Europe September 14th 2011

I have been a bit remiss in posting photos lately. (I have also been remiss in taking them...stupid rain). Edinburgh is beautiful and despite the not so beautiful weather I have been out walking the streets. I did go to the National Gallery of Scotland. There were some beautiful paintings in there, there were also some odd ones but they were interesting. Unfortunately I was not allowed to take any photos. I have added here some pictures of Old Sachsenhausen (from my last day in Frankfurt).... read more

Today started out windy but still fairly warm. I decided to walk to Princess Street (about a 30minute walk). Princess Street has shopping along one side while the other is dedicated to gardens with the castle in the distance. Once I got to Princess Street it has started to rain. More like mist really, it was just enough to be annoying and when the wind picked up it got quite damp. I did a lot of ducking into shops not only to see what they had but also as a refuge from the weather! I ended up at Waterstone’s, a large book store and spent a nice while there. They have a Starbucks on the top floor which overlooks the castle. Not many pictures today what with the weather the way it was but hopefully tomorrow ... read more

Right so, I have safely made it to Edinburgh. My final night in Frankfurt I had the room to myself, which was nice…until there was a rather large spider on the roof just above my pillow!! It took me almost 20 minutes to work up the courage to kill it. And since I know that you are sitting there thinking that I am a big wuss, but it was a bit of an awkward angle and I didn’t want to miss and have it fall into my bed somewhere and then not be able to find it! The other thing about not having roommates is that there is no noise to wake you up in the morning. As a result I did not get up as early as usual. I did make it to breakfast before ... read more

This was my last real day in Frankfurt. My first stop was the Museum für Kommunikation. It was fascinating. Upstairs was a DIY (Do It Yourself) section which was mostly handicrafts and a few signs. They did have a ‘work station’ where you could make buttons or tinker with circuits and such. Downstairs though was where the permanent display was set up. There are 7 sections; the first one was about how communication started pictures and signals before the written word. Each section then progresses to the invention of mail and the postal system and then radio, television, phones and finally computers and the Internet. The signs on the walls were all in German but at the beginning of each “section” there was a book with the English translation of all the signs in that section. ... read more

I woke up to a chilly, windy and gray day. I spent the morning travelling on the train. I am pretty sure that I can now make my way to the Hauptbahnhof without getting too lost. I also went back to get my movie. After doing some research it appears that Bluray’s are separated into 3 regions (A,B & C) however most Bluray discs can be played in any region. Not the one I wanted however. I ended up getting the DVD because at least I know how to change the region code on a computer, (also it was cheaper). For a change from supermarket fare I decided to go to McDonald’s for lunch. It was very expensive!! €6 for a Big Mac combo!! I went to the Architecture museum in the afternoon. It was interesting, ... read more

Woke up to a grey and rainy day, however by 9 o’clock it was done and the sun was starting to shine. Since the museums don’t open until 10 (with a select few at 9) I decided to go to the Kinder (Children’s) Museum since it was a bit farther away and by the time I walked there it should be open. On the map I just follow the main road as it curves and it should be on my left just before the Hauptwache underground station. It wasn’t there. I criss-crossed all over the area that has the Museum symbol according to my map…nada. I did however find a very interesting mall. It was the building that first drew me in that direction. See the pictures!! The glass seems like it is being pulled into ... read more

It still holds true even if you do wake up in the middle of the night and lay in your bed for 2 hours listening to people roll over in their sleep! Despite waking up a few times during the night I had a good sleep and got up at 7 for breakfast. The fruit salad was not very good, it tasted like it had been sitting too long. Other than that breakfast was very good. I even had half of a flax bun left over to add to my lunch. I went to the U-Bahn station (the underground) and after fighting with the machine for 10 minutes (turning the language to English helped) I got my ticket. The U-bahn station was a bit of a maze and two flights underground. I did manage to find ... read more

Arrived safely in Frankfurt!! The plane was HOT!! That was the first thing you noticed when you got on. It got a bit better during the flight, luckily. I was fortunate that the seat beside me was not occupied so I had a place to store the blanket and pillow. The lady who had the seat one over from mine also took that seat over. I don't know what she did but she was pulled over by security guards and was the last one on the plane. Dinner was good and I did manage to get a few hours of sleep. Between that and a few movies the flight wasn't too bad. The touchdown was the smothest I have ever had!! The taxi down the runway to where they let us off however was really bumpy...planes ... read more

I am getting ready to leave and there is still so much that I have left to do. I have started to pack but I am way too much stuff thrown at/on my suitcase and I need to get rid of some of the extra weight and pack everything else nicely so that it all fits. I am also hoping to finish another mitten so that I have a pair to take with me to Europe. I am almost done my recipe book that I want to take with me. I have copied my favourite recipes into a single book so that I can do a bit of baking while I am away. ... read more
