Day 5 Tyrell Bay Carriaou, Grenada March 9/ 2009 We dingied into shore and caught a bus to Hillsborough to check out of Grenada. We needed to do the immigration and customs just like leaving any country. I found a free wifi area at the local telephone sales office. That is where you got the last blog from. We picked up a few more provisions and headed back to the boat for a noon departure. We motored into the wind for 10 miles to Cliffton on Union Island where the skipper had to check us in at St Vincent immigrations and customs. Joe and Luke did some snorkeling near our anchorage and came back with some neat conch shells. Wayne and Rick took a swim off the boat and lathered down with soap. We are getting ... read more

Grenada Day 1 March 5, 2009 Wayne and Rick arrived at 5:30 AM at Point Saline International Airport on the island country of Grenada. Stepping off the plane into 76 degree temp was a little shock after Wisconsin winter. Air was heavy and it was hard to breath. Got thru customs and immigration without a problem. Took a taxi to True Blue Resort and Marina where Horizon Yacht Charters is located. The sun had just come up and at 6:30 AM. We didn’t know if our sailing buddies would appreciate early morning visitors. I walked down the docks and found a Verensia catamaran. I went back and got Rick and our luggage and went back to the cat. We started loading our gear on board when Skipper Kent stuck his head out of the hatch and ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Grenada February 21st 2009

It's time to get out of the cold Midwest and go sailing in the Caribbean. Sailing friend, Skipper Kent has arranged a sailing cruise for March 5-15, 2009. The crew will be made up of 2 of Kent's friends, myself and my good BBYC sailing buddy Rick. The boat is a Venesia 42 catamaran chartered from Horizon Yacht Charters out of Grenada. Boat Link Grenada is located in the Southern Caribbean about 100 miles from Venezuela. We plan to sail North to St. Vincent and stop at islands along the way. Should be a great trip. Will try to add a few blogs along the way if I can find an internet connection.... read more

May 25, 2008 Wabasha, MN to Winona, MN, 37 miles, Crew Brad G. We had a small thunder shower last night. Glad the wind didn’t change directions since we had 20 miles of open lake (Lake Pepin) to our North. Brad and I raised anchor at 8:00 am and motored to Wabasha, MN. We pumped out (our waste tank) and got some ice. Didn’t see any Grumpy Old Men. The wind was from the South East at 15 knots, but we hoisted a reefed main sail anyway. The sailed added a couple more knots of speed as we motor sailed down Old Man River. We locked through 3 locks during the day with no waiting. Met a large barge coming up River at Fountain City. It was a narrow part of the channel, but we were ... read more

May 19, 2008 Baraboo/Tomah, WI to Bayport, MN and Maple Grove, MN via 1984 F-250 Ford truck Harold and I made it to Lake St. Croix without any problems. We ended up going to Bayport, MN where there are a number of marinas. We found a good ramp at the Beach House marina. The City of Bayport charges $10 for launching and $10 a night for parking a vehicle. WE started stepping the mast and found out that the port spreader was broken. We found Roehegers welding shop about 3 miles from the marina. They had the spreader welded in about 30 min. It began raining and sleeting so we decided to wait until the next day to launch. We drove over to Maple Grove and spent the night at Harold’s son, Mike’s home. May 20, ... read more

It’s time to do some traveling on the water. Captain Wayne and crew, brother Harold, will be taking a cruise. We plan to launch S/V Amber Lee II on the St. Croix River near Stillwater, MN on May 19th, enter the Mississippi at Prescott, WI and sail, and motor, down the Mighty Mississippi to La Crosse, WI. This adventure will begin before we hit the water, when we trailer the 27 ft ODay sail boat from Baraboo, WI 200 miles up I94 to our launch site. The old Ford will have to work to pull a 3 1/2 ton load. I have e-mailed a number of marinas to find out about launching facilities and a place to leave the truck and trailer. No replies yet, but that wont discourage us from heading out. We are also ... read more

We ended our last blog arriving at Cape Hatteras. We went to see Cape Hatteras lighthouse, then went to the beach and watched kite surfers. Check “kite surfing” out on google if you want to see what a wild sport it is. The next morning, the 13th, we continued north on the Outer Banks and managed to drive out on the beach again, without getting stuck in the sand. We drove through Nag’s Head, another Wisconsin Dells type area. We then checked out Orville and Wilber Wright’s first flight National Historical site at Kitty Hawk. We ended up driving through Norfolk, Virginia and stayed in Newport News, VA that evening. We had planned to go to Williamsburg the next morning, but found out that the National Maritime museum is in Newport News so we went there ... read more

Week 1 of retirement I better make an entry in the “Headed South” blog before we start north for home. Left sunny Wisconsin on April 6th and arrived in Atlanta on the afternoon of the 8th. (Happy birthday Harold!) Southern Indiana and Kentucky looked very wet. Even had to ford a small creek with the Jeep when we stopped to pick up our Indiana geocache. We stayed with Kim and Bruce, Karen’s sister and brother in-law in the Atlanta area for 2 nights. Karen’s Brother, Terry also stopped over to visit. Our recreational activities included visiting the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History that celebrated the “Great Locomotive Chase”. We also visited Agnes Scott College where Karen’s niece, Caitlin attends. It’s an all women’s college. It is a beautiful campus and they serve great ... read more

It has been a while since Karen and I have taken a trip together. Wayne needs a break between 38 years of work and retirement. We will be driving to Atlanta, Georgia to visit Karen's Brother and sister and families. We then plan to head for the South Carolina coast. If the weather is warm we will drive North To the North Carolina Outer Islands. If it looks like cool temperatures we may go south to Florida.... read more
