Well apparently you did not wish me enough luck for my train trip today. Got up early this morning, well just before 8. No one else in the dorm was up though, everyone in my room preferred to go to bed late and get up late. I packed, quietly, and headed out to the city centre. I got a nice wee breakfast while I waited for the Canterbury Cathedral Shop to open. Once it did I bought a tapestry pillow cushion cover, adding it to my massive array of bags that I am carrying. I made it to the train station with time to spare and I was fortunate that there were enough seats that I could take up two spaces, one for me and one for my bags! My rush through London was not too ... read more

As today was my only day in Canterbury I had to fit as much as possible in today. My first stop was at Canterbury Tales. Occupying the former parish church of St. Margaret is a re-creation of medieval life. You get an audio guide and follow along on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Thomas Becket. As you go through the different scenes from the town, to the woods to the Cathedral you hear different tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. My favorite tale was The Pardoner’s Tale, about three young men who are looking for Death. They are in an ale-house and ask an old man where Death is. The old man sends them towards a tree in the distance. Once there they find a large pile of gold. The decide to stand guard over the gold ... read more

This morning I got up early and went for a walk along the wall of York, before getting on the train to Canterbury. Most of the rest of the day was spent traveling and a little bit spent getting lost. There are no direct trains from York to Canterbury (or if there are I couldn’t find it). This meant that I had to change in London. I was actually quite fortunate because the two train stations (Kings Cross and St Pancras) were across the street from each other. St Pancras is a large multi level international train station. I didn’t get lost, so much as it took me a while to figure out exactly where to catch my train from. I did however get on the right train and made my way to Canterbury West. I ... read more

I am finally getting used to this place and tomorrow morning I am off to a new city. I have to go through London and change trains and by tomorrow night I will be in Canterbury. This morning I went to the Castle Museum, it was an interesting museum. There was a mish-mash of items and rooms ranging from a victorian street to an exhibit of the 60’s and even a dungeon. It was very informative though which was nice and I took quite a lot of pictures, of various signs as well as the exhibitions. Unfortunately I ran out of space on my SD card so I had to start going through and deleting old pictures, which takes a while. In the afternoon I went to the Railway Museum which was also really quite interesting. ... read more

I did not get up as early as I was originally planning to but I did manage to wake up in time to have breakfast at the hostel. My first stop of the day was York Minster. It is a working Church, that apparently costs 20,000 per day to run. While I was there the choir (which was quite full) was practicing ‘Most Highly Favored Lady’ which is a really pretty song. I walked through the church and then went down into the Crypt/Museum. The site of the Minster has four layers of history associated with it, Roman, Saxon, Norman and Medieval. Downstairs is where the street level would have been in the Roman time and the level kept rising and different people kept building on and expanding the Church until it is how you see ... read more

Woke up early this morning to snow! There was not much and by the time I went outside to go to the train station it was mostly slush on the ground. I spent the morning on the train and arrived in York around 12:45 in the afternoon. Check-in time was not until 2 p.m. so I went for a bit of a walk to familiarize myself with the town. My bag got quite heavy so I went back to the hostel and I was able to check in a bit early. The Ace Hostel (where I am staying) is a Georgian townhouse from 1752. Instead of packing my large suitcase I managed to condense everything I needed for 10 days into a large red carpet bag, a medium shoulder bag that I got in Paris and ... read more

I just wrote a beautiful blog and when I went to save it the computer said it couldn't open the page and I lost it all. I hate when that happens because my second attempt is never as good as the first. I will however try to write another wonderful blog post. I have been planning one last train trip through England before coming home for Christmas. I am going to York, Canterbury, Cardiff and Holmfirth. On Saturday I booked my hostels and I attempted to book train tickets. I looked at a few different websites and some of them wouldn't let me book a ticket for the specific train I wanted and would only sell me an advance ticket that would let me on any train that day, but for a much more expensive price. ... read more

Today I took a trip to Glasgow. I wanted to see the Science Museum but as luck would have it, it is closed on Mondays. (Before you ask, or while you are wondering, yes I did know that it was going to be closed before I went). I went to Glasgow to meet Ewan and we had already arranged to meet today so instead of going to the museum, I went shopping. Glasgow has a lot of shopping and I went into many store (and tried hard to refrain from buying things). There was a Christmas market and stall selling everything from wooden carvings and knitted clothing to nuts and cakes to brautwurst and kangaroo and ostrich burgers. I had a great time!! I ended up buying some chili covered cashews and some honey covered pistachios, ... read more

I had a very nice birthday over here in Edinburgh. The family I am staying with celebrates Thanksgiving and so for my birthday lunch we had some students over from the church and we had a large thanksgiving meal with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, mashed potatos, sweet potatos, green beans in cream of mushroom sauce, corn and corn bread. It was very nice so we went for a walk after lunch and then came back for cake and icecream!! The kids both made me a card which was sweet and it was altogether a very nice day!... read more

A week ago on the 16th of November I fell on the stairs and smacked my tailbone pretty badly. Around that time I also got sick, sore throat, cough, stuffed up nose. I went to a walk in clinic nearby and saw the doctor. My sickness was not the flu or an infection or viral or anything to be overly concerned with and even though my butt really hurt and it was painful to walk and sit there was nothing really that they could do. So for the last week I have not been doing much exept for trying to recover. My cold is nearly gone and while my tailbone is still tender I can now sit down (at least is some positions). Staying home did give me some time to watch a bit of British ... read more
