were greeted with masses of traffic. Why you ask? Well, a true icon of pop music happened to be in concert that evening – Mr. Jon Bon Jovi himself. Perhaps you don't share my affinity for Jon Bon, but, needless to say, I was pretty excited. When asked if we could trade in our Bratwurst dinner evening for a little "Living on ... read more
