Geo: 50.1183, -122.954On Saturday, March 4, 2017, I drove toWhistler, British Columbia to participate in the “DiscoverBobsleigh” activity that was being offered by the Whistler SlidingCenter. During this activity the participants are given basicinstruction on how to pilot a two person bobsleigh and how to operatethe brakes. Then it is off to the Olympic ice track, the fastest inthe world, for two runs down the track from the lower starting point– one run as the pilot and one run as the brakeman. Here is adescription of the “Discover Bobsleigh” activity (temporarily off line):http://www.whistlerslidingcentre.com/community-sport/sport-programs-camps/discover-bobsleigh-introductory-clinics-20162017My interest in bobsleigh goes back toat least 1987. This visit was an event sponsored by the LondonCultureseekers Group – meetup group with an astonishing number ofmembers: nearly 24,000. The organizer is a young Londoner namedRobert who, with the energy of the Energizer rabbit, single handedlyorganizes about fifteen events a month. Since 2012 I have visitedBletchley Park, St Paul's Cathedral, the Imperial War Museum, theScience Museum...with his group. His events typically end at a pubwhere there is lots of friendly conversation. Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Nov. 14 – 19: Sherlock Holmes, Cinema MuseumNovember 14, MondayNatural History Museum, Imperial War MuseumI visited two museums today. The firstwas the Natural History Museum where the main attraction was “Dippy”- a diplodocus dinosaur that greets people at the main entrance tothe museum. The actual bones of this dinosaur are on display at amuseum in Pittsburgh PA. What one sees here is a casting of the boneswhich was commissioned by Andrew Carnegie as a gift to King EdwardVII. It went on display in 1905 and has thrilled visitors since thatyear. Unfortunately Dippy will replaced by a blue whale skeleton nextyear so I wanted to see this lengthy center piece item before it isput into storage somewhere. The dinosaur display was quiteinformative (e.g. placement of legs as it impacts mobility and speedof each type of ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Nov 9 – 13: Remembrance Day, Lord MayorNovember 9, WednesdayBritish MuseumThe British Museum is a world class institution that is dedicated to the study of human history, art, and culture. It houses perhaps the largest collection in the world with eight million objects in it inventory. Because I had spent a full day exploring the British Museum on my 2014 visit to London I focused on a temporary exhibit titled "Sunken Cities" which was about two major port cities in Egypt which sank into the Mediterranean Sea around 300 AD due to liquefaction of the silts on which they were built following earth tremors. The underwater ruins were not discovered until the 1990s. Here is a description of the exhibition copied from the British Museum's website:"Vanished beneath the waters of the Mediterranean, the lost ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Nov. 6 – 8: Abbey Road, Records and Rebels 1966-1970November 6, SundayOne thing I would have liked to havedone was attend a Premier League football match. Unfortunately, theseare normally played on a Saturday, and my two Saturdays were alreadybooked. For a few minutes I had a glimmer of hope: a match betweenArsenal (London) and Tottenham (London) was scheduled for thisSunday. This hope was short lived: the only tickets for sale werethose on the secondary market, and the least expensive ticket waspriced around $225. This wasn't worth it to me so I ended up at anearby pub and watched the match with a group of peer aged men andonly had to pay $6 for two bottles of Beck's non-alcohol beer. That evening I meet another tour guidefrom London Walks who lead the group through East London ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236November 3 – 5: Guy Fawkes Day in LewesNovember 3, ThursdayLanded at Heathrow and made my way towhat would be my home for the next two weeks. This was theInternational House of the University of Westminster, a universityresidence hall located in the Lambeth borough of London. It is in theSouthwark area not too far from the Lambeth North (temporarilyclosed) and the Waterloo underground and train stations and theLondon Eye. I stayed in the same facility back in 2012 whileattending the Summer Olympic Games. The neighborhood is off thetourist radar, and the residence hall is across the street from theImperial War Museum which is my most favorite museum in London.November 4, FridayThe morning was spent walking throughthe government district in Westminster; you know: Big Ben, 10 DowningStreet... Geo: 54.9976, -7.32062Belfast Day 3 (April 1)The day was spent on a side trip toDerry (or Londonderry in Protestant circles) which is about two hoursfrom Belfast by bus. This is the city where the infamous “BloodySunday” massacre took place on January 30, 1972. Approximately10,000 Catholics were participating in a civil rights march modeledafter the marches they had seen taking place in America's South.British paratroopers were hidden along the parade route and, forwhatever reason, open fired on the marchers. Twenty six marchers wereshot by the troopers of which fourteen died. Two marchers were rundown by army vehicles. The jumping point for this day wasGuildhall (010) – an impressive building at the center of the city. While waiting for the tour guide to appear I went inside the buildingfor a look around. There was an exhibition titled “The Pl... read more

Geo: 54.5973, -5.93019Belfast Day 2 (March 31)On this day I took a walking tour ofthe Falls Road area lead by Robert, a former member of the IRA whospent twelve years in prison. This was advertised (and also mentionedin the Rick Steves book) as a three hour walk but it fact it lastedfour and one-half hours. Robert's past membership in the IRA and hiscurrent work for Sinn Fein has given him lots of street creed: itseems like every driver of a black taxi and every person over fiftyyears gave him the high sign as our group walked along the street. We met at Divis Tower – a twentystory apartment building located at the edge of Falls Road (000). Thetop two stories of the building has been used by the British army asan observation post. Because there were ten ... read more

Geo: 54.5973, -5.93019Belfast Day 1 (March 30)At 9:00 am sharp Ken Harper (010), aBelfast tour guide, picked me up from my hotel for a taxi cab tour ofthe working class Catholic neighborhood and working class Protestantneighborhood where much of the violence of the Troubles of the 1970s,80s, and 90s took place. The Troubles was a sectarian conflict thatdrew in troops of the British empire and which resulted in 3,000deaths. Mr. Harper, with his black London style taxi, is highlyrecommended by Rick Steves in his Ireland guide book because hedoesn't take sides on this conflict which other guides might do.On the way to Falls Road, the main roadthrough the Catholic neighborhood (aka Republican meaning a proponentof a unified Ireland that has no ties with England) I asked Ken if heknow of a laundromat where I could wash ... read more

Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749Dublin Day 6 (March 29)This is my last day in Dublin. Themorning was spent taking a tour of the 1916 sites by bus. There were at least four companies that provided Rising bus tours, and today wasthe only date on which I could reserve a spot; like the other placesin the city there was much demand for the bus tours. (020)The approach that this particular bustour company took was to have a male and a female performer act outwhat was in the minds of some participants of the Rising as the busdrove from one important site to another. We would get off the bus atcertain stops (Saint Stephen's Green, Dublin Castle) to hear whathappened at that particular site.
