Geo: 52.9014, -3.87611This morning we said farewell to Ireland and boarded a ferry to sail across Irish Sea bound for Wales. It was a three hour journey aboard this cruise ship-like boat where students had lots of room to roam. Restaurants served croissants and breakfast sandwiches which were Egg McMuffins on steroids and lots of carpeted spaces invited comfy places to get some rest. Mostly we read and wrote and enjoyed the sunrise glittering on the chilly water.Once we landed in Wales it was a smooth transition to collect our luggage and then we boarded the next bus (called a coach) and headed for Snowdonia National Park. We stopped in a quaint village for about a 30 minute walk around the city which contained a medieval castle and marina for sailboats. While the breeze was chilly ... read more

Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749For such a bookish group of travelers, our Trinity College visit was such such a thrill today! Attended by Jonathan Swift and Oscar Wilde, the college also houses the Book of Kells which is a collection of the four gospels of the Bible. Monks over 1000 years ago printed the Bible on vellum (calf skin from nearly 200 calves) and created painstaking illustrations using colored paints made from plants, lapis lazuli, and crushed bugs. The reds, golds, and blues that have survived these thousand years really are the richest hues still today. Then we entered the Long Room in the college library which is home to 200,000 volumes of books. The high arched ceiling and the aisles of volumes smelling of leather and time commanded an air of reverence while marble busts of Shakespeare, ... read more

Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749First up this morning was the Blarney Castle visit. After a brief narrative introduction by Andras, our tour guide, we had 3 hours to discover the castle on our own. Some groups ascended the tight spiral stone staircase to kiss the Blarney Stone in hopes of securing everlasting love and the gift of the gab, while others were content to view the castle from the outside and stuck to the acres of gardens. Many enjoyed ice cream or chocolate treats before climbing back aboard the tour bus. To break up our afternoon journey into Dublin we made two other stops at castles which are as common to Ireland as glaciers are to Banff NP. "Oh there's a castle. Oh there's another one! Look, a castle!" There were creeks to scramble around, old stone bridges, ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Killarney June 19th 2015

Geo: 52.0579, -9.50747Today we toured the Ring of Kerry which afforded quintessential Irish views of the rocky green landscape and grey coast of the North Atlantic. Our bus driver Connie fittingly accompanied our drive with a CD of Celtic music and bagpipes. Sheep and cows dotted the hillsides and everywhere we looked was green green green. Our first stop along the Ring was the beach! Even in spite of the chilly breeze we loved combing the beach for shells and pebbles in the softest shades of red and green. The students recovered crab legs and mollusks, kelp and jellyfish. Our next brief stop was a roadside overlook for a short but steep hike up a grassy hill side. While much fog clung to the mountains and hovered around the bay, we still could make out the foam ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Clare » Shannon June 18th 2015

Geo: 52.7107, -8.87897After our flight to Chicago and a six hour layover, we boarded our international flight for Ireland. It was a short night at 35,000 feet and we landed in Shannon excited and ready for the adventure to begin! We were greeted by our tour director Andras who pointed out essential airport features to begin our trip successfully including the restrooms, the nearest ATM, and places to buy bottled water and snacks for breakfast. Then we boarded the bus and set out for Killarney, the quaintest Irish town with multi-colored storefronts, Celtic crests visible in shop windows, and street performers and musicians to add to the bustling scene. Fresh air and sunshine did their best to keep our jet lag at bay and we even enjoyed a horse drawn buggy ride around the city and ... read more

Geo: 43.5807, 7.12087Traveling is fun for so many reasons...seeing places where the water is bluer or the mountains are higher; speaking to people in a different language and realizing that their story is not that dissimilar from your own; learning about a new perspective of the world through original art or architecture that you couldn't have learned from a video documentary. But there always comes a point for Sean and for me in any vacation when we are ready to return home. I think we reached that point today. We took our final day trip from Nice today to the city of Antibes. It is reputed for its Billionaire Bay where some of the richest people in the world moor their private yachts while visiting the area, for its sandy beaches (Nice's are all stones), and ... read more

Geo: 43.7405, 7.42543The fact is, the city streets of Nice are anything but nice. It reeks of urine (from people or pets, it matters little) , and if you're not smelling toilet, you're getting accosted by second-hand cigarette smoke. And what's worse, dogs poop all over the sidewalks without any apparent law against it so you're either hopping over steaming piles of poo at the last second, or sidestepping smears where people have tried in vain to clean their shoes. We have new found appreciation for the municipal laws in Meridian requiring people clean up after their pets. Yuck! OK, onto the better events of the day...It was a day of contrasts between old and new, quaint and extravagnt.
