Oct 30 Day 13 Layover in Demopolis, AL We slept in and then did laundry this morning. It’s warm and muggy. The forecast for this afternoon is for thunder storms and a lot of rain. A good day to stay put. We were invited for cocktails on Sparkies Dream at 5:00 PM. We were joined by 2 additional Canadian couples who are cruising south. The Pinacoladas were great and a good time was had by all. We eat dinner at the New Orleans Bar and Grill located at the Marina. Critter Count: Hundreds of small ants made there way unto the boat. A whole string of them were found crawling up one of our mooring lines to find the good food aboard Amber Lee. Other boats had the same problem so a trip to town for ... read more

Oct 28 Day 11 380 miles down, 270 miles to go. We have joined up with another sail boat which is traveling about the same speed as we are. Sharpies Dream is a 32 ft Bayfield cutter and is from the North Channel on Lake Ontario. Pat and Dianne left on there trip around Sept 1. They sold their home and are headed for the Bahamas. They will make further plans when they get that far. We covered 65 miles today, all under motor power. That’s the most distance we have traveled in one day. The little 10 HP Westerbeke diesel engine just keeps on chugging. We have been burning about 2 gallons of fuel per day. Some of the power boats that have been passing us burn that much in 15 minutes. We rafted with ... read more

Oct 25 Day 8 237 miles down,413 to go Rick’s detailed description of a typical day on the water onboard Amber Lee II: We woke at 6:00 am. Rick put on the coffee and Wayne put in load of laundry with hopes that it would be done by 8:30 am departure time. We discussed the days plan over coffee. It was very foggy which made a question, will we be able to see by 8:30 am? We had our breakfast which consisted of a bowl of cereal and banana. After breakfast I folded the laundry, got ice from the ship store, paid the slip bill and fuel charges. Wayne cleaned up the galley and did misc. to prepare for departure. Wayne warmed up the diesel, I took care of dock lines as we prepared to depart. ... read more

Oct 21 Day 4 on the water We woke up to another cool crisp day. We planned on leaving early, but were enticed to stay for complementary fresh warm cinnamon rolls. Glad we did, for they were delicious. We fueled up with 3 gals diesel and pumped out the holding tank and headed out on the river. We managed to sail for about 1 hour, but with light winds from the south we motored most of the day. We crossed under Interstate 40 around noon. We are basically out of Kentucky Lake now. It looks like a wide river at this point. The river depth is 40-60 feet deep. Later in the day we motored through a gorge with high rock cliffs. Arrived at our first anchorage, Lick Creek, at 5:30 pm., about 200 yards of ... read more

Oct 18 Day 9 There was frost on the sail cover this morning. I think it’s time to get farther South. The weather was cool but pleasant today. Rick played the National Anthem on his harmonica as Wayne raised the Stars and Stripes as we entered Kentucky Lake. We had sunshine and a light north - northwest -northeast breeze all afternoon. Just enough wind to fly Rick’s gennaker and sail much of the 20 miles to Kenlake State Park and Marina. We decided to stay at a marina so we can plug in our little heater to stay warm for another night. We aren’t quite ready for the cold after our stay in Alabama. We were provided a ride to the park lodge by a park ranger where we had a big turkey dinner with all ... read more

Oct 15 Day 6 Today we were able to get a ride on a spectator boat to watch the racing up close. The racers had a good wind and that made for a rough ride in the power boat we were in. I can hardly wait to get back on a sail boat. There was lots of excitement on the starting line; as you can see from the photos. When you have 30 boats starting it can get a little nuts. After the 3 races were done, our favorite boat, Peter Pan, was in 6th place overall. A nice day of racing. After the race we were invited to a dinner party hosted by one of the Club members on their patio. There were over 100 people at the party. Some more great generous Southern Hospitality. ... read more

Oct 11 Day 2 We found the Green Turtle Marina after driving around Grand Rivers, Kentucky for a while. We spent most of the day raising the mast and launching Amber Lee. The marina office is on a floating dock. We have a slip 20 feet from the office, lounge area and shower facilities. We have already met a number of cruisers. Everyone is very friendly; want to know where you came from, where you are going and what type of boat you have. We met people from Ontario, Michigan and Ohio. Many of these people are “Loopers”. Great Loop We are the only ones around that trailered their boat to this place. Everyone else has spent weeks or months getting this far South. Question of the Day - What is the name of the river ... read more

Oct 10, 2009 Day 1 - Just want to let everyone know we are actually on our way. Left Baraboo the first time at 6:30 AM this morning. When Wayne realized he forgot some of his cloths on a hanger we turned around and went back. We should have checked that list one more time before we left. We departed for the second time at 6:50 AM. It’s time we get South. The temperature was 29 degrees F when we left. We had a smooth uneventful trip and arrived in Paducah, Kentucky at 6:00PM. The temperature is 62 but is suppose to get down to 45 tonight. We found a very nice motel for $49 for the night. And that includes breakfast. We had dinner at the Texas Roadhouse. We made reservations to launch Amber Lee ... read more

In hopes to extend the sailing season, Wayne and fellow sailor Rick will be trailering the Amber Lee II to Kentucky Lake and sailing/motoring south via the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Tenntom until we reach salt water in Mobile Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. We hope to launch about October 12 at the Green Turtle Marina Green Turtle . After we launch we plan to leave the boat in Kentucky and drive the truck and trailer the 500+ miles to Fairhope, Alabama on Mobile Bay. Rick's daughter, Christa, will be sailing/racing her boat in the Rhodes 19 Nationals Nationals at Fairhope on October 14-16. If we old grey hairs behave ourselves, Christa and her friend Peter, will drive us back to the Amber Lee II in Kentucky. We hope ... read more

Day 9 Tobago Cays, St Vincent March 13 (Continued) Wayne made it back to the boat and changed out of his camouflaged shorts before he was arrested as an insurgent gorilla. Karen will not need to mortgage the farm to bail her husband out of jail. We successfully checked back into Grenada so we are legally in that country once again. We had dinner of barracuda and curry chicken at a beach restaurant. We then walked up the beach to listen to the best steel drum band in the Caribbean. Five ladies and two fellows made the most amazing music. Several of the local boys joined in with their bongo drums. Brad, you would have loved this place! They kept up the beat until late in the night. We could hear the band from the boat. ... read more
