DAY 8 Set the alarm early to catch the sunrise & unusually had to be woken from a deep sleep. Sadly did not happen! - too much cloud. Today's program was a day trip to Tierra del Fuego National Park (translated means Land of Fires - so named by one of the early explorers who observed many native camp fires on the lower side of the Beagle Channel when passing (who wouldn't need a fire when getting around naked). The park was established to prevent the wholesale clearing of timber. Access is limited to the picturesque lakes area around the entrance with 4 small walks between 4-8 km's & mostly moderate exertion. We are both looking fwd to more challenging walks later on in the trip. Tierra del Fuego island is split between Argentina & Chile ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia February 25th 2014

DAY 7 Just caught the end of an unbelievable sunrise! No time to take a photo so hopefully will repeat tomorrow. This morning we cruised by catamaran along the Beagle Channel dotted with many rocky island outcrops each supporting a huge range of wildlife. The trip was incredibly scenic & the weather very kind (sunny patches, about 14 deg., and a very slight tail wind. Our first stop was a safe haven for hundreds of resting cormorants and other seabirds. Next stop was a fur seal colony and finally a penguin island (magellanic & gantoo) and quite incredibly 2 king emperor penguins which are way outside their normal Antarctic environment. We cruised on to the Harberton Estancia (ranch) formally a famous working ranch in an area originally settled by Welsh sheep farmers. The farm is now ... read more

DAY 6 DAY 6 Today we flew to Ushuaia the most southerly town in Argentina at 55 degrees south. Forecast to be cooler than the last few days at 15c but not bad with sunny breaks between the cloud and wind less than expected. First impressions "Ushuaia is not the prettiest town I have seen" due to rapid growth subsidised by the govt but without any extra infrastructure finance or much planning. That said it is surrounded by magnificent views of the snow caped Andes to the west, Tierra del Fuego to the south and the pristine waters of the Beagle Channel, named after the ship in which Charles Darwin sailed in 1832 and led to his now famous theories. No formal activities this afternoon and we wandered along the two main streets of the town ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Valdes Peninsula February 23rd 2014

DAY 5 Much better sleep last night, hopefully our bodies have adjusted to the local timezone. Despite the amazing land based Eco systems we experienced yesterday, it's the unique marine environment and it's World Heritage listing that attracts visitors to the Valdes Peninsula. While Patagonia is remote in itself the Peninsula is further protected with all land access via a narrow Isthmus (7 Km's wide) which splits the waters of two gulfs. Being so close one would think that the Eco systems of these waters would be very similar however this is far from the case. The peninsula is the meeting place of warm waters moving south from Brazil with cold water moving north from Antarctica and they crash together dropping vast amounts of nutrients which attracts and sustains migrating whales (Southern Right), orcas, dolphins, elephant ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Trelew February 22nd 2014

DAY 4 Jet lag kicked in today with 1 hr sleep before midnight only to get back to sleep for another hr before our alarm woke us again at 5 am to catch a taxi to the airport. Meet our fellow travellers at Trelew airport after a 2 hr flight from Buenos Aires to start our tour of Patagonia. Dynamics seem ok. 3 other couples (I Anglo/French, 1 Canadian & 2 Aust all similar to our age). Boarded our own mini bus with guide (Marta) and headed 110 km south to Punta Tombo Reserve, the largest Magellan penguin colony on the continent. It was amazing to be able to walk through the trails and around the nests of the more than five hundred thousand Magellanic penguins that gather each year in the colony along with many ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 21st 2014

Day 3 We always thought that a 3 month trip would be filled with highs and lows and hopefully not too many lows but unfortunately we met with our first scarey experience today when some people tried to rob/mug us. We had a another full day of walking, our B & B is surrounded by every shopping outlet brand name known to man & Ruth managed to pass them all without entry. We passed through the cosmopolitan Palermo area with lots of cafés and restaurants intending to reach the upmarket Recoleta area with the wealthiest streets in BA. After feeling very safe yesterday we were almost robbed today, we were down near the zoo entrance taking a photo when I thought a bird had done its business all over me. I felt & saw a greenish ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 20th 2014

Day 2 Topped up the B&B's Sube underground credit card to take a trip into town. Each trip costs P3.50 (approx $0.50) regardless of the length. If only so cheap back home! Considering the number of busses we will be taking over the next few months a minor head to tail crash between 2 buses was sobering (one of 3 accidents we saw today!) they seem to drive fast and furious over here and as a pedestrian you have to be very alert to get across the road. Not much of a plan to start our day due to an inadequate map. Started to get the feel of the downtown area with a decent map from the info bureau. A tour of the famed French Renaissance style opera house (Teatro Colon) was a highlight. We got ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 19th 2014

Expect long day flying to start our trip. Early flight to Sydney then Qantas to Santiago with 3 hour stop before next flight to Buenos Aires. Expectations proved correct. Nearly 24 hrs from door to door. Kieran was up much earlier than normal (5.20 am) to take us to the airport. Thanks k. Arrived safely & not too tired after a few catnaps along the way. Pushed ourselves to stay up a little longer with a quick orientation around the B&B for a supermarket. A snack for dinner with complimentary mini bottles of wine from Qantas seemed to do the trick. Ruth was snoring as soon as head hit the pillow. Unusually I took longer but both had deep early sleeps. Jetlag not to bad. Off to explore BA.... read more
