Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Hi all:I am midway through my vacation and haven't been posting much material. I apologize for this: many of my days have been long and exhausting so sitting down and composing a blog gets put aside. This should bring everything up to date:Wednesday, July 25I arrived in London at 9:00 am after having left Seattle at 12 noon the previous day. I transported seventy pounds of luggage to my hotel in Victoria using the subway. Big mistake. The Underground is not designed for users who are carrying heavy loads. It is hard to find an elevator if one event exists at a station. It makes me cringe whenever I see a single parent with a baby carriage going up and down the long stairwells. Only the kindness of strangers makes this a safe endeavor. ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236During my first week in LondonI not only saw a revival of one of the best films about the Olympic Games butalso attended a performance of a recently opened stage play that is based onthat film. On July 13 a digitally remastered version of the 1981 Oscar winner "Chariotsof Fire" was released throughout the United Kingdom to boost enthusiasm for the Olympic Games. This film tells the true story of two UKathletes who competed at the 1924 Olympic Games that were held in Paris. One athlete, Harold Abrahams, overcame religious prejudice that was prevalentat that time and fought against the strict code of amateurism that discouragedthe use of professional coaches. The other athlete, Eric Liddell, placed hisreligious convictions over the wishes of the British Olympic Committee and ofhis future king, the Duke of Windsor, by refusing ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Here are observations about my first 12 hours in London. My first six hours is more accurate when one takes into account my travel time from the airport to my hotel and the long nap I took to offset nearly twenty hours without sleep. It is hard to believe that Londoners, let alone visitors, can navigate this city given its lack of street signs. In Seattle virtually every intersection has one or two posts on which are mounted signs that indicate the street and avenue. After several hours of walking around the high end Knightsbridge, Sloan Square, and South Kensington neighborhoods I did not see a single intersection where this type of post was present. At best there was a street name posted on the side of a building, and this occurred about once every ... read more

Geo: 47.4323, -121.803Because the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver/Whistler were so much fun I decided in early 2011 to attend the 2012 Summer Olympic Games (XXX Olympiad) that will take place in London from July 27 to August 12. This will probably be the most user-friendly Olympics for the duration of my life for the following reasons:(1) No language problem(2) No culture shock(3) Takes place in a temperate climate(4) Lots of things to do when not attending Olympic competitions(5) Believe it or not this might be the most affordable Olympics in the near future despite the fact that London is a really expensive place(6) The local transportation infrastructure has been in place for many years which will make getting to venues somewhat easyThere is a feeling in the sports community that this might be the ... read more
