Today was only a 30 km drive but a slow 3 hrs down to the Tibet/Nepal border town of Zhangmu (previously known as Dram). For the second day we continued down the Sun Kosi Gorge dropping a further 1300 mths for a combined 2800 mtrs over 95kms of winding road and continuous hairpin turns and dramatic dropaways. Today I had the co-drivers seat which was the best seat in the house although some of the dropaways were hold on to the seat of your pants stuff and evidence of broken barrier guards where some vehicles didnt make it. The outlook changes from frozen, barren, desolate Tibetan Plateau to a humid sub-tropical, dense, evergreen forest filled with waterfalls & a fast running river running through the gorge. The similarity of the rapid change reminded me of the ... read more

Despite 10 days of acclimatisation almost all the group had some degree of breathlessness, headaches and lack of sleep last night. While cold there was ample bedding to stay walm with the problem due to very hard beds, difficulty breathing at the altitude & only squat loos 3 floors up. Despite this waking to a clear sunrise was some compensation for the discomfort. The day ahead was another 240 km over 8 hrs. We had to retrace the corrugated road down the mtn back to the highway, a juddering 60 kms over 3.5 hrs but still a suitable time to reflect on a wonderful experience, while not life changing, it will still be remembered for the rest of our life. The rest of the trip was still substantially at altitude with our last pass (Lalong La ... read more

The things we do for adventure! We had a 5am wakeup for a 6.40 start in order to get to Everest Base Camp (EBC) as soon as possible before the normal afternoon clouds rolled in. At the 1st of many police checks the weather forecast was listed as minus 6c & plus 12c, regardless everyone was excited. The trip of 120 km was slow with normal highway speed for the 1st half but the last 60 kms very slow winding 1 lane cobbled side road up to the top of the 5200 mtr Pang La Pass with an amazing sweeping view of the Himalaya Mountains. The weather continued to be fine & we were blessed with a perfectly clear day with views of Everest and many of the lesser known peaks of the Himalaya’s. Along the ... read more

Weather is very stable at present with another cloudless deep blue sky on offer before some light cloud rolling in as usual in the afternoons. Today was another slow but interesting 7.5 hr 240 km drive to Shegar inside the Everest Nature Reserve. The route initially passed through small farming villages but quickly turned to barren rocky hills on either side of the road all the while gently climbing first to a peak of 4500 mtrs before dropping down again only to climb an even higher pass of 5200 mtrs. A 1000 mtr climb for the day. While the outlook was still rugged & remote the scene was changing as we rose the 2nd peak. Large patches of icy snow lay in sheltered areas and covered most of the rocky river bed with a tiny but ... read more

Another cloudless blue sky & a little walmer than yesterday. Just need it to hold out for a few more days. I thought I was all templed out but today we visited the famous Tashilhunpo Buddhist Monastery in Shigatse & l was really impressed. Founded in 1447 by the 1st Dalai Lama the monastery expanded & by the time of the fifth Dalai the abbot of Tashilhunpo became known as the Panchen Lama (literally the ‘Great Scholar’). Since then the monastery became the principal site of the Panchen sect. During the Cultural Revolution much of the Tashilhunpo and the nearby fort were destroyed, but have since been rebuilt. Inside 3 of the many temples & stupas were amazing. The Maitreya (future) Temple is a recent addition & holds a enormous 30 mtr gold-gilded bronze statue of ... read more

Woke to another clear blue sky day but a chilly7c. Gyantse is a remarkable place in that it has escaped much of the Chinese influence evident in other major Tibetan towns. High on a hill the town is dominated by the recently rebuilt replica of an ancient fort (Shigatse Dzong). The fort was besieged by British forces in 1904 during the famous Younghusband Expedition which was essentially an invasion. We also visited the octagonal shaped Kumbum Stupa built in 1444 inside the Gyantse Monastery & founded by the 1st Punchen Lama. The Monastery was vast but has been significantly destroyed. It is now only sparsely occupied & somewhat rundown but it original grandure is evident with the extent of the frescos on all the walls. Shigatse is only 95 km from Gyantse but still a 2.5 ... read more

Awoke today with a clear blue sky & was the start of our drive on the Freedom Hwy a fantastic piece of engineering built about 10 yrs ago. The drive was a slow but spectacular 8 hr 260 km trip to Gyangtse driving down the Kyi- chu Valley along the Yarlong Tsampo river canyon (deepest canyon in the world) before ascending the Khamba La Pass at 4900m. Looking from the summit were outstanding views of the vast freshwater Yamdrok Tso or Turquoise Lake on one side and the snow-capped Himalayan ranges and receding glaciers on the other. We crossed two other passes around 5000 mtrs each with a decent of about 1000 mtrs which is the level for our night stop at Gyantse. This up & down method is apparently a good way to avoid altitude ... read more

Asia » China » Tibet » Lhasa April 15th 2015

Two full days in Lhasa, also know as the "Forbidden City" due until recently its inaccessibility. While now a large city,Lhasa only has a small Tibetan Quarter renowned for its temples & monasteries in and around the ancient Barkhor Street. The street is round with tiny alleyways off to the side and surrounds the Jokhang Temple (sacred to Tibetan Buddhists) and is a place full of religious atmosphere with prostrating pilgrims and a world of exotic trading. The inside of Jokhang is incrediably ornate & inspiring with endless numbers of devotees following rituals that are difficult to understand. No photos allowed. On a hill overlooking Lhasa & Barkhor Street the skyline is dominated by the Potala Palace (meaning Nirvana), historically the home of all the Dalai Lamas. The palace was built in 2 stages. Happy New Year!! Apparently it is 2072 in Hindu Nepal. If today was happy, I would hate to experience a sad day. A 1 hour plane ride took 9 hrs + 2 hrs time loss difference to get from Kathmandu to Lhasa due to very slow clearance through border security at both ends + a backlog of delayed flights. No food between early breakfast & dinner. The flight views over the Himilayas can be spectacular but today was cloudy & regardless nothing to see from the middle section of the plane. Lhasa sits at 3650 meters with considerably less oxygen in the air but surprisingly no noticeable change in breathing. Decided not to take Diamox based on previous altitude experience seemed like a good decision. Arrival in Lhasa was a massive contrast compared to Kmd. Cool, ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Pashupatinath Temple April 13th 2015

Today was the start of our tour group with a half day tour around some of the historical sites around Kathmandu. Not a good start to the day with light rain falling & then found i'd left my camera in the room. Then we found our guide for the day was difficult to understand so I tended to turn off listening. First stop was Pashupatinatinath site including a sacred temple for both Hindus & buddhists. As it is based alongside the Bagmati river it is also the main site for funeral services with 3 funerals occurring including one funeral pyre well alight. All the while monkeys are running amock & so called holy men posing for photos for a small fee. No photos as I left camera in room but still not sure what to make ... read more
