Day 26 August 8 Traveled 520 miles to McBride, BC We are off the ferry and in the Old Ford F250 again. We made it almost across British Columbia. We would have made it to Alberta, but a very beautiful rainbow led us to a campground in McBride, BC. The rainbow made a perfect arc over this nice little town. We stopped and took a bunch of photos of the rainbow and are spending the night under the rainbow, or where it was. It was again cloudy and rainy most of the day, until the rainbow came out. Maybe it’s a sign of a sunny day tomorrow. It would be great if we could drive through Jasper and Banff National Parks tomorrow with the sun out. BC has lots of mountains and trees. Unfortunately many of ... read more

Will add some more photos at a later date. Day 21 August 3 Traveled about 250 miles. Staying at Tolsona Wilderness Campground. This is the same campground we stayed at on July 28th. It is a very nice place and would highly recommend it to any Alaska travelers. It’s 13 miles west of Glennallen and the owners are friends of Karen and Gary. Our drive today took us through the Anchorage area. We made a quick stop to re-provision our expedition. We continue to be amazed at all the mountains. It’s hard to drive anywhere in the State and not see mountains. Managed to pick up 3 geocaches along the way. One was at the top of a bluff that took some climbing to get too. Of course I forgot to take my camera with to ... read more

The adventures of Big Al and the Geoose in Alaska got lost by our friends at TravelBlog.com. Their server crashed and all is lost. Fortunately we have copies of most of the blogs. Here are days 7-20. We will publish some photos when we have a chance. Day 7 July 20 340 miles Traveled - Camped at Takhini Hot Springs last night and took another hot bath. We had a good cold rain shower while we where in the hot springs. That cooled us down a bit. The first stop today on the Klondike Trail was at "Moms Bakery". Mom has great buns, that is cinnamon buns. Mon is known for her cinnamon buns all over the Yukon. Came across several wrecks during our drive. A motorcycle pulling a small trailer went off the road when ... read more

Day 16 July 29 Traveled about 130 miles to Valdez, Sea Otter RV Park We started the day with a good breakfast at the Caribou Lodge in Glennallen; one of Karen and Gary’s favorite places. We stopped at the Wrangell St. Elias National Park Visitors Center. This is a new and very nice visitors center. This is the largest National Park in the US. It’s 6 times larger than Yellowstone. It has 6 of the 10 tallest mountains in the US. It is very remote with only 2 roads that penetrate the park a short distance. We will probably visit the park later in our journey. We stopped at Copper Center, an old mining area, and visited the Museum. We also checked out the Klutina River to see if the red salmon were running. We ... read more

Day 4 July 17 482 miles taveled Out of the grain fields and into the spruce forests. Got onto the Alaskan Highway at Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Spent the night at a campground with a bunch of French Canadian pipeline construction workers. They are finding lots of natural gas in the area and will be piping some it our way. We also met a young couple from Green Bay and a couple of old geezers, like you know who, from Iowa at the camp ground. Also had a slight mishap with the laptop computer. A Geoose set it on a lawn chair when he went to get a beverage. He came back and sat on the computer and it hasn't worked since. Will be using Library services along the way until I find someone to fix ... read more

Creamed peas and new potatoes from the garden with mom’s baked beans and Wisconsin brats and beer filled us up. We camped next to the barn where Wayne milked his last cow about 40 years ago. Wild life count - 3 white tail deer and 2 dead cats. We have some basic plans, but places and times may change. Our departure place and time are firm. Wayne (Geoose) and Big Al leave Baraboo, Wisconsin July 14, 2007. Will stop in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota the first night. Need to visit Mom and sister Karen and brother in-law Gary. Karen and Gary are ex-Alaskans and will tell us where some of the good fishing holes are in the Glennallen area. We then will drive thru North Dakota and cross the boarder north of Minot. Then to Moose Jaw, Sk and on to the yellow Head highway 16 to Saskatoon and then Edmonton. Somewhere north of Edmonton we will maybe end up on the Alaskan Highway. May go to Dawson, Yukon and then to Fairbanks. (3,500 miles total) Several days at Denali are a must, then ... read more

TRAVELERS -Geoose (Wayne) and Big Al (Al) are long time friends who served their Country together, in the US Army. It was the late 60's and they were fortunate enough to not be sent across the big pond to SE Asia. After being stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC for most of their tour, they both were honorably discharged in 1969 and sent into the world of civilians. Geoose settled in Wisconsin and Big Al in Illinois where they still reside. After many years, almost 40, of hunting and fishing trips together a suggestion of a road trip to Alaska was made. Both thought it would be a great trip. Karen and Maria will miss their wilderness travelers, but with modern technology, including this blog, they will know where their guys ... read more

To become aquainted with the Travelblog and learn how to use it I will publish several of our previous trips. In September 2005, Karen, Amber and Wayne loaded up the old pickup camper and headed west to Glacier National Park and other places west of the Mississippi. Our first stop was in Detroit Lakes, MN. to visit Mom Gjersvig and sister and brother-in-law; Karen and Gary. The next day we drove to Western North Dakota and stayed at Teddy Roosevelt National Park (Northern Section). This is Bad Land country. We continued west into Big Sky country. Teddy Roosevelt Visited Ft. Peck dam and reservoir. (I wish I had my boat with). Found a very nice RV park in Havre for a good night's rest. Arrived Glacier in time to get a camp site at Sunrise camp ... read more
